Studying Medicine Abroad: 12 Countries Compared, 2026/27 Fees and Degree Recognition in Russia

You can train as a doctor abroad after finishing school in Russia, Kazakhstan or another CIS country, but the options boil down to three routes. The first is studying in the local language: Czech- and Slovak-taught medicine is tuition-free, most German public universities charge no tuition, and Austria charges a modest semester fee, though you usually need a year or more for the language and science subjects. The second is a paid English-taught programme: for 2026/27 a year costs from $6,810 (€6,000) at the Faculty of Medicine in Niš, Serbia, to $27,540 (€24,250) at the First Faculty of Medicine of Charles University and $27,550–29,000 at the private Istinye University in Istanbul, and UK medical schools start at $62,260 (£47,000). The third is the United States, where medical school only begins after a bachelor's degree. Whatever you choose, a foreign medical degree does not let you practise in Russia automatically: you need recognition of the degree (unless a treaty covers it), a Roszdravnadzor equivalence decision and specialist accreditation.

This guide compares 12 countries in one table, works out the cost of the full degree rather than year one, explains which countries accept an 11-year school certificate, summarises visa access for Russian citizens and sets out the steps for practising medicine in Russia or Kazakhstan afterwards. Each row links to our detailed country guide.

The table shows tuition only, taken from published university fee schedules for 2026/27 unless a cell names another intake year. Accommodation, insurance, visa costs and books come on top. Georgia is covered separately in our guide to studying medicine in Georgia, because its admission rules for foreigners and its recognition questions differ.

Three routes and who each one suits

Free or nearly free, in the local language

Czechia and Slovakia charge no tuition for Czech- and Slovak-taught degrees, whatever your citizenship. Most German states charge nothing for a first degree at a public university, and Austria charges third-country nationals $830 (€726.72) per semester. The price is low, but the entry cost is time: reaching a level of language at which you can follow anatomy lectures and sit exams, then competing with local school leavers or inside a narrow quota for foreigners.

This route suits a strong biology and chemistry student who can invest a year in language preparation. It suits less well anyone who wants to start straight after school — and Russian citizens aiming for Czechia, which currently refuses study visas at the embassy stage.

Paid, in English

English-taught medicine is offered by public universities in Italy, Serbia, Hungary, Slovakia and Czechia, by private universities in Turkey, by Chinese universities approved for MBBS, and by UK medical schools. Here you can often start in the year you finish school: Hungarian universities accept the Russian school certificate and run their own exams, and Czech English-taught faculties test applicants between January and September. The key questions are the budget for all six years and the language of the clinic.

Studying in English does not remove the local language. Patients in Prague and Budapest speak Czech and Hungarian, so these languages are part of the curriculum of English-taught programmes; at Semmelweis students meet Hungarian patients from the pre-clinical years. Without the language, clinical rotations turn into passive observation.

Via a bachelor's degree: the USA

In the United States you study medicine after a four-year bachelor's degree with prerequisite science courses and the MCAT, followed by four years of medical school and residency. Few medical schools admit international applicants, and many expect at least a year of study at a US or Canadian college plus proof that every year will be funded. This is an 8-year-plus, six-figure route that makes sense when your goal is to practise in the USA.

What the whole degree costs

Year one is one sixth of the bill. The figures below multiply the published 2026/27 tuition (2027/28 for Aston and Cambridge) by the standard length of the programme, without living costs or future fee rises.

Programme Fee Whole degree
Faculty of Medicine, Niš, English $6,810 (€6,000) per year × 6 ≈ $40,880 (€36,000)
Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, English $9,080 (€8,000) per year × 6 ≈ $54,500 (€48,000)
Faculty of Medicine, Palacký University, Olomouc $14,190 (€12,500) per year × 6 ≈ $85,160 (€75,000)
Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University, Bratislava $14,760 (€13,000) per year × 6 ≈ $88,570 (€78,000)
First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Prague $27,540 (€24,250) per year × 6 ≈ $165,220 (€145,500)
Istinye University, Istanbul, English, paid annually upfront $27,550 per year × 6 ≈ $165,300
Aston University, Birmingham $62,260 (£47,000) per year × 5 ≈ $311,300
University of Cambridge, pre-clinical rate for 2027/28 $93,460 (£70,554) per year × 6 ≈ $560,770 plus an annual college fee

Comenius University states that a student pays the same tuition every year of the standard study period; most other universities review fees annually. Living costs come on top: the Italian consulate requires proof of at least $11,560 (€10,179.85) per year, the German visa requires $13,520 (€11,904), and the official Study in Czechia portal budgets $570–910 (€500–800) per month for life in Czechia.

An 11-year school certificate: where you can start straight away

Schooling in Russia and Kazakhstan lasts 11 years, while many countries expect 12. This decides whether you start a few months after graduation or 18 months later.

Country With an 11-year certificate What you usually add
Hungary apply in your final school year and upload the certificate in summer only the university exam and English
Czechia, English-taught a start in the year you finish school is possible recognition (nostrification) of the certificate
Slovakia admission after certificate recognition recognition plus the entrance exam
Serbia admission after certificate recognition recognition by the Qualifications Agency
Italy 11 years do not meet the 12-year schooling requirement a year at a university at home or a foundation course
Germany no direct access to medicine as a rule a preparatory college (M course) or 1–2 years at a Russian university, plus German C1
Austria accepted, but German C1 and MedAT are required language and test preparation
Spain via certificate recognition and UNEDasiss PCE exams in biology and chemistry for a competitive score
United Kingdom almost never directly A-levels or IB with chemistry and biology at a high level
China, Turkey admission on documents and university requirements English, and often the CSCA test for China

Check the Italian rule early: without the twelfth year a university will not enrol you, however well you score on the IMAT.

Exams and language: what to sit and when

  • IMAT (Italy): one test a year, 60 questions in 100 minutes. Registration for IMAT 2026 closed on 9 September; for 2027/28 the ministry has already set 31 October 2027 as the visa application deadline.
  • UCAT (UK): the last testing day for 2027 entry was 24 September 2026, so anyone who missed it is now planning for 2028.
  • MedAT (Austria): registration in March, the test in July.
  • Faculty exams in Czechia, Slovakia, Serbia and Hungary: biology and chemistry, sometimes physics. Czech-taught applications are usually due by 28 February (15 March in Olomouc).
  • Spain: PCE exams, plus Spanish at B2 (DELE or SIELE) for Madrid.
  • Language of instruction: German C1 for Germany and Austria; English at the level each university checks by certificate or its own test.

Visa access for Russian citizens

The country decides not only whether the faculty admits you but also whether you get a visa. The current picture:

  • Czechia is closed at the application stage: Government Regulation No. 55/2024 makes visa and residence applications by Russian citizens at Czech embassies inadmissible, and the consular section in Moscow says so explicitly.
  • Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Italy and Spain accept study applications from Russian citizens through their embassies, consulates or visa centres in Russia.
  • The USA interviews Russian citizens in Astana and Warsaw.
  • Serbia lets Russian citizens in visa-free for 30 days, and the study residence permit is issued locally.
  • For short Schengen trips to an exam or open day, note that since November 2025 the EU no longer issues multiple-entry visas to Russian citizens.

A destination-by-destination overview of visas, payments and recognition is in our guide to studying abroad as a Russian citizen.

Practising medicine in Russia with a foreign degree

Since 1 January 2023 the path has three steps.

  1. Recognition of the degree. If Russia has no mutual recognition treaty with your country of study, the degree goes through a Rosobrnadzor assessment carried out by the Glavexpertcentr. Treaties exist with Italy, Spain, Hungary, Slovakia, Serbia and China, for example. The treaty list on the Glavexpertcentr website contains no agreements with Czechia, Germany, Austria, the UK or the USA, and the only Turkish agreement covers seafarers' diplomas, so a Turkish medical degree needs the assessment. The application for the assessment is filed via Gosuslugi, the state fee is 6,500 roubles and the review takes up to 30 working days.
  2. Roszdravnadzor decision. The graduate applies for confirmation that the foreign education meets Russian qualification requirements, separately for each specialty, by post, in person in Moscow or online. Roszdravnadzor has up to 25 working days to review the file.
  3. Specialist accreditation. With a positive decision, the graduate applies to the Central Accreditation Commission under the regulation approved by Russian Ministry of Health Order No. 709n.

While you study, keep the curriculum with hours for every subject, confirmations of clinical placements and documents on the final practical year. Rebuilding this file from another country six years later is far harder.

Kazakhstan works differently: the National Center for Higher Education Development recognises the document (via eGov or a public service centre), and recognition does not give the right to practise — access to practice, internship and specialist certification are separate steps.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing by the first-year fee. A gap between $6,810 and $27,540 a year becomes about $124,000 over six years.
  • Assuming an English-taught programme works without the local language. Patients speak the local language, and it is examined as part of the curriculum.
  • Checking the faculty but not the visa. For Russian citizens Czechia is closed at the embassy stage, and a strong exam result will not change that.
  • Forgetting the twelfth school year when aiming for Italy or Germany.
  • Leaving recognition until graduation. The country where you will practise decides which clinical training records you need.
  • Treating US medical school as an option straight after school; it follows a bachelor's degree.

FAQ

Among destinations with published 2026/27 fees, the most affordable are Serbia ($6,810–9,080 a year at public faculties), China ($4,480–6,380 at universities on the MBBS list) and Italy, where public university fees depend on family income and citizenship. Italy has the competitive IMAT, and in China and Serbia you will need the local language for clinical work.

Yes, in the local language: Czech- and Slovak-taught medicine is tuition-free, and German public universities usually charge no tuition. The trade-offs are a language year, strong competition and living costs. For Russian citizens, Czechia is currently closed at the visa stage.

As an educational qualification, yes — either under a mutual recognition treaty or after a Rosobrnadzor assessment. To work as a doctor you also need a Roszdravnadzor decision on equivalence with qualification requirements and successful specialist accreditation.

In Hungary, Serbia, China, Turkey and on Czech English-taught programmes, yes, if you meet the university's requirements. Italy requires 12 years of schooling, Germany expects a preparatory college or university study at home, and UK medical schools expect A-levels or the IB.

In Europe and Asia usually six years in a single integrated programme; Germany's standard period is six years and three months, and the UK takes five or six years. In the USA it is four years of bachelor's study and four years of medical school, followed by residency.

Sometimes. The receiving faculty compares curricula and looks for free places in later years. Austria, for example, considers transfers into later years for students with 180 ECTS credits or more (150 in Linz) and German at C1.

Other figures in the table come from our country guides, where each amount links to the official university or government page. ECB reference rate of 29.09.2026: €1 = $1.1355; £1 ≈ $1.3247 (ECB cross rate); $1 ≈ CNY 6.703. Rounding step: $1 below $100, otherwise $10.

Building a shortlist that matches your certificate, language and budget, checking faculty requirements and preparing the application documents are provided under an agreement with StudyU.
