Lancaster University: the short answer

Lancaster is a university in North West England that consistently ranks in the UK top ten: 10th in the Complete University Guide 2027 for the fourth year running and 164th in the QS World University Rankings 2027. It is organised around colleges, and living costs are well below London’s.

The university states plainly that the Russian Attestat is not enough for first-year entry. Students need an extra qualification, most often the International Foundation at the on-campus study centre, or A-levels or the IB.

  • 2027/28 international tuition: $34,840 (£26,300) for law, $35,900 (£27,100) for economics and $41,990 (£31,700) for computer science and psychology.
  • Foundation 2026/27: $26,490 (£19,995) for three terms or $29,810 (£22,500) for four.
  • Good fit: students who value strong UK league-table positions and a quieter student city.
  • Less convenient: for those who want London internships during term.

Lancaster in UK and world rankings

The university’s rankings page lists four 2027 positions: 10th in the Complete University Guide, 26th in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, 27th in the Guardian University Guide and 164th of 1,504 in QS.

The gap between UK and world tables is expected: national guides weigh teaching quality, student satisfaction and graduate outcomes more heavily, while QS leans on research reputation. For an undergraduate, the UK guides are often the more useful signal.

  • Complete University Guide 2027 — 10th in the UK
  • Times and Sunday Times 2027 — 26th; Guardian 2027 — 27th
  • QS World University Rankings 2027 — 164th

The collegiate system and campus life

Lancaster is one of a handful of UK universities with a collegiate system. Every student belongs to a college that runs housing, events and welfare, and the college membership fee for 2026 or 2027 entrants is £40.

Life centres on the campus, where teaching buildings sit beside college residences such as Lonsdale, Grizedale and Fylde. For a first-year, lectures, meals and social life are all within walking distance.

Lancaster programmes and 2027/28 fees

Lancaster has already published 2027 entry fees, shown below. International fees are reviewed every year and are not fixed for the whole degree.

The route for students with a Russian Attestat

Lancaster’s international qualifications list says the Russian Attestat is not sufficient for entry and an additional qualification such as a Foundation Year is required. The same applies to the Kazakh and Ukrainian Attestat.

Your qualificationRouteWhat to check

A-levels (e.g. AAB for Computer Science) or the IBdirect UCAS applicationcourse subject requirements

The International Study Centre is run by INTO Lancaster Limited with the university, and students who finish the Foundation with the required grades progress to year one of their chosen degree. Direct UCAS applicants for 2027 entry face the main deadline of 18:00 UK time on 13 January 2027.

Frequent miscalculations

  • Applying through UCAS with an Attestat alone and losing months before switching to Foundation.
  • Choosing the three-term Foundation with weak English when four terms would give a buffer.
  • Budgeting at last year’s rates when 2027/28 fees are already higher.

English requirements and documents

Lancaster’s standard for undergraduates is IELTS Academic 6.5 with at least 5.5 in each band, and it accepts IELTS One Skill Retake. Some courses ask for less: Computer Science needs 6.0 with 5.5 per band.

  • Passport
  • Translated Attestat, or A-level/IB results
  • IELTS or another accepted test
  • UCAS personal statement and reference
  • Study centre documents for the Foundation

Annual budget and Lancaster scholarships

Because Lancaster is outside London, the Student visa requires £1,171 a month for up to nine months — £10,539, noticeably less than the London figure.

The study centre offers a Regional Scholarship worth up to £3,000 off the first Foundation year. After progression, Lancaster may award a Global Progression Award and a Regional Progression Award of £3,000 a year each, up to £6,000 a year combined; the centre and the university decide these awards.

Living in a Lancaster college

For 2026/27, rooms cost £148.89–276.29 a week depending on the college, bathroom type and catering. Contracts usually run for 40 weeks, and catered options cover 31 weeks, excluding the Christmas and Easter vacations.

After a room is offered, students accept the contract online and pay a £200 deposit, refunded at the end if there are no deductions. Room numbers are not issued in advance, and many students move into town after year one using the university’s approved-housing scheme.

Visa and work after Lancaster

Students need a UK Student visa: the university issues a CAS after the offer, and the student pays the £558 visa fee and the £776 Immigration Health Surcharge for each year. UK Visas and Immigration decides the application.

Graduates can apply for the Graduate visa, which lasts 18 months for applications made from 1 January 2027, so today’s applicants should plan for a year and a half of post-study work.
