University of Salford: Admission, 2027/28 Fees and Scholarships

📍 the UK

The University of Salford is a public institution based in Salford, a separate city within Greater Manchester a few minutes from Manchester city centre. Its focus is applied: business, engineering and acoustics, computing, media, architecture and construction, and health. A Russian school certificate does not give entry to year one; applicants need the university's own International Foundation Year on the Peel Park campus or a first year at a leading Russian university. Full-time degrees for international students starting in 2027/28 cost $22,390–29,300 (£16,920–22,140) a year and the IFY costs $19,770 (£14,940); undergraduates with strong grades receive up to $4,630 (£3,500) off every year of study.

Who Salford suits

Strengths Limits
The foundation year is taught by the university, not an outside college The attestat alone does not open year one
The undergraduate discount applies every year, not just year one Discounts need grades equivalent to BBC or ABB
January starts on some courses and the IFY Popular master's places are confirmed first-come, first-served once conditions are met
Close to Manchester and its job market Not a Russell Group member
Lower fees than the University of Manchester The Russia entry table for master's does not mention the bachelor's degree

Salford suits applicants who want an applied degree in the Manchester area at a moderate price, especially in business, IT, engineering, media or construction. If research standing matters most, compare it with the University of Manchester. The wider list is on our study in the UK page.

After 11 years of school: the International Foundation Year

Salford's Russia page says undergraduate applicants are considered after a recognised foundation year or the first year at a leading Russian university. The main route for school leavers is the university's own International Foundation Year (IFY).

  • Who teaches it: the university's language centre, Salford Languages, together with academic schools, on the Peel Park campus with full access to student services.
  • Format: two semesters full-time, 15–23 timetabled hours a week depending on the stream, plus independent study.
  • How it counts: the IFY is year one of a four-year degree. Passing with the required grade moves you automatically onto one of more than 80 bachelor's degrees.
  • Start: September, and January for some streams; the Art, Design and Media and the Biological Science streams start only in September.
  • 2026 deadlines: applications for the September 2026 IFY closed on 1 July 2026 and offer conditions had to be met by 21 August. Salford publishes the 2027 dates on its deadlines page.

The IFY costs $19,770 (£14,940) for 2027/28 entry and requires IELTS for UKVI Academic 4.5 with no band below 4.0; the IFY deposit amount is stated in the offer letter. Our foundation year guide explains how a foundation compares with A-levels and International Year One.

Undergraduate fees and requirements

International fees for 2027/28 range from $22,390 to $29,300 (£16,920–22,140) a year by course. Example: BSc Computer Science costs $23,980 (£18,120) a year and asks for IELTS 6.0 with no skill below 5.5, and offers Pre-Sessional English or the IFY to applicants below that level; the degree is accredited by BCS, the UK's professional body for IT.

Undergraduate applications go through UCAS, with the equal-consideration deadline for 2027 entry on 13 January 2027; see applying to UK universities. For September 2026, international undergraduates had to meet their offer conditions by 21 August.

Master's degrees

For Russia, Salford's entry table names the specialist diploma awarded after 1991 with an average of 3.25 out of 5 and the magistr degree with an average of 3.0 out of 5. The bachelor's degree is not mentioned there, so a Russian bachelor's graduate should ask admissions to assess the degree before applying in earnest. For Kazakhstan the wording is broader: a specialist or magister degree averaging 3 out of 5, or a bakalavr averaging 3 or above with at least two years of relevant work experience.

Example: MSc Data Science, full-time, starting in January or September, costs international students $26,440 (£19,980) in 2027/28. A compulsory intensive week before teaching reviews statistics, databases and Python or R. English: IELTS 6.0 with 5.5 in each skill.

January 2027 dates: CAS documents by 30 November 2026, induction from 11 January and teaching from 18 January 2027. For September intakes, places go to those who meet their academic conditions first; if a course fills up, applicants are offered the next intake or a deposit refund.

Scholarships and discounts

Award Amount Condition
Global Gold Excellence (bachelor's) $4,630 (£3,500) every year A-level ABB or equivalent; IFY result of 70+
Global Silver Excellence (bachelor's) $3,970 (£3,000) every year A-level BBC or equivalent; IFY result of 65–69
Global Gold Excellence (master's) $3,970 (£3,000) first-class degree
Global Silver Excellence (master's) $3,310 (£2,500) at least a 2:2
IFY Excellence $3,310 (£2,500) for the IFY year high school grades; other qualifications assessed case by case
Prompt payment 3% of the net fee after any scholarship full payment at or before registration

Discounts are applied automatically, but only one award can be held: the highest. The annual undergraduate discount continues only with a good academic record. These rules apply to students starting from September 2026, and the university decides who qualifies. See scholarships in the UK for other funding.

Deposit and payment

Self-funded students pay a $7,280 (£5,500) deposit, without which Salford will not issue an unconditional offer or start the CAS process. The balance can be paid in full with a 3% discount, or in five to seven monthly instalments from the month after the course starts. Use only the university's recommended payment methods; lawful routes from Russia are covered in how to pay for studies abroad from Russia.

Housing and living costs

The main undergraduate hall is Peel Park Quarter on campus, operated by Campus Living Villages under an arrangement with the university. En-suite rooms cost $220–260 (£169.50–199.50) a week in 2026/27, on 42-week (September to late June) or 51-week (to late August) tenancies. A £200 deposit, paid within 48 hours, confirms the booking; international students pay rent in two instalments.

Postgraduates cannot live in Peel Park Quarter. Salford points them to John Lester and Eddie Colman Courts, private blocks run by the same company, with flats of two to four sharing a kitchen.

The university advises budgeting at least $13,950 (£10,539) for a nine-month academic year, the visa minimum of £1,171 a month outside London; for visa applications from 30 November 2026 the figure is $14,330 (£10,827). Our student housing guide has more on renting.

Student visa and post-study work

  • The CAS follows the deposit and fulfilment of conditions; apply for the visa no earlier than six months before the course starts.
  • Visa fee $740 (£558); Immigration Health Surcharge $1,030 (£776) per year of leave.
  • Funds held for 28 consecutive days, statement no older than 31 days.
  • Residents of Russia and Kazakhstan need a tuberculosis test at a clinic listed on GOV.UK.
  • IFY students need an English test approved for visas (SELT); see English tests for a UK student visa.
  • The Graduate visa lasts 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027.

UK Visas and Immigration decides the visa. See the UK student visa and Graduate Route guides.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing Salford with the University of Manchester; they are different universities with different degrees.
  • Applying to year one with the attestat alone instead of the IFY or a completed first university year.
  • Leaving master's conditions until late: popular courses fill before any formal deadline.
  • Counting on two discounts: Salford awards only the highest one.
  • Requesting Peel Park Quarter as a postgraduate; the hall is for undergraduates.

Timeline for autumn 2027

  1. October–December 2026: choose a course, sit IELTS for UKVI, check whether your grades reach Gold or Silver.
  2. By 13 January 2027: apply through UCAS (with A-levels, the IB or a completed university year) or directly to the IFY with the attestat.
  3. Spring 2027: accept the offer, pay the £5,500 deposit, book a room.

  5. September 2027: the IFY starts; the bachelor's follows from September 2028.

FAQ

Can I enter the University of Salford after 11 years of school?

Not straight into a bachelor's. Salford considers Russian applicants after a recognised foundation or the first year at a leading Russian university. The most direct route is its own International Foundation Year, and the University of Salford confirms progression once you reach the required grade.

How much does the University of Salford cost?

Full-time degrees for international students cost $22,390–29,300 (£16,920–22,140) a year in 2027/28, and the International Foundation Year costs $19,770 (£14,940). MSc Data Science costs $26,440 (£19,980). The $7,280 (£5,500) deposit is deducted from the fee.

What discounts do international undergraduates receive?

The Global Gold Excellence Scholarship gives £3,500 every year for ABB-level grades and the Global Silver Excellence Scholarship £3,000 every year for BBC-level grades. After the IFY, a result of 70 or more qualifies for Gold and 65–69 for Silver. The university decides eligibility.

Will Salford accept a Russian bachelor's degree for a master's?

Salford's Russia page names only the specialist diploma (average 3.25/5) and the magistr degree (3.0/5). Bachelor's graduates should ask admissions to assess their degree before applying, because the university decides whether the qualification meets the requirement.

When do courses start?

The main intake is September. Some master's courses and the IFY also start in January: in 2027 induction begins on 11 January, and CAS documents are due by 30 November 2026.

Where do Salford students live?

Most undergraduates choose Peel Park Quarter on campus, where an en-suite room costs $220–260 (£169.50–199.50) a week in 2026/27 on a 42- or 51-week tenancy. Postgraduates are pointed to John Lester and Eddie Colman Courts, run by the same operator.
