# University of Pécs: Admission, Programmes and Fees

The University of Pécs (Pécsi Tudományegyetem, PTE) traces its history to 1367, when King Louis the Great founded Hungary's first university in the city. Today it has about 25,000 students, more than 5,700 of them international, and 10 faculties. The medical school, with 3,500 students from 67 countries, is the main draw, but PTE also teaches engineering, computing, business, languages and music in English. Students starting in 2027/28 pay $16,750 a year for medicine, $17,350 for dentistry including materials, and $9,540 (€8,400) for pharmacy. Most online applications close on 30 June 2027, and medical and dental interviews run from 3 March to 14 July 2027, mostly online.

## Who Pécs suits {#section-1}

Pécs appeals to applicants who want English-taught medicine with clear, flexible admission rules: no age limit, no compulsory foundation course and no English certificate for medicine or dentistry. You can take the written test and interview online and sit the exam up to three times under one application. The medical school reports that it placed 452nd in the THE 2026 subject ranking for medicine and remained the top-ranked Hungarian medical school outside Budapest.

For engineering and IT students the draw is price: civil, mechanical and computer science engineering bachelor's cost $3,400 a semester, and computer science $2,840 (€2,500). The English-taught Business Administration bachelor's is accredited by EFMD Global, the international business-school association, which the programme page highlights.

Consider alternatives if:

- you want Budapest and its internship market — look at [ELTE](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-elte), the [Budapest University of Technology and Economics](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-bme) and [Corvinus University](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-corvinus);
- physics is stronger for you than chemistry: the Pécs written test always covers biology and chemistry, while [Debrecen](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-debrecen) lets you take physics instead of chemistry;
- you hope a preparatory course will make up for unfinished schooling — PTE's language preparation does not replace a missing secondary qualification.

## Medical school and pharmacy programmes {#section-2}

The $200 application fee does not apply to pharmacy and Biotechnology BSc applicants. The $220 registration fee is paid with the first semester. An exam organised by the medical school's admissions office costs $250 per attempt; if you sit it through a representative in your country, ask them about the fee and format.

### Preparatory courses for medicine

The medical school's International Studies Center prepares applicants in three 400-hour stages: Milestone (up to B1), Upgrade (up to B2) and Gateway (academic English plus the subjects). Courses end with the international ECL language exam.

Add a $170 (€150) registration fee and a $110 (€100) application fee. The course is optional and does not lead to admission on its own: medicine and dentistry admit on exam performance only.

These fees come from the programme pages for the 2027/28 intake. Deadlines differ: Business Administration closes on 31 May 2027, the Computer Science Engineering BSc and MSc and Mechanical Engineering BSc on 15 June, and the other programmes in the table on 30 June. English options also include communication and media, archaeology, Liberal Arts, and master's degrees in nutritional sciences, biomedical engineering, business development and structural engineering, plus classical performance and electronic music. Some programmes are taught in German, French, Italian or Spanish. Non-medical application fees are $160–170 (€140–150) or $150 depending on the faculty.

## How to apply {#section-4}

### Steps for every programme

1. Pick a programme in the international.pte.hu catalogue and click Apply Now.
2. Register on the application site, fill in the form, upload documents and pay the fee.
3. Once the fee arrives, your file is assessed and you are invited to an exam or online interview.
4. Successful applicants receive a Conditional Acceptance Letter and a tuition invoice.
5. After payment, the university issues the Letter of Admission, which you use for the visa and travel.

### Medicine and dentistry requirements

- a school certificate with the best possible chemistry and biology grades; final-year students submit proof they will graduate in the cycle and bring the certificate by enrolment;
- B2 English — no certificate needed, as English is tested in the exam;
- eligibility for higher education in your home country;
- no age limit.

The exam. In 2027 it is planned to run mostly online. The written part is 100 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 40 minutes: biology (20), chemistry (20), general English (40) and medical English (20). No camera or microphone is needed for the written part, but only a simple calculator is allowed. A paper-based test is also available in Pécs, Budapest or abroad through representatives. The oral is a 20–30-minute interview with a professor via Zoom or MS Teams, in person in Pécs or abroad, covering medical questions and motivation. The school recommends the free OpenStax Biology 2e and Chemistry 2e textbooks. Pharmacy and biotechnology applicants skip the written test and sit only the 20–30-minute interview.

Attempts. You can resit twice, for a total of three attempts under a single application. Stipendium Hungaricum applicants get only one attempt.

2027/28 dates. Submit the online application by 30 June 2027, pay the $200 fee by 2 July; the last exam is on 14 July 2027, with its fee due by 7 July.

### Non-medical programmes

Bachelor's programmes require completed secondary education and the minimum language level; master's programmes require a bachelor's degree from a recognised university. Programme-specific criteria — engineering, for instance, may expect stronger maths — and interview formats are listed on each programme page. The university's language courses prepare you for English-taught study but do not replace a secondary school qualification.

The university estimates a minimum monthly budget of $770 (HUF 250,000) for rent, food and the occasional evening out. A university canteen meal costs $8–11 (HUF 2,500–3,500), and a monthly student bus pass about $13 (HUF 4,100). ## Housing {#section-6}

PTE runs ten dormitories and offers three of them to international students. Rooms have their own bathrooms, bedding is supplied, and the buildings have study rooms, laundry, a cafeteria and a student club.

You can move in on arrival once your dormitory application is approved and the rent is paid; unpaid rooms are not handed over. Bring kitchenware, towels, laundry supplies and a network cable. Private rentals are the alternative for students who want their own flat.

## Scholarships {#section-7}

- [Stipendium Hungaricum](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-stipendium-hungaricum). In the 2026/27 round Russia was a sending partner for all levels and fields, including one-tier medicine, with applications routed through Interobrazovanie. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan and other CIS states are also partners. Remember that scholarship applicants to Pécs medicine get a single exam attempt.

## Visa and residence permit {#section-8}

Russian and most CIS citizens need a residence permit for study, applied for at a Hungarian consulate before travel. Pécs issues the Letter of Admission after tuition is paid, so allow time: the immigration authority has up to 60 days to decide. ## Degree recognition and careers {#section-9}

The medical school attributes the international standing of its diploma to WFME accreditation and EU/EEA rules on professional qualifications. Russia and Hungary have an agreement on mutual recognition of education and qualifications dated 22 November 2018, but doctors in Russia must also complete the Russian licensing procedure. A July exam leaves very little time for the visa, so spring is the realistic window.

## Mistakes to avoid {#section-11}

- Preparing only the sciences. Sixty of the 100 written questions test English, including medical English.
- Mixing up currencies. Medicine and dentistry are billed in US dollars, pharmacy and biotechnology in euros, each with its own bank account.
- Treating the course as a substitute for the exam. Preparation helps, but admission depends solely on the exam result.
- Applying only through Stipendium Hungaricum. Scholarship applicants get one exam attempt; self-funded applicants get three.
- Leaving the exam until July. The last date is 14 July, after which you still need to pay tuition and obtain the permit.

### Do I need IELTS for medicine at Pécs?

No. The medical school expects B2 English but does not ask for a certificate: your English is tested in the written exam and the interview. For non-medical programmes, the minimum language requirement is listed on each programme page.

### Can I take the Pécs entrance exam online?

Yes. In 2027 exams are planned to run mostly online, with the written test on the university's exam platform and the interview via Zoom or MS Teams. Paper-based tests are also held in Pécs, Budapest and abroad through university representatives.

Self-funded applicants can sit it up to three times under one application: the first attempt plus two resits. Stipendium Hungaricum applicants are limited to a single attempt because of capacity and timing constraints.

### What is the deadline for 2027/28?

Online applications for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and most other programmes close on 30 June 2027, and the medical application fee must be paid by 2 July. Some programmes close earlier: Business Administration on 31 May, Computer Science Engineering and Mechanical Engineering on 15 June. The last medical and dental exam is scheduled for 14 July 2027.

### How much is a dormitory in Pécs?

International students are offered rooms in the Szántó, Balassa and Damjanich dormitories at $250 (HUF 79,900) to $320 (HUF 103,600) a month. You can move in only once your dormitory application is approved and the rent is paid.
