UWE Bristol (University of the West of England): Admission, 2027/28 Fees and Halls

📍 the UK

The University of the West of England, known as UWE Bristol, is a large public university in Bristol with a practical focus: business, computing, engineering, architecture and construction, law, health and media. It is not the University of Bristol; the city has two separate universities, and UWE's entry requirements and fees are lower. A school leaver from Russia needs a preparation year first, such as the Foundation Certificate at UWE Bristol's International College (run by Kaplan) at $22,100–24,260 (£16,700–18,330) in 2026/27, or a completed first year at a Russian university. For international students starting in 2027/28, BA Business and Management costs $23,160 (£17,500) a year and MSc Data Science costs $23,820 (£18,000).

The University of Bristol is a research-intensive Russell Group member with higher entry grades and fees. When someone mentions "Bristol University", check which institution they mean, because degrees, requirements and budgets differ considerably.

Who UWE Bristol suits

Strengths Limits
Lower undergraduate fees than most Russell Group universities Not a Russell Group member; modest global ranking positions
Applied courses, many with an optional year in industry A school certificate alone does not open year one
An on-campus pathway college with several start dates The college is a separate provider with its own contract
New halls next to Frenchay campus, bills included Bristol housing is expensive: halls start at about £8,800 for 42 weeks
A large city with tech, aerospace and creative employers The university estimates living costs at £14,000–15,000 a year

UWE Bristol fits applicants who want a practical degree in a big city at a moderate price, especially in business, IT, engineering or architecture. If research standing matters more, compare it with Cardiff University or the University of Bath; the full list is on our study in the UK page.

Entry after 11 years of school

UWE's Russia page sets out three routes:

  • Attestat plus a preparation course: the Russian school certificate is considered together with a successfully completed foundation or bridging programme.
  • First year at a Russian university: applicants who have passed the first year of a Russian degree are considered for year one at UWE.
  • Bachelor's or specialist diploma: graduates may be considered for advanced entry to year two or three, or for a Pre-Master's.

The usual choice after school is UWE Bristol's International College, run by Kaplan International Pathways. It is a separate provider with its own contract and payments, although teaching takes place on the university site. The length of the foundation depends mainly on your English level at the start.

College course Leads to 2026/27 fee
Foundation Certificate (three streams) year one of a bachelor's $22,100–24,260 (£16,700–18,330)
International Year One (three streams) year two of a bachelor's $22,340–23,610 (£16,880–17,840)
Pre-Master's master's degree from $23,770 (£17,960)

Completing the course at the required level with good attendance leads to your chosen UWE degree. Kaplan takes £500 off its own housing if you book within two weeks of receiving your place. Our foundation year guide compares the foundation, International Year One and A-levels.

Undergraduate fees and requirements

Example: BA (Hons) Business and Management for 2027/28 entry costs international students $23,160 (£17,500) a year. English: IELTS Academic 6.0 with 5.5 in each skill, or an accepted equivalent. Students typically have about 12 timetabled hours a week and some 28 hours of independent study. Many courses offer a placement year at a reduced fee.

Home students pay £10,050 in 2027/28, while international fees vary by course. Undergraduate applications go through UCAS, with the equal-consideration deadline for 2027 entry on 13 January 2027; see applying to UK universities.

Master's degrees

UWE considers holders of a good Russian bachelor's or specialist diploma for master's study. Example: MSc Data Science, one year full-time, starting in September or January, costs international students $23,820 (£18,000) in 2027/28. It normally asks for at least a UK 2:2 equivalent in a relevant subject, and experience of coding or quantitative methods is strongly recommended. English: IELTS Academic 6.5 with 5.5 in each skill.

Scholarships

  • International Student Scholarship: up to $5,290 (£4,000) off the first year of a bachelor's or taught master's. There is no application; the university selects recipients among full-fee international students and contacts them after the offer. Accepting the award means confirming you can cover living costs and the remaining fee under UKVI rules.
  • UWE Bristol Global Success Scholarship: up to $11,910 (£9,000) over a three-year bachelor's, made up of £2,500 in year one, £3,000 in year two and £3,500 in year three. Eligible applicants are invited by email and have 14 days to apply; the award continues with active engagement and cannot be combined with another UWE fee reduction.
  • International College scholarships follow the college's own terms.

The university decides who receives each award. More options are in scholarships in the UK.

Halls and living costs

Frenchay campus has two halls, Purdown View and the new Kingfisher Court, which opens for 2026/27. Prices for 2026/27 are for a 42-week contract:

Room type Weekly 42 weeks
8-bed flat, shared bathroom (Purdown View) $280 (£209.51) $11,650 (£8,799)
En-suite room, 4–8-bed flat $330 (£248.70) $13,820 (£10,445)
Premium en-suite, 4-bed flat (Purdown View) $390 (£291.79) $16,220 (£12,255)
Studio $400 (£300.54) $16,700 (£12,623)

A $530 (£400) advance rent payment confirms the booking and is deducted from later instalments; international students pay in one or four instalments. Room offers go out from June with five days to accept. In 2026, full-time foundation and first-year students applying through the normal UCAS cycle were offered a room if they applied for housing by 1 September; dates for 2027 are published separately.

UWE suggests budgeting £14,000–15,000 a year for living costs excluding tuition, roughly $18,530–19,850. The visa threshold is lower: £1,171 a month for nine months, $13,950 (£10,539), rising to $14,330 (£10,827) for applications from 30 November 2026, plus unpaid tuition. More on renting in our student housing guide.

Paying from Russia

UWE states that Russian Visa and Mastercard cards are not accepted through its payment provider Flywire, while bank transfers from Russia in the destination currency are still accepted; it advises payers to check sanctions-related limits with their bank in advance. Lawful payment options are covered in how to pay for studies abroad from Russia.

Student visa and post-study work

  • The CAS comes from the university or the International College; apply for the visa no earlier than six months before the course starts.
  • Visa fee $740 (£558); Immigration Health Surcharge $1,030 (£776) for each year of leave.
  • Funds held for 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of the application.
  • A tuberculosis test is required for residents of Russia and Kazakhstan, at clinics listed on GOV.UK.
  • Foundation students need IELTS for UKVI or another approved SELT; see English tests for a UK student visa.
  • The Graduate visa lasts 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027.

UK Visas and Immigration decides the visa. See our UK student visa and Graduate Route guides.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing UWE Bristol with the University of Bristol.
  • Applying to year one with the attestat alone instead of a foundation or a completed first university year.
  • Trying to pay with a Russian card through Flywire, which will be declined; a bank transfer in sterling is the working route.
  • Budgeting only the visa minimum when UWE itself estimates £14,000–15,000 a year.
  • Applying late for halls: rooms are allocated with regard to application date, so a late form narrows the choice.

Timeline for autumn 2027

  3. Spring 2027: accept the offer and apply for halls.
  4. Summer 2027: hold funds for 28 days, take the TB test, receive the CAS and apply for the visa.
