After admission, students apply for a Latvian residence permit at the consulate or in Riga with proof of funds, insurance and housing; the migration authority makes the decision. When issued, the permit covers the academic year, can be renewed subject to academic progress and allows up to 20 hours of work weekly. A valid Latvian residence permit generally permits short travel within the Schengen area, subject to the applicable rules.
