French business schools set their own fees and run their own selection. Their flagship, the Programme Grande École, marketed in English as the Master in Management, costs $25,660 to $33,480 (€22,600–29,485) a year at emlyon, ESCP and HEC Paris for the 2027 intake. In the Financial Times 2025 European ranking, six French schools made the top ten: INSEAD, HEC Paris, ESCP, ESSEC, EDHEC and emlyon. Before you pay, check the degree's status: the French State recognises programmes carrying a "visa" or the "grade de master", and since June 2026 these programmes are assessed by Hcéres, the national evaluation council, after the CEFDG commission was abolished.

What a French business school offers
"Business school" covers five different products in France. Confusing them is the most common mistake, and it determines whether you end up with a State-recognised degree.
| Programme | For whom | Length | Degree status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bachelor, BBA | school leavers | 3–4 years | some carry a State visa or Licence grade; check each one |
| Programme Grande École / Master in Management | bachelor's graduates, sometimes after two university years | 2–3 years including internships and an optional gap year | leading schools hold the grade de master |
| MSc | specialists: two-year programmes after three years of university, one-year programmes after four | 1–2 years | a school degree at five-year level; some carry the Conférence des Grandes Écoles (CGE) label |
| Mastère Spécialisé (MS) | after a master's, or four years of study plus three years of work | coursework, a professional assignment and a thesis | CGE label, school degree |
| MBA and Executive MBA | experienced professionals | 1–2 years | school degree, judged by international accreditation |
The distinction matters in practice. The grade de master gives the same right to further study as a university Master. A CGE label on an MSc or MS does not make it a State degree, but French law lists CGE-labelled MSc degrees and the Mastère Spécialisé among the qualifications that entitle graduates to the post-study job-search permit.
How to check that a degree is State-recognised
Until June 2026, business school programmes were reviewed by the CEFDG commission, whose opinions the ministry used to award a visa or the Licence or Master grade. Decree No. 2026-551 of 26 June 2026 abolished the commission and moved its work to Hcéres's private higher education department. CEFDG opinions stay online until 31 August 2027, and the full list of accredited management school programmes appears in the ministry's Official Bulletin No. 28 of 9 July 2026.
In practice:
- Find the exact programme name in Bulletin No. 28 or the CEFDG list; one school can run programmes with a visa, with the grade and with no status at all.
- Look up the entry in the national register of professional qualifications (RNCP). NEOMA's Master in Management, for example, states the grade de master and RNCP level 7 (record No. 37683).
- For MSc and MS programmes, search the list of programmes carrying a Conférence des Grandes Écoles label, which covers more than 500 programmes across schools.
- Check international accreditation on the accreditor's own site. On 30 September 2026, EFMD's EQUIS list included 25 French institutions, among them HEC Paris, ESSEC, ESCP, EDHEC, emlyon, SKEMA, NEOMA, KEDGE, Audencia, Toulouse Business School, INSEAD and the university schools IAE Aix-Marseille and Université Paris-Dauphine. AACSB and AMBA keep their own registers.
The Financial Times 2025 ranking: French schools
The FT's composite European ranking draws on the paper's specialist tables: graduate salaries and career progress, international faculty and students, and gender balance. It measures a school's overall strength, not whether a given programme suits you.
| European rank, FT 2025 | School |
|---|---|
| 1 | INSEAD |
| 2 | HEC Paris |
| 4 | ESCP Business School |
| 7 | ESSEC Business School |
| 9 | EDHEC Business School |
| 10 | emlyon business school |
| 16 | SKEMA Business School |
| 24 | Grenoble Ecole de Management |
| 26 | Audencia |
| 28 | NEOMA Business School |
| 32 | KEDGE Business School |
| 47 | IESEG School of Management |
A further 14 French schools ranked between 50th and 100th, including Excelia, Montpellier Business School, Rennes School of Business, ICN, ESSCA, TBS Education and IAE Aix-Marseille. With 26 institutions in the top 100, France has more than any other country.
What business school in France costs
| School and programme | Intake | Tuition | Other costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| HEC Paris, Master in Management | 2027/28 | $33,480 (€29,485) for the first year; $66,960 (€58,970) for the programme | a further $2,840 (€2,500) for international students, $200 (€180) application fee, $5,680 (€5,000) non-refundable deposit |
| ESCP, Master in Management | September 2027 | $32,700 (€28,800) a year for non-European students; $28,500 (€25,100) with a European passport | $200 (€180) application fee |
| emlyon, Master in Management | 2027/28 | $25,660 (€22,600) a year for two years | $160 (€140) application fee, $3,970 (€3,500) non-refundable deposit |
| NEOMA, Master in Management | January or September 2027 | $42,010 (€37,000) for years one and two combined | $110 (€100) application fee, $570 (€500) administrative fee a year |
| Private schools generally | — | Campus France's usual range: $6,810–20,440 (€6,000–18,000) annually, some above | deposits, insurance, housing |
Compare that with a public university: a Master costs $4,490 (€3,950) a year at the 2026/27 differentiated rate for non-EU nationals. University management schools are worth a look if a private school is out of reach. IAE Aix-Marseille, Université Paris-Dauphine and Toulouse School of Management (TSM) hold EQUIS accreditation, and national Master degrees at universities follow the state rates. Dauphine is a grand établissement with its own rules, so check the fee for your programme on its website.
HEC puts a student's living costs at about $1,700 (€1,500) a month in 2026; for the visa, the legal floor is $1,000 (€877.50) monthly. School scholarships usually reduce tuition: NEOMA offers international applicants up to $11,920 (€10,500), in limited numbers. Many programmes also offer apprenticeship contracts (alternance), where a company pays tuition and a salary; international students should confirm eligibility with the school before enrolling.
How international applicants get in: requirements and dates
Programme Grande École tracks for international applicants usually require a bachelor's degree earned outside France after at least three years of study. Emlyon also requires at least the last two years of study to have been completed outside France.
Management test. ESCP accepts GMAT, GRE, CAT and TAGE MAGE with no minimum score, and lets applicants with non-French degrees sit the ESCP test instead, but only in Berlin, London, Madrid or Turin. Emlyon offers its own online management test, although it does not qualify you for the Excellence Scholarship. NEOMA only recommends GMAT or GRE.
English. ESCP requires IELTS 6.5 or the equivalent in TOEFL, TOEIC or Cambridge exams. Emlyon recommends C1 and accepts TOEIC, IELTS, TOEFL iBT and Cambridge. NEOMA also accepts the Duolingo English Test for its English track. For applicants in Russia: Campus France Russia states that IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge exams are not currently held there.
2027 intake dates.
- ESCP: four rounds, closing 22 October 2026, 14 January, 11 March and 4 May 2027; the last is open only to applicants with studies outside France.
- Emlyon: applications from 13 October 2026 to 28 June 2027, reviewed on a rolling basis and closed early if the class fills.
- NEOMA: by the end of June 2027 for September 2027 and by 18 October 2026 for January 2027; decisions arrive two weeks after the interview.
Join a School in France, run by the Paris Île-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry, takes one application for the Master in Management programmes of five schools: emlyon, HEC Paris, ESCP, SKEMA and Audencia. You cannot apply to the same school both directly and through the platform; HEC, for example, processes only the first validated application.
Once admitted, residents of countries covered by Études en France, including Russia, complete the procedure as self-enrolled candidates for the visa only. See studying in France for Russian citizens.
Business school bachelor's programmes after secondary school
Without a bachelor's degree, look at BBA programmes:
- ESSEC Global BBA: four years and 240 ECTS on campuses in Cergy, Singapore and Rabat, each with an English track; the ministry recognises it as a bachelor's degree.
- Emlyon Global BBA: four years with French and English tracks, recognised at four-year level.
- The HEC Paris and Bocconi double bachelor's in data and society: B2 English plus SAT, ACT or Bocconi's online test; the first year is in Milan and costs $26,120 (€23,000) in 2026/27.
A French public university costs a fraction of that but teaches in French. Routes are compared in Bachelor's degrees in France.
Matching the programme to your goal
| Goal | What to look at |
|---|---|
| Consulting, finance or an international career in Europe | Master in Management at an FT top-ten school, employment reports, double degrees |
| Tight budget | a university Master in management or an IAE: $4,490 (€3,950) a year at the 2026/27 differentiated rate |
| No bachelor's degree yet | a BBA or a university bachelor's |
| Three or more years of work experience | an MBA; compare with MBA in the UK and MBA in the USA |
| Staying to work in France | grade de master, a CGE-labelled MSc or Mastère Spécialisé, internships and French |

Common mistakes
- Choosing by school name without checking whether the programme holds the grade de master or is only a school diploma.
- Comparing first-year prices only, when NEOMA quotes two years together and deposits and fees come on top everywhere.
- Leaving GMAT or English until the last round, when fewer places remain.
- Assuming an English track removes the need for French: internships and jobs in France still require it.
- Counting on an apprenticeship to cover tuition before confirming the rules for international students.
- Applying to one school both directly and through Join a School in France.
How StudyU helps
Choosing between a MiM, MSc, MBA and a university master's, comparing schools on degree status, cost and career outcomes, and preparing essays, CVs and visa documents are provided under an agreement with StudyU; the business school makes the admission and scholarship decisions, and the French consulate the visa decision.
FAQ
In the Financial Times 2025 European ranking, six French schools are in the top ten: INSEAD (1st), HEC Paris (2nd), ESCP (4th), ESSEC (7th), EDHEC (9th) and emlyon (10th). SKEMA, Grenoble Ecole de Management, Audencia, NEOMA and KEDGE follow. The ranking reflects overall strength, not whether a specific programme fits you.
For the 2027 intake, the Master in Management costs from $25,660 (€22,600) a year at emlyon to $33,480 (€29,485) for the first year at HEC Paris, and non-European students at ESCP pay $32,700 (€28,800) a year. Campus France puts private school fees generally at $6,810–20,440 (€6,000–18,000) a year or more.
Not always. ESCP accepts GMAT, GRE, CAT and TAGE MAGE and offers its own test on some campuses to applicants with non-French degrees. Emlyon has its own online test, and NEOMA only recommends GMAT or GRE. Check each programme page, as requirements change from one intake to the next.
Yes. Most major schools run programmes fully in English, such as emlyon's Master in Management. For internships, jobs in France and daily life, however, French is close to essential. If you want to stay after graduating, start learning it in year one.
It is the ministry's recognition that the programme's degree is at Master level, giving the same right to further study as a university Master. Since June 2026, management school programmes are assessed by Hcéres, and the full list was published in Official Bulletin No. 28 of 9 July 2026.
Apply directly or through Join a School in France, take a management test and, if you need IELTS or TOEFL, sit it outside Russia, then complete the interview. Once admitted, Russian residents complete Études en France for the visa only. The school decides on admission and the consulate on the visa.
