# Studying Architecture Abroad: Degrees, Accreditation and the Route to Licensure

- [Home](https://www.studyu.org/en/)

- [Blog](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog)

Architecture is a regulated profession. A university gives you the education; the right to call yourself an architect comes later from a national regulator, after practical experience and an exam. So start by deciding where you want to practise, not by reading rankings. In 2026–2028 a year of study costs anything from $4,410 (€3,883) at Politecnico di Milano to $54,210 (£40,800) on UCL's bachelor's, and a TU Delft master's costs non-EU students $29,110 (€25,633) a year. The UK is also mid-way through a reform of its registration rules that runs to December 2028 and affects anyone starting in 2027.

| At a glance | What to know |
| --- | --- |
| Length of study | EU minimum: 5 years full-time, or 4 years plus 2 years of traineeship; US professional B.Arch: 5 years |
| Right to the title | Registration with a regulator: ARB in the UK, state boards in the US, national bodies in EU countries |
| Selection | Portfolio, interview and school grades; UK bachelor's entry with an 11-year school certificate usually needs a foundation year |
| Cost per year | Politecnico di Milano up to $4,410 (€3,883) in 2026/27; TU Delft master's $29,110 (€25,633); UCL bachelor's $54,210 (£40,800) for 2027 entry |
| UK reform | ARB completes its move to a new framework by December 2028; the Part 1 bachelor's stops being a mandatory step |

## A degree is not a licence {#section-1}

In many countries "architect" is a protected title. In the UK only people on the ARB register may use it. The US has no national licence: 55 state and territorial boards issue their own. In the EU, architecture is one of the professions whose minimum training is set by Directive 2005/36/EC.

The practical rule follows: before comparing schools, find the regulator in the country where you intend to work and check which programmes it accepts. A title such as Architectural Studies or Architectural Design does not by itself lead to registration.

If you are not sure you want to design buildings, compare the neighbouring fields first in our guides to [studying design abroad](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-studying-design-abroad) and [studying engineering abroad](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-studying-engineering-abroad).

## How the main systems compare {#section-2}

| Country | Education stage | What comes next | What applicants should check |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| United Kingdom | ARB-accredited bachelor's (Part 1) and master's (Part 2); under the new framework, a master's-level qualification | Practice qualification (Part 3 or a new practice-level award), then ARB registration | The programme's ARB status at graduation, plus RIBA validation |
| United States | NAAB-accredited B.Arch (5 years) or M.Arch | AXP experience, the ARE exam, a state licence | Whether the programme is in the NAAB directory; a 4-year B.S. in Architecture is not professional |
| EU countries | The Article 46 minimum of Directive 2005/36/EC (see below) | Registration with the national chamber | Whether the degree is on the national list and what rules apply to non-EU nationals |
| Turkey | Architecture bachelor's, usually 4 years | Turkish professional rules for local practice | Teaching language and recognition where you plan to work; see [architecture in Turkey](https://www.studyu.org/en/program-architecture) |

## The UK: what ARB's reform changes {#section-3}

The familiar Part 1 – Part 2 – Part 3 sequence is being replaced, and 2027 applicants need to know which rules will apply to them.

- Transition to December 2028. ARB began moving accreditation to a competency-based framework in 2023 and will finish by December 2028, after which it will no longer accredit qualifications under the old framework.
- The bachelor's is no longer essential. ARB states that people holding ARB-accredited Part 2 and Part 3 qualifications (or Part 2 via the Prescribed Examination) no longer need Part 1 to apply for registration. UCL puts it in applicant terms: from 2028 an architecture bachelor's will not be an essential requirement, and candidates will be able to qualify through an ARB-accredited master's.
- No fixed two years of experience. Under the new framework ARB removes the requirement for at least two years of practical experience before registration; practice is assessed through the practice-level qualification instead.
- Overseas degrees. Graduates from outside the EU sit ARB's Prescribed Examination at $2,590 (£1,950) per level. The Part 1 Prescribed Examination has its final sittings in 2026.

RIBA, the Royal Institute of British Architects, validates programmes separately. Validation is a quality mark, not registration, so check both. UCL's BSc Architecture, for example, is RIBA-validated and gives exemption from RIBA Part 1.

## The US: B.Arch, M.Arch and state licences {#section-4}

NAAB recognises three professional degrees. The B.Arch is a five-year professional bachelor's and must not be confused with the four-year B.S. in Architecture, a pre-professional degree that leads on to an M.Arch. The M.Arch follows either a related or an unrelated bachelor's, with length depending on prior study. The D.Arch is currently offered only by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

After graduating, candidates log experience through AXP and pass the ARE, and a state board issues the licence. If you were educated outside the US, NCARB's EESA evaluation compares your degree with the NCARB Education Standard and identifies any gaps.

## The EU: five years and recognition {#section-5}

Article 46 of Directive 2005/36/EC sets the minimum: at least five years of full-time university study, or four years plus two years of professional traineeship. Architecture must be the principal component, balancing design with history and theory, structures, urban planning and professional practice. Qualifications that benefit from automatic recognition are listed in Annex V, point 5.7.1.

Automatic recognition is aimed mainly at EU citizens. A graduate of a European school who holds a non-EU passport normally goes through the national procedure of the country where they want to work and registers with the local chamber, which usually means working in the local language.

## If you plan to practise in Russia or return home {#section-6}

Russian rules require design leads to be listed on a national register of specialists. Article 55.5-1 of the Town Planning Code asks for a higher-education degree in a construction-related field from an approved list, at least three years in engineering roles and at least ten years of total industry experience (five with an independent qualification assessment). A foreign degree must first be recognised in Russia: automatically if the university is on the government's list, otherwise through a Rosobrnadzor procedure.

## How admission works {#section-7}

- School grades. UCL asks for AAB at A-level. Applicants with an 11-year school certificate usually need a foundation year for UK bachelor's entry; Manchester states this for Russian applicants. See our guide to the [UK foundation year](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-foundation-year-in-the-uk).
- Portfolio. UCL requests a digital portfolio only after an initial check, so do not send one in advance. Life drawing, models, spatial studies and visible thinking count most.
- Interview. At UCL it takes place online after the portfolio review.
- Language. IELTS or similar for English-taught degrees; the national language for local programmes in Germany, Italy or the Netherlands.
- Deadlines. For UK bachelor's courses starting in 2027, the UCAS equal-consideration deadline is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time.

For a master's, a portfolio of university projects is almost always required, and professional programmes check which of your previous modules they can credit.

## What it costs {#section-8}

| Programme | Year | Fee | Also budget for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| UCL, BSc Architecture, 3 years | 2027/28 entry | $54,210 (£40,800) a year for international students | materials and printing up to $1,000 (£750) in year one and up to $1,660 (£1,250) later |
| TU Delft, master's (non-EU) | 2026/27 | $29,110 (€25,633) a year; $30,070 (€26,479) in 2027/28 | $16,120 (€14,200) of living costs paid to the university before arrival under immigration rules and refunded after the start |
| Politecnico di Milano | 2026/27 | up to $4,410 (€3,883) a year at the top band | regional tax $150–220 (€130–190), stamp duty, insurance |
| ARB exam for an overseas degree | current fee | $2,590 (£1,950) per level | preparing the portfolio and comparative matrix |

Studio work adds costs: models, printing, software and field trips. UCL estimates its optional annual trip at $800 (£600), with $330 (£250) subsidised by the school. ## Choosing your route {#section-9}

| Your situation | Logical route | What to check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Finished school, aiming for the UK | Foundation year, then ARB-accredited bachelor's and master's | Programme status with ARB at graduation |
| Finished school, tight budget | Public universities in Italy or Turkey; a master's elsewhere later | Teaching language and recognition where you will work |
| Hold an architecture bachelor's | Two-year European master's or a US M.Arch | Whether your degree counts as related |
| Hold a degree in another field | M.Arch for non-architecture graduates in the US or UK | Programme length and portfolio requirements |
| Already licensed, want to practise abroad | ARB exam, NCARB EESA or an EU national procedure | The regulator's experience and language rules |

## Timeline for 2027 entry {#section-10}

| When | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| Now | Pick the country where you want to practise and list its regulator's requirements |
| By December 2026 | Build a portfolio: drawing, models, photographs of spaces, two or three finished projects |
| By 13 January 2027 | Submit UCAS applications for UK bachelor's courses; take your language test |
| January to April 2027 | Interviews, portfolio requests and European master's applications |
| Summer 2027 | Deposit, confirmation of enrolment, visa, housing |

## Common mistakes {#section-11}

- Picking a programme by ranking without checking its status with the regulator that matters to you.
- Confusing a US four-year B.S. in Architecture with a professional B.Arch.
- Relying on the old UK Part 1–3 model and ignoring ARB's transition to 2028.
- Moving to an EU country with no plan to learn its language, although chamber registration usually requires it.
- Forgetting about recognition at home if you intend to return and lead projects there.

## FAQ {#faq}

### How long does it take to become an architect abroad?

Education usually takes five years: that is the EU minimum and the length of a US B.Arch. In the UK it is three years of bachelor's plus two of master's, followed by a practice qualification. Only after that does the national regulator grant the title.

### Can I apply without an art-school background?

Yes. Your portfolio can include life drawing, models, photographs and self-initiated projects. The admissions panel decides, and it cares more about how you think about space than about art-school certificates.

### What changes in the UK after 2028?

ARB completes its move to a competency-based framework. Part 1 will no longer be mandatory, and the two-year minimum of practice will be replaced by assessment through a practice-level qualification. Ask your university which framework your cohort will graduate under.

### Can I practise in the US with a European degree?

Only through a state licence. NCARB evaluates foreign education through EESA, and the state board decides on exam eligibility and licensure.

### Is architecture in Europe always expensive?

No. At Politecnico di Milano the 2026/27 fee is capped at $4,410 (€3,883) a year. Dutch technical universities charge non-EU students more: a TU Delft master's is $29,110 (€25,633) a year.
