Air Traffic Control in Turkey

Air Traffic Control is a four-year bachelor's taught in a school of civil aviation that prepares you to keep aircraft safely separated on the ground, around airports and en route. In the StudyU catalogue the international option is İstanbul Nişantaşı University, which teaches it in Turkish, lists the fee at $8,000 a year and states that applicants must pass the faculty's aptitude exam and provide an occupational health report.

A university diploma is not the same as a controller licence. To control live traffic you need the rating issued under civil aviation rules, a class 3 medical, language proficiency and on-the-job training with an air navigation service provider, which in Türkiye is the state airports authority DHMİ.

The programme combines aviation theory with simulator practice. Early semesters cover air law, meteorology, navigation, aircraft general knowledge and aviation English. Later semesters move into aerodrome, approach and area control procedures, radiotelephony and phraseology, human factors, fatigue and safety management, with scenarios that grow in traffic density and include emergencies.

Simulator time is the heart of the degree. Before paying a deposit, ask how many hours each student spends controlling traffic in the simulator, whether sessions include a debrief with an instructor, and whether the equipment covers both tower and radar environments. Internships at airports or with ground-handling and airline operations complement the simulator but rarely involve controlling traffic.

Nişantaşı's international fee list marks Air Traffic Control with two conditions: success in the aptitude exams run by the faculty and a mandatory occupational health report. Treat both as real filters, not formalities.

• Academic file: school certificate and transcript (11-year certificate for Russian and CIS applicants), translations and later the Ministry of National Education equivalence document; mathematics and physics grades matter.
• Aptitude exam: typically tests spatial reasoning, attention, memory and multitasking; ask the faculty for the format and date for your intake.
• Health report: an occupational health report is mandatory; the licence route later needs an aviation medical, so learn its vision, hearing and colour-perception standards early.
• Turkish: the programme is Turkish-taught, so you need an accepted Turkish level or a Turkish preparatory year (Nişantaşı lists TÖMER at $1,800 for one year).
• English: not an entry condition for a Turkish-taught programme, but aviation English proficiency is required for licensing.

• Simulator capacity: number of positions, tower and radar modes, and hours per student per semester.
• Instructors: whether current or former licensed controllers teach the practical courses.
• Employer links: agreements with airports, ground services or the air navigation provider for internships and site visits.
• Employment rules: DHMİ is a state enterprise; public-sector recruitment in Türkiye generally has citizenship conditions, so international students should plan for a career route in their home country or with foreign providers.
• Home-country recognition: ask your national aviation authority whether it accepts a Turkish bachelor's as a basis for controller selection or requires its own academy course.

The target role is air traffic controller, but graduates also work in airport operations, flight dispatch, aeronautical information services, airline operations control and aviation safety departments. These roles need the same understanding of airspace and procedures without the controller rating.

Controllers are licensed by the national civil aviation authority (SHGM in Türkiye) after unit training with an air navigation service provider. For international graduates, the decisive step is selection by a provider in the country where you plan to work, which may repeat its own tests and training regardless of your degree.

Nişantaşı's brochure (published October 2025) does not print an academic year, so confirm the fee for your intake in the offer letter. Air Traffic Control is priced well above the university's other aviation programmes (Aircraft Maintenance and Avionics are $3,250 a year) because of simulator training.

Add the aptitude-exam and medical costs, the Turkish preparatory year if needed, housing in Istanbul, health insurance and residence-permit fees.
