## How Turkish higher education works

Turkey runs on the Bologna system: four-year bachelor's degrees (six for medicine), one-to-two-year master's, English- and Turkish-taught tracks. Universities split into public (state) and private (foundation) - and for international students the private segment is the practical entry point: admission by school certificate, no national exam, decisions within weeks, and scholarships that cut the list price by 25-100%. Istanbul concentrates the largest cluster of English-taught programs in the region, from engineering and medicine to design and business.

## Admission step by step

The private-university route is straightforward: choose 3-5 programs → submit your school certificate with translation, passport and motivation → receive offers with scholarship terms → pay the deposit and sign the contract → we process denklik (recognition of your certificate by the Turkish education authorities) in parallel → arrive, take the university's English proficiency test or submit TOEFL, and start - either directly or after the English preparatory year. Public universities are a separate track: they may require YÖS or SAT and run competitive admission; for most of our students, private universities with a locked-in discount win on both price and program.

## After 11th grade: no gap year needed

A school certificate from Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan or other CIS countries qualifies directly - eleven school years are enough, no foundation year required. If your English is not there yet, the university's preparatory year (hazırlık) closes the gap and counts as full student status: visa, dormitory, campus life from day one.

## Tuition and scholarships

Private-university list prices run roughly $4,000-12,000 per year. When a university awards a scholarship, the written offer confirms the final tuition and conditions; individual reductions can be 30-50%, while flagships like Koç and Sabancı sit above that band. Dormitories cost $150-400 monthly, living in Istanbul from $400-500. A full academic year in Turkey often totals less than tuition alone in the UK, US or UAE - with a Bologna degree recognised across Europe.

## Student visa and residence permit

Most CIS citizens enter visa-free for up to 30-90 days and file for the student residence permit (ikamet) after enrolment - the university and our team guide the application, appointment and card collection. The permit renews annually while you study, allows part-time campus work, and serves as your legal ID in Turkey: bank account, SIM, transport card all follow from it.

## Why students choose Turkey with us

We are based in Istanbul and work with 300+ partner universities. During the free initial consultation, we clarify your goal, profile, timing and budget and identify the next realistic step. Under an agreement with StudyU, we verify current prices and prepare applications, airport pickup, housing requests, denklik and ikamet paperwork; universities decide admission and confirm scholarship terms, while providers confirm housing availability.

## What usually goes wrong

Waiting for national exam results before applying - many Turkish private universities review the school certificate, while scholarship terms depend on the university or funding body's criteria and decision. Leaving denklik and the apostille for August, when queues peak. And comparing universities by list price instead of the contract price after the negotiated discount - the "expensive" university regularly ends up cheaper. All three are solved by starting in February-March for a September intake.
