# University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra): Admission, Fees and Entrance Exams for International Students

The University of Coimbra (UC) is Portugal's oldest university and a public institution. Non-EU applicants enter through the special competition for international students, which for 2026/27 ran in four rounds between 15 December 2025 and 14 August 2026. A bachelor's or integrated master's year costs international students $7,950 (€7,000); Medicine costs $20,440 (€18,000). Teaching is in Portuguese at B2, and you may apply with B1 if you commit to a year-long language course. What sets Coimbra apart from Lisbon and Porto is how it ranks applicants: by recognised entrance-exam results (for Russian school leavers, mainly the Unified State Exam, EGE, in the relevant subjects), or, if you have none, by UC's own qualification exams taken in Portuguese.

UC dates back to 1290, settled permanently in Coimbra in 1537, and its historic Alta and Sofia buildings have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013. The university reports 31,256 students, including 5,744 foreign nationals, and students of 111 nationalities.

## Which faculties and programmes accept international students {#section-1}

First-cycle admission at UC is centralised. The university sets the rules, the calendar and the InforEstudante application platform, while each programme's call (aviso de abertura) lists the number of places and the fee. Places left over from one round roll into the next.

For 2026/27, international applicants could apply to:

- Faculty of Medicine: Medicine and Dental Medicine;
- Faculty of Law: Law and Public Administration;
- Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCTUC): engineering from civil and mechanical to aerospace and informatics, architecture, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, geology, anthropology, artificial intelligence and data science, design and multimedia;
- Faculty of Arts and Humanities: history, philosophy, languages, journalism, geography, archaeology, tourism;
- Faculty of Pharmacy: pharmaceutical and bioanalytical sciences;
- Faculty of Economics: economics, management, international relations, sociology;
- Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences: psychology, education, social work;
- Faculty of Sport Sciences and Physical Education: sport sciences;
- Nursing School: nursing.

First-round places for international students in 2026/27, taken from the programme calls:

| Programme | Round 1 places | Annual fee |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Law | 67 | $7,950 (€7,000) |
| Civil Engineering | 28 | $7,950 (€7,000) |
| Psychology | 24 | $7,950 (€7,000) |
| Economics | 18 | $7,950 (€7,000) |
| Management | 16 | $7,950 (€7,000) |
| Mechanical Engineering | 16 | $7,950 (€7,000) |
| Modern Languages | 16 | $7,950 (€7,000) |
| Biology | 15 | $7,950 (€7,000) |
| Medicine (6-year integrated master's) | 15 | $20,440 (€18,000) |
| Informatics Engineering | 10 | $7,950 (€7,000) |
| Artificial Intelligence and Data Science | 10 | $7,950 (€7,000) |
| Architecture (integrated master's) | 10 | $7,950 (€7,000) |
| Dental Medicine (integrated master's) | 7 | $7,950 (€7,000) |

UC reserves up to 30% of general places for graduates of partner schools in Brazil and for past participants in its international programmes (Winter University, UC Diáspora, INSpire). Unused reserved places return to the general pool, but in practice applicants from elsewhere compete for slightly fewer places than the headline number.

## Who can apply as an international student {#section-2}

The status applies to applicants who hold neither Portuguese nor EU/EEA nationality. Since a 2025 decree, citizens of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway no longer qualify either.

You cannot apply if, on 1 January of the year of entry, you:

- are a family member of a Portuguese, EU or EEA citizen as defined by Portuguese Law 37/2006;
- have been legally resident in Portugal for over two years without a break, or your parents have; years on a student residence permit count only if you were at a Portuguese secondary school;
- benefit from a treaty that grants you equal rights with Portuguese citizens;
- are at UC on a mobility programme.

Dual nationals holding a non-Portuguese EU passport and a non-EU one may apply with the non-EU nationality, but then keep international status until graduation.

Academically, you need a school-leaving qualification that gives access to higher education in the country that issued it. The harder question is what UC will rank you on.

## Which entrance exams UC accepts from school leavers abroad {#section-3}

UC does not rank applicants by their school-leaving average. Your final score is the sum of your entrance-exam results for the programme's subjects, multiplied by their weights, on a 0–200 scale. UC accepts:

- Portuguese national entrance exams (provas de ingresso);
- ENEM (Brazil), IB, A-levels, Gaokao, the Macau Unified Exam, SAT, AP and CLEP, plus exams from Chile, Colombia and Cape Verde;
- foreign school-leaving exams on the annual list approved by the Portuguese higher-education access commission (for 2026/27, Deliberação n.º 619/2026);
- other exams at the discretion of UC's academic services, case by case.

Russia is listed in Annex II of that decision, the list of countries whose national school-leaving exams can replace Portuguese entrance exams. In practice, the EGE in mathematics is named explicitly in the correspondence table, while the EGE in biology, physics and chemistry qualifies under the general rule for nationally administered final exams; other same-name subjects may be accepted at UC's discretion. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are not in the annex, so holders of Kazakhstan's UNT, or anyone missing an EGE in a required subject, will most likely need UC's own exams. UC's academic services decide how EGE scores convert to the 0–200 scale and whether they meet a programme's minimum.

### UC qualification exams (Provas de Qualificação Académica)

These exams are for applicants without recognised results. They are sat in person, in Portuguese, in Coimbra or at Portuguese embassies and consulates where available. UC lists a fee of $57 (€50). The pass mark is 10 out of 20 in each required subject, or 14 out of 20 for Medicine and Dental Medicine. Subjects follow UC's table: Biology, Mathematics and Chemistry for Medicine and Dental Medicine; Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry for Civil and Mechanical Engineering.

For the 2026/27 cycle there were two sessions:

| Session | Registration | Exams | Results |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| First | 23 October – 11 November 2025 | 19 November – 12 December 2025 | 16 December 2025 |
| Second | 2 February – 8 May 2026 | 2–30 June 2026 | 7 July 2026 |

Registration runs through InforEstudante. UC does not ask for a language certificate to sit the exams, but the papers are in Portuguese. If the next cycle follows the same pattern, registration for the first session will close in November 2026, before programme applications open.

### Foundation Year (Ano Zero)

UC also runs a one-year Foundation Year in two tracks, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences and Humanities. Students strengthen their Portuguese and core subjects, sit UC's qualification exams during the year, and can count their Ano Zero average at a 50% weight. The minimum entry score after Ano Zero is 100/200, or 140 for Medicine and Dental Medicine. The year costs $5,680 (€5,000).

## Portuguese requirements: B2, B1 with a course, or the language Foundation Year {#section-4}

| Your level | How to apply | After admission |
| --- | --- | --- |
| B2 (DIPLE or a B2 certificate from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities) | standard application | no language course |
| B1 (DEPLE, a B1 certificate or test from the same faculty, or self-declaration) | apply with a commitment to a one-year course | the course is charged separately, runs alongside Year 1 and is repeated until you reach B2 |
| Below B1 | apply to the degree and tick the Portuguese-language Foundation Year | one year of Portuguese from A1 to B1 (60 ECTS) at $7,950 (€7,000); the degree starts once you reach B1 |

The language Foundation Year has a catch. Once admitted, you pay the registration fee and the first tuition instalment of the degree. If you do not reach B1 within the year, your place is deferred for another year of language study. The money stays as credit on your UC account for up to three years and can be used for other UC payments, but it is not refunded. If you still have not reached B1 after the deferred year, the place lapses and you must apply again.

UC's subject table sets B2 as the minimum Portuguese level for Medicine and Dental Medicine, and B1 (with the compulsory course) for most other programmes.

## Application calendar: four rounds in 2026/27 {#section-5}

| Round | Applications | Results | Enrolment |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1st | 15 December 2025 – 26 January 2026 | 4 February 2026 | 5–12 February 2026 |
| 2nd | 16 February – 15 April 2026 | 23 April 2026 | 24 April – 1 May 2026 |
| 3rd | 20 May – 17 July 2026 | 27 July 2026 | 28 July – 4 August 2026 |
| Extraordinary | 7–14 August 2026 | 24 August 2026 | 25 August – 1 September 2026 |

You may apply conditionally if a document is missing at the deadline; UC sets a date to submit it, and an application that misses it can move to the next round at no extra cost. Results came out 7–10 days after each round closed, so the first round leaves the most time for a visa. Medicine had no places left for the 2026 extraordinary round.

## Tuition and fees, 2026/27 {#section-6}

| Payment | Amount | When |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Application fee | $57 (€50) | on submission; non-refundable, including if you are not admitted |
| Registration fee (includes school insurance) | $23 (€20) | every year at registration |
| Bachelor's and integrated master's tuition | $7,950 (€7,000) a year | 25% at enrolment, the rest in 11 monthly instalments from October to August |
| Medicine | $20,440 (€18,000) a year | same schedule |
| UC qualification exam | $57 (€50) | at exam registration |
| Language / subject Foundation Year | $7,950 (€7,000) / $5,680 (€5,000) a year | if you take that route |
| Health or physical-aptitude prerequisite check | $45–51 (€40–45) | only for programmes that require it |

The first instalment, $1,990 (€1,750) for most programmes or $5,110 (€4,500) for Medicine, confirms enrolment and is non-refundable even if you later withdraw. UC issues the acceptance letter (carta de aceitação) for your visa only after this payment and the registration fee. A three-year bachelor's without discounts totals $23,850 (€21,000); six years of Medicine total $122,630 (€108,000), assuming fees stay the same.

UC's summary fee table gives a lower bound of $3,410 (€3,000) a year, but every 2026/27 programme call we checked (Law, Economics, Management, Psychology, engineering, Informatics, Biology, Modern Languages, Architecture, Dental Medicine) states $7,950 (€7,000), as does the university's academic regulation. Budget on that figure. For legal ways to pay from Russia, see [how to pay for studies abroad from Russia](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-how-to-pay-for-studies-abroad-from-russia).

## UC scholarships: the one real way to lower the fee {#section-7}

Unlike Lisbon and Porto, Coimbra gives international students automatic fee discounts. They are set by Regulation 346/2025 and deducted from annual tuition.

| Discount | Who qualifies | Amount |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Entry-score award (bachelor's and integrated master's) | students admitted through the special competition with 150/200 or more, no rounding; 140–149 only for high-performance athletes, graduates of UC partner schools and participants in UC programmes in the previous three years | $2,270 (€2,000) from 170, $1,700 (€1,500) from 160, $1,140 (€1,000) from 150 (and from 140 for the listed groups) |
| Priority programmes | students admitted with 130/200 or more to programmes on UC's list | $2,270 (€2,000) a year |
| Master's award | all full-time international master's students | $2,270 (€2,000) a year |
| Continuation award | UC graduates continuing to a UC master's | $1,140 (€1,000) a year, stackable with the master's award |

UC fixes the priority list before Round 1 opens and publishes it on its scholarship page; check whether your programme is on it before you apply. The entry-score and priority awards cannot be combined.

To keep a discount you must study full-time for the whole year, retain international status and finish within the standard duration. Switching to part-time, changing status or withdrawing cancels the award and triggers repayment, and any extra years are charged at the full fee. None of these awards applies to Medicine.

Two examples. With 135/200 on a priority-list programme you pay $5,680 (€5,000) a year instead of $7,950 (€7,000). With 165/200 on a programme outside the list, the award is $1,700 (€1,500) and the year costs $6,250 (€5,500).

## Master's degrees at Coimbra {#section-8}

Master's applicants apply through each programme's own call. For the programmes we checked for 2026/27 (Informatics Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geosciences, Industrial Engineering and Management, Design and Multimedia), international students pay $7,950 (€7,000) a year against $1,210 (€1,063.47) for EU students. With the $2,270 (€2,000) award, the effective fee is $5,680 (€5,000).

Many master's programmes are taught in more than one language: Informatics Engineering and Economics, for instance, list both Portuguese and English. Check the teaching language in UC's course catalogue and degree requirements in the call. For the national picture, see [master's degrees in Portugal](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-masters-in-portugal).

## Medicine and Dental Medicine at UC {#section-9}

| Requirement, 2026/27 | Medicine | Dental Medicine |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Round 1 places for international students | 15 | 7 |
| Annual fee | $20,440 (€18,000) | $7,950 (€7,000) |
| Minimum score | 140/200 | 140/200 |
| Exam subjects | Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry | Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry |
| Portuguese | B2 | B2 |
| Entry-score award | not available | standard rules |

Both programmes require the Group A prerequisite: a medical declaration, on the official form, that no impairment prevents interpersonal communication and learning. You may self-declare when applying, but must confirm it within three months of starting; otherwise registration is cancelled and the first instalment is not refunded.

In 2026/27, Dental Medicine in Coimbra costs far less than in Lisbon ($17,030 (€15,000) a year) or Porto ($9,650 (€8,500)), with the same language bar. Medicine costs the same as in Lisbon. Recognition of a Portuguese medical degree in Russia and other CIS countries is decided individually under the rules of the country where you plan to practise. For other options, see our overview of [medical programmes](https://www.studyu.org/en/program-medicine).

## Accommodation: SASUC residences and private rentals {#section-10}

UC's social services (SASUC) run 13 residences. International students apply through the "other regimes" form; your preferred residence is not binding, and places run for the academic year from September to June.

| "Other regimes" rate from 1 October 2026 | Per month |
| --- | --- |
| Bed in a double room | $220–250 (€192–221) |
| Single room, shared bathroom | $360–370 (€313–328) |
| Single room, en-suite | $400 (€348) |

Prices include water, electricity, gas, internet, weekly bed-linen and towel changes and a shared kitchen. VAT and a $6 (€5) monthly liability-insurance charge may be added. Summer stays are charged separately at daily rates.

Residence places are far fewer than students, so look for a private room in parallel. Do not send a deposit for a listing until you have seen the contract and verified the landlord.

## Visa and residence permit {#section-11}

1. Acceptance letter. UC issues it after you pay 25% of annual tuition and the registration fee.
2. D4 study visa. Russian citizens apply at the BLS visa centre in Moscow; according to the Portuguese Embassy notice of 17 April 2026, students with a university letter are received without an appointment. The national visa fee is $120 (€110).
3. Means of subsistence. Consulates start from the Portuguese minimum wage, $1,040 (€920) a month in 2026. For a study visa the funds cover 12 months, i.e. $12,540 (€11,040), and may be halved if you already have accommodation; the consulate decides which evidence it accepts.
4. First months. A residence visa is valid for four months and allows two entries; during that time you apply to AIMA for a residence permit.
5. Residence permit. Higher-education students receive a three-year renewable permit, or one matching a shorter programme, and may work as employees or self-employed alongside their studies.

The consulate decides on the visa and AIMA on the residence permit; the university decides neither. For documents and timing, see the [Portugal student visa guide](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-portugal-student-visa).

## Coimbra, Lisbon or Porto {#section-12}

The table shows international fees for 2026/27; Lisbon has already confirmed the same amounts for 2027/28.

| Criterion | Coimbra (UC) | Lisbon (ULisboa) | Porto (U.Porto) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Bachelor's, per year | $7,950 (€7,000) for every programme | from $1,700 (€1,500) for Law to $12,490 (€11,000), by school | $3,970–6,810 (€3,500–6,000) for most programmes |
| Medicine, per year | $20,440 (€18,000) | $20,440 (€18,000) | $18,740 (€16,500) |
| Dental Medicine, per year | $7,950 (€7,000) | $17,030 (€15,000) | $9,650 (€8,500) |
| Bachelor's language | B2; B1 with a course | B1 or a course | independent-user level |
| How a CIS school leaver is ranked | recognised exams (including the EGE) or UC exams | each school weighs the school-leaving average and subject background | faculty rules |
| Discounts for international students | score- and programme-based, $1,140–2,270 (€1,000–2,000) | incentives for Portuguese-speaking countries | up to 45% for Portuguese-speaking countries only |

On price alone, Coimbra wins on Dental Medicine, on priority-list programmes and at master's level, where every international student gets the award. Porto is cheaper for humanities and science bachelor's degrees, Lisbon for Law. See the full profiles of the [University of Lisbon](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-lisbon) and the [University of Porto](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-porto), or compare other institutions in [universities in Portugal](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-universities-in-portugal).

## Who Coimbra suits {#section-13}

UC suits applicants ready to reach solid Portuguese within a year who want a classic university in a small city where life revolves around study. For budgeting, fees are predictable and discounts depend on your score, not on an essay competition. Strong EGE results in your programme's subjects may spare you UC's own exams.

It is a weaker fit if you need an English-taught bachelor's, want to start next September without language preparation, or are looking for the cheapest programme in the country. For the general route see [applying to Portuguese universities](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-applying-to-portuguese-universities) and [bachelor's degrees in Portugal](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-bachelors-in-portugal); for budgeting, [the cost of studying in Portugal](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-cost-of-studying-in-portugal); and for the country overview, [study in Portugal](https://www.studyu.org/en/country-portugal).

## Timeline for 2027/28 entry {#section-14}

| When | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| September – October 2026 | shortlist two or three programmes and note their exam subjects and weights in UC's table; decide whether your EGE results cover them or you need UC exams |
| October – December 2026 | register for the first session of UC exams (last cycle: by mid-November); take a Portuguese test or obtain a certificate |
| November – December 2026 | apostille your school certificate and transcript; translate documents not issued in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish |
| From mid-December 2026 | apply in round 1 on InforEstudante and pay the fee |
| After results | pay 25% of tuition and the registration fee, get the acceptance letter, book the visa centre |
| Spring – summer 2027 | D4 visa, SASUC application, private housing search, insurance for the first months |

## Common mistakes {#section-15}

- Expecting UC to rank your school average. Ranking is by exams; without them there is nothing to compare.
- Missing UC exam registration. The first session closes before programme applications open.
- Planning to sit UC exams in English. They are held in Portuguese only.
- Choosing the language Foundation Year without reading the terms. The first tuition instalment becomes account credit, not a refund.
- Forgetting the 25% first instalment. No payment, no acceptance letter, no visa.
- Going part-time while holding a discount. The award is cancelled and must be repaid.

## FAQ {#section-16}

### Can I apply to Coimbra with an 11-year school certificate?

Yes. A Russian or Kazakh school certificate gives you the right to apply, but you are ranked on exams. The EGE in mathematics, biology, physics and chemistry can replace the Portuguese entrance exams in those subjects; if you lack the right EGE or hold Kazakhstan's UNT, you sit UC's own exam in Portuguese.

### How much does a year cost for a non-EU student in 2026/27?

$7,950 (€7,000) for bachelor's, integrated master's and most master's programmes, and $20,440 (€18,000) for Medicine. With a score of 150/200 or a priority-list programme, UC deducts $1,140–2,270 (€1,000–2,000) a year.

### Does Coimbra offer bachelor's degrees in English?

Not through the 2026/27 special competition: every first-cycle programme requires Portuguese at B2 or a commitment to learn it. English appears at master's level, where several programmes list both languages.

### Where can I sit UC's exams and what do they cost?

In person in Coimbra, or at Portuguese embassies and consulates where they can host them. UC lists a $57 (€50) fee. You need at least 10/20 in each subject, or 14/20 for Medicine and Dental Medicine.

### Can I apply if my Portuguese is only A2?

Yes, through the language Foundation Year: apply to the degree and choose a year of Portuguese at $7,950 (€7,000) first. The degree starts once you reach B1, but you still need recognised or UC exam results for ranking.

### Will I get a residence place after admission?

Not automatically. You apply to SASUC separately, the residence is assigned after review, and a bed in a double room costs international students $220–250 (€192–221) a month in 2026/27. Plan a private-market fallback early.

### Can I work while studying?

Yes. The law ties the right to work, as an employee or self-employed alongside your studies, to the study residence permit. While you are on the D4 visa and waiting for AIMA, plan to live on your own funds.

### How does StudyU help with Coimbra?

Programme selection based on UC's exams and discounts, an exam and language plan, document and application preparation and help with the visa file are provided under an agreement with StudyU. The university decides on admission and discounts, the Portuguese consulate on the visa and AIMA on the residence permit.
