# University of Florida: Admission for International Students

The University of Florida (UF) is Florida's flagship public research university in Gainesville and one of the most selective public universities in the United States. International first-year applicants must submit SAT, ACT or CLT scores, a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member and an English test, and they apply only through the Common App with a $30 fee. UF's 2026–27 budget for an incoming out-of-state freshman is $54,010 before health insurance. Admitted international freshmen are reviewed for out-of-state tuition waivers worth up to $20,000 a year, although only a limited number receive one.

UF is easy to confuse with other public universities in the state: [Florida International University](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-florida-international-university) in Miami, the [University of Central Florida](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-university-of-central-florida) in Orlando, the University of South Florida in Tampa and Florida State University in Tallahassee. Each has its own application and costs. UF Online programs do not support F-1 study; this profile covers the Gainesville campus.

## Who UF suits {#section-1}

| Advantages for an international applicant | What to know in advance |
| --- | --- |
| Research, medicine, engineering and agricultural sciences on one large campus | Admission is competitive; the middle half of admitted students score 1420+ on the SAT |
| Lower total cost than private universities of a similar profile | Testing is required by state rules; there is no test-optional route |
| Admitted international freshmen are considered for waivers of up to $20,000 a year | Awards are limited, need no separate application and allow no additional materials |
| A clear three-round application calendar | Early Decision is binding, so you cannot leave it for a better offer |
| Gainesville is an affordable college town | Major employers sit in Miami, Orlando and Tampa, so internships often mean relocating |

UF is worth a close look if you have strong school grades, a high SAT or ACT and a budget of about $55,000–58,000 a year including insurance, and if you treat a waiver as a possible bonus. If you do not plan to sit a test, a university such as [ASU](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-arizona-state) that does not require the SAT is a better fit.

## Undergraduate entry requirements {#section-2}

### Coursework and grades

UF's minimum is 16 academic units: four years of English with substantial writing, four years of math at Algebra 1 level or above, three years of natural science (two with labs), three years of social science and two years of one foreign language. The formal grade minimum is a C average in academic core courses, which only qualifies you to apply; UF notes that most admitted students far exceed it.

UF recalculates its own core weighted GPA (4.0 base, with extra weight for advanced courses). The middle 50% of the class of 2030 had a recalculated GPA of 4.5–4.7 and SAT scores of 1420–1520 (ACT 32–35). These ranges are not minimums, and UF stresses that no single factor decides an application. Reviewers also weigh curriculum strength, academic progress, activities, the essay and personal background. The UF Office of Admissions makes the decision.

### Documents for applicants educated outside the US

UF asks for:

- Transcripts for at least the four most recent years of secondary school, including courses in progress. For a Russian student in grade 11, that means grades 8–10 plus the final-year schedule.
- Records in the original language with a word-for-word certified English translation. Unofficial copies uploaded to the Gator Portal are enough for review; official records and translations are required at enrollment.
- A course-by-course credential evaluation with a GPA calculation from any current NACES member, such as WES or ECE, received by the materials deadline of your round.

Students from schools that do not use the US grading system do not complete STARS, UF's self-reported transcript system.

### SAT, ACT or CLT

Under Florida Board of Governors regulation, every first-year applicant submits the SAT, ACT or CLT. You may self-report, but official scores must reach UF by May 1 or you cannot enroll. UF superscores across sittings, and the ACT science section no longer counts. Our guide to the [SAT or ACT](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-sat-or-act) helps you choose.

### English

The 2026–27 undergraduate catalog states that applicants whose native language is not English must submit official TOEFL or IELTS scores. It does not set a published undergraduate minimum, so aim for a strong result. For comparison, graduate admission requires TOEFL iBT 80 (from spring 2027, 4.5 on the new TOEFL scale with every section at 4.0 or higher) or IELTS 6.5. The Duolingo English Test does not appear in either list.

## Fall 2027 deadlines and steps {#section-3}

| Step | Early Decision (binding) | Early Action | Regular Decision |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Application | October 15, 2026 | November 1, 2026 | January 15, 2027 |
| Materials (transcripts, evaluation, tests) | October 22, 2026 | November 8, 2026 | January 22, 2027 |
| Decision | December 11, 2026 | January 22, 2027 | March 19, 2027 |
| Confirmation and $200 deposit | January 8, 2027 | May 1, 2027 | May 1, 2027 |
| Official test scores | May 1, 2027 | May 1, 2027 | May 1, 2027 |
| Final official transcript | July 1, 2027 | July 1, 2027 | July 1, 2027 |

Early Decision binds you to enroll if admitted and to withdraw other applications; it requires an agreement signed by the student, a parent and a school counselor through the Common App. When your budget depends on a waiver, Early Action is usually safer because it gives an early answer without commitment. Regular Decision outcomes can also include a waitlist or Pathways, a route that starts at Santa Fe College and transfers to UF in selected majors; UF does not say on that page whether it suits F-1 students.

Steps:

1. Common App: profile, UF questions and personal essay; pay the $30 fee by card.
2. Gator Portal: access arrives 24–48 hours after you submit; track status and upload documents there.
3. Transcripts and translations by your round's materials deadline.
4. NACES evaluation: order it weeks ahead so the report arrives on time.
5. SAT, ACT or CLT plus TOEFL or IELTS, sent officially.
6. After admission: the $200 deposit, financial documents for the I-20 and the housing application.

Because international credentials take longer to process, UF advises international applicants to apply ahead of the stated deadlines.

## Cost in 2026–27 {#section-4}

| Item, incoming out-of-state freshman (30 credits) | Amount |
| --- | --- |
| Tuition and fees | $34,620 |
| Books and course materials | $1,220 |
| Transportation | $1,700 |
| Living expenses | $14,190 |
| Personal expenses | $2,224 |
| Federal loan fees | $56 |
| UF budget total | $54,010 |
| Health insurance (average annual premium, International Center estimate) | about $3,185 |

Out-of-state students, international or American, pay a higher per-credit rate: $1,153.88 per undergraduate credit hour in 2026–27 against $214.54 for Florida residents. The non-resident fee rose by 15% from fall 2026, so older guides understate today's price. The graduate out-of-state budget is $34,780 in tuition and $58,470 in total. The International Center recommends having about $20,000 available on arrival, since fee deferment is not offered and transfers to a new US bank account take time. See also the [cost of studying in the USA](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-cost-of-studying-in-the-usa).

## Scholarships and waivers {#section-5}

F-1 students cannot receive federal aid. UF's Office of Admissions awards merit scholarships to about 10% of admitted freshmen, based on the admission file, with no separate application and no option to add materials.

| Award | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Alumni out-of-state tuition waiver | up to $8,000 a year (up to $32,000 over four years) |
| Sunshine waiver | up to $16,000 a year |
| Gator Nation waiver | $20,000 a year ($80,000 over four years) |
| Presidential / Gold / Platinum | $5,000 / $8,000 / $10,000 a year |
| Admissions Honors (University Research Scholars) | $2,000 total, $500 per fall and spring term |

Admitted international freshmen are considered for one of the out-of-state tuition waivers. A waiver cannot be combined with another award that reduces the same part of tuition, such as a School of Music waiver. Selected students hear by mid-March; no message means no award. The Lombardi and Stamps scholarships are open to students admitted to the Honors Program in Early Decision or Early Action. UF decides every award. More context in our guide to [financial aid for international students in the USA](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-financial-aid-for-international-students-usa).

## Housing {#section-6}

Residence halls are billed by semester, separately from tuition. Rates for 2026–27 per semester:

| Room type | Example | Per semester |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Traditional quad | Thomas Hall | $3,319 |
| Traditional triple | Broward Hall | $3,465 |
| Traditional double | Broward Hall, East Hall | $3,929 |
| Traditional single | Jennings, Yulee and others | $4,161 |
| Suite single | Infinity Hall | $5,858 |

A double room comes to $7,858 for the academic year before meals. The same double cost $3,556 per semester a year earlier, so plan for increases across four years. Read more in our guide to [student housing in the USA](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-student-housing-usa).

## F-1 student visa {#section-7}

For the I-20, UF's International Center asks for proof of funds for a year of study: at least $54,461 for undergraduates and $59,394 for graduate students in its 2026–27 calculation, plus $6,000 for a spouse and $4,000 per child. Bank documents must be on bank letterhead with a logo, stamp or seal, dated within the last six months and in English or with a certified translation.

Then come the SEVIS fee ($350), the visa fee ($185) and the interview. Russian nationals book interviews at the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw or Astana, as the embassy in Moscow does not offer routine nonimmigrant visa services. Kazakh citizens apply in Astana or Almaty. F-1 applicants must make their social media profiles public. The consulate decides on the visa.

On July 17, 2026 the Department of Homeland Security published a final rule replacing "duration of status" with a fixed admission period for F-1 students, due to apply from September 15, 2026. University international offices report that on September 14 a U.S. District Court issued a preliminary injunction, so the existing framework still applies for now. UF's International Center page still showed the expected September 15 date on October 2, 2026, so check the current status before travel, and see our [F-1 student visa guide](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-f1-student-visa-usa) and [working while studying and OPT](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-working-while-studying-and-opt-usa).

## Notes for applicants from Russia and Kazakhstan {#section-8}

- The NACES evaluation is mandatory. An apostille or a notarized translation does not replace an evaluation report with a GPA.
- Four years of records. Prepare grades from grade 8 onward, not only the attestat.
- Testing takes planning. Book an SAT, ACT or CLT seat early and leave time for a retake before the ED or EA deadline.
- Payments. Settle your payment route before admission; legal options are described in [how to pay for studies abroad from Russia](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-how-to-pay-for-studies-abroad-from-russia).
- Early Decision only if UF is clearly first and your budget works without a waiver.

## Mistakes to avoid {#section-9}

- Counting on test-optional admission. Without the SAT, ACT or CLT, the application is not reviewed.
- Ordering the NACES evaluation too late. An incomplete file misses its round.
- Choosing Early Decision as a gamble without the budget. You cannot walk away for a better offer.
- Budgeting with old prices. The non-resident fee went up from fall 2026.
- Missing the May 1 official score deadline. Self-reported scores alone do not allow enrollment.

## FAQ {#section-11}

### Where is the University of Florida located?

In Gainesville, in north-central Florida. It is not in Miami, Orlando or Tampa; those cities host FIU, UCF and USF, which are separate universities with different requirements.

### Can I apply to UF without the SAT?

No. State rules require every first-year applicant to submit the SAT, ACT or CLT, and official scores must arrive by May 1. The UF Office of Admissions makes the admission decision.

### How much does UF cost for international students?

For a new non-resident undergraduate, UF estimates $54,010 for 2026–27: $34,620 in tuition and fees plus living costs, books, transport and personal expenses. Health insurance adds roughly $3,185 a year according to the International Center.

### What scholarships can international students get at UF?

UF considers admitted international freshmen for its non-resident tuition waivers: Alumni up to $8,000, Sunshine up to $16,000 and Gator Nation at $20,000 a year. There is no separate application; UF decides and notifies selected students by mid-March.

### Do I need a WES or ECE evaluation?

Yes. For secondary school outside the US, UF requires a course-by-course evaluation with a GPA calculation from a NACES member, received by the materials deadline of your round.

### Should an international student choose Early Decision or Early Action?

Early Decision commits you to enroll if admitted and prevents comparing offers. Early Action gives an early answer with a May 1 confirmation date, which is safer when your budget is still uncertain.

### Is UF the same as Florida State University or FIU?

No. Florida State is in Tallahassee and FIU is in Miami. They are separate public universities with their own applications.
