What Exams Are Required to Apply to Turkish Universities?

What Exams Are Required to Apply to Turkish Universities? - StudyU

There is no single entrance-exam rule for all Turkish universities. Check the selected university’s current international-admission route, accepted qualifications and results, and whether your profile is eligible. A TR-YÖS result is relevant only where the university accepts or requires it; other routes may use different results or school documents. This guide separates admission tests from language requirements, with a focus on private universities.

Overview

Language Proficiency Exams (English or Turkish)

Check language requirements at both application and programme entry. Universities set their own accepted certificates, internal assessments and exemptions; some require evidence when you apply. A missing result may affect eligibility or the offer conditions, so do not assume it is irrelevant to admission or funding. Confirm any preparatory route before paying.

Commonly accepted language exams:

  • TOEFL iBT (English)
Check the selected programme’s accepted test version, overall and component scores, result validity and submission deadline before booking. Ask about IELTS or other alternatives separately; do not transfer another university’s score threshold to your application.
  • Internal Exams (English and Turkish)
Most-though not all-universities offer an internal language exam developed by the university itself. This exam is free and usually takes place a few weeks before the academic year starts. Sample questions from previous years are often available on the university’s official website.

  • CPE, CAE, FCE, PTE, YÖKDİL, YDS, E-YDS, and others (English)
In addition to TOEFL, Turkish universities accept various other language proficiency exams. The accepted list varies by institution.
  • TÖMER and other Turkish-language evidence
Check which centre or examination the university accepts and the level required for your programme. The required level and submission deadline are set by the institution, rather than chosen by the applicant to match their current skills.

Note:
If you do not meet the programme’s language requirement, ask whether the university offers a preparatory route, another accepted test or a later entry point. Confirm eligibility, maximum duration, fees and progression conditions; language preparation is not an automatic option for every programme.

Standardized Exams

In most cases, standardized exams like the SAT or ACT are not mandatory for admission. However, high scores can increase your chances of receiving a scholarship. Each university may have its own list of accepted international or local exams.

Exams for Master’s and PhD Programs

Master’s and doctoral programmes set their own test requirements. Check whether the chosen programme requires GRE, GMAT or ALES for your applicant category, and distinguish thesis-based from non-thesis admission rules.

Conclusion & How We Help

Before applying, confirm the programme’s academic and language requirements separately. Accepted evidence can include a recognised examination, a university assessment or an approved exemption. Entrance tests and scholarships follow their own rules; no single test policy applies to every Turkish degree.

The exam matrix at a glance

Some private-university routes assess school documents without an external entrance exam; confirm the exact program’s rules. For public universities, check the accepted results and eligibility in the current international-admission announcement, including whether TR-YÖS is required. Creative programs may add a portfolio or practical assessment. Master’s and doctoral programs set their own academic and test requirements. Language evidence or a university assessment is a separate check.

SAT instead of YÖS

Where the university accepts SAT, compare its required score and result deadline with the TR-YÖS route before choosing a test. Use the current accepted-results list; an old YÖS guide may describe a former university examination. Exam acceptance, minimum scores and selection remain programme-specific.

Your exam calendar for a September intake

Start by choosing programs and checking their admission deadlines, accepted tests and result-validity rules. Where TR-YÖS is relevant, use the ÖSYM registration and exam calendar; do not assume every university runs its own YÖS. Check SAT dates separately if your chosen route accepts it, and work backwards from the university’s application deadline. A parallel private-university application can provide another option, but admission and availability remain the university’s decision.

FAQ

Check whether your school certificate qualifies for the selected university’s international-admission route. The university confirms eligibility, any required entrance result and the conditions for final enrolment; an 11-year certificate does not establish the same route for every applicant.

The university publishes the accepted certificates, scores and any exemptions for the program’s teaching language. Check these before booking TOEFL, IELTS or a Turkish-language test, and ask whether the university offers its own assessment or a preparatory route.

Opening dates and deadlines vary by university, program and intake. Check the active admissions calendar and the deadline for any separate scholarship application; early submission does not guarantee admission or a better discount.

Official sources

  • ÖSYM: official 2026 TR-YÖS/1 announcement — the exam date, application window and official 2026 TR-YÖS/1 application route. This announcement is specific to 2026 TR-YÖS/1; later cycles are published separately.
  • ÖSYM: official TR-YÖS exam (2026) — the official calendar and application route for TR-YÖS/1 in 2026. Each university publishes whether the result is required for the selected program.
  • YÖK Atlas: official program catalogue — program availability, institution and stated language of instruction. International quotas and tuition require the university's own current source.

Rules change. Open the active cycle before applying or paying, and confirm program requirements with the selected university.
