Universidad Europea de Madrid: Admission, Fees and Medicine for International Students

📍 Spain

Universidad Europea de Madrid (UEM) is a private university whose main campus sits in Villaviciosa de Odón, a suburb west of Madrid, and whose bachelor's and master's degrees are official Spanish qualifications. For an applicant from outside the EU it stands out for three reasons: a wide choice of English-taught bachelor's degrees in business, engineering, psychology and dentistry; its own entrance test instead of the Spanish university exams; and admission rounds that open in November, months before school graduation. A first year of the English-taught Business Administration degree in Madrid costs about $18,550 (€16,340) in 2026/27, including the one-off admission charges. Medicine is taught in Spanish only, with a separate competition and a Spanish B2 cut-off.

Who UEM suits

UEM fits a student who wants to study in Madrid in English from the first year and does not want to sit the Spanish PCE subject exams that public universities use to rank foreign applicants. English-taught groups exist in business, engineering, psychology, dentistry and design, and places are filled in waves from autumn to summer.

It suits three profiles less well. With a tuition budget under $10,000 a year, a public university such as Complutense is more realistic. If the goal is medicine in English, UEM does not offer it. And if you want to study in the city itself, remember that most programmes run at the suburban Villaviciosa campus. The difference between private and public universities in Spain is explained in our guide to public or private universities in Spain.

Do not confuse UEM with business schools that use "European" in their names. EU Business School in Barcelona awards private and foreign degrees, whereas Universidad Europea awards official Spanish ones.

Programmes and language of instruction

A bachelor's degree (grado) lasts four years; medicine takes six years and 360 ECTS credits, dentistry five. Many subjects run in two versions, Spanish and English, and the English group carries a higher credit price.

Area English-taught programmes in Madrid
Business and economics BBA, Global BBA, Business Analytics, Economics, Marketing, Global International Business
Engineering and IT Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity, Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Systems Engineering, Mathematical Engineering in Data Science
Health Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Biomedicine, Biotechnology
Architecture and design Fundamentals of Architecture, Design, Interior Design, Animation, Videogames
Sport Physical Activity and Sports Sciences, Global Sport Management
Medicine No English group; Spanish only

Students who need to strengthen their academic base or language first can take a preparatory year: Foundation Year in Business and Marketing, or the Health Science Foundation Year for dentistry and physiotherapy. These are university certificate programmes, not official Spanish degrees, and they lead into the bachelor's programme.

Master's programmes mostly last one year. In Madrid the English-taught options include the MBA, Business Analytics, Big Data Analytics, International Business, Finance Management, Digital Marketing, Logistics and Project Management. For a wider view of the country's graduate options, see master's degrees in Spain.

How to apply for a bachelor's degree

The procedure is the same for nearly every programme except medicine and dentistry:

  1. Apply through an admissions adviser or the online form and pay the $170 (€150) test fee.
  2. Take the online competency and language test, followed by an interview.
  3. The decision appears in the applicant portal (Portal del pre-estudiante).
  4. Pay the place reservation by the deadline in the decision letter. It is short: for the 2026/27 medicine rounds there was about a week between the decision and the last payment day.
  5. Enrol: pay the $910 (€800) registration-file fee, sign the contract and submit your school documents.

The university looks at grades from the last completed school years. Language is checked during selection: English for the English group, Spanish for the Spanish one.

Medicine and dentistry: separate selection

For the 2026/27 intake medicine had eight test dates between 12 November 2025 and 2 July 2026, with five decision rounds. The final score was 90% the average grade of the year equivalent to the first year of Spanish Bachillerato (foreign grades are converted to the Spanish scale at the applicant's expense) and 10% an English test that everyone sits, certificates or not. Applicants whose first language is not Spanish also take a Spanish test, and anyone below B2 is excluded. Only applicants from a science or health-science school track are considered. The medicine place reservation is $4,090 (€3,600), or $5,000 (€4,400) together with the registration file, and it is non-refundable. The rules for the 2027/28 intake are published in a separate admissions document, which is the reference for dates.

Dentistry selection weights academic record at 80% and the test plus a motivational interview at 20%. UEM teaches dentistry in Madrid, Valencia and Málaga; Alicante opens an intake in September 2027.

Documents for school-leavers from Russia, Kazakhstan and other CIS countries

The school certificate and transcripts need an apostille and a Spanish translation. Russia and Kazakhstan are not among the education systems that use UNEDasiss accreditation, so legal access to a Spanish university requires homologation of the school certificate by the Spanish Ministry of Education. You can start your studies with the volante, the receipt confirming that the homologation request has been filed. If the access document is missing at enrolment, UEM gives 30 calendar days from the start of classes; until then enrolment is conditional. The full procedure is described in Spanish university admission after 11 years of school.

Fees for 2026/27

UEM charges per credit: the credit price multiplied by the credits taken, usually 60 a year. The table adds the first-year tuition, place reservation, registration file and test fee, using the 2026/27 Madrid fee schedule for new students.

Programme, Madrid Credit price First-year tuition Reservation First year with charges
Business Administration (English) $266 (€234) $15,940 (€14,040) $1,530 (€1,350) $18,550 (€16,340)
Administración y Dirección de Empresas (Spanish) $204 (€180) $12,260 (€10,800) $1,530 (€1,350) $14,880 (€13,100)
Global BBA (English) $304 (€268) $18,260 (€16,080) $1,530 (€1,350) $20,870 (€18,380)
Computer Engineering (English) $253 (€223) $15,190 (€13,380) $1,530 (€1,350) $17,800 (€15,680)
Psychology (English) $237 (€209) $14,240 (€12,540) $2,950 (€2,600) $18,270 (€16,090)
Dentistry (English) $456 (€402) $27,390 (€24,120) $2,950 (€2,600) $31,420 (€27,670)
Medicine (Spanish) $407 (€358) $24,390 (€21,480) $4,090 (€3,600) $29,560 (€26,030)

Tuition can be split into 10 or 12 monthly payments. The reservation and the registration file are paid once, on admission. From the second year only the credit fees remain, but the university may revise the credit price every year.

Master's fees in Madrid for 2026: the English-taught MBA costs $19,640 (€17,300) including the reservation, Business Analytics $16,580 (€14,600), International Business $16,120 (€14,200) and Big Data Analytics $15,440 (€13,600). The Master in Architecture, which qualifies graduates for the regulated profession in Spain, costs $16,690 (€14,700).

Scholarships and discounts

UEM's own aid includes a $3,410 (€3,000) award for new students with strong grades, a tuition discount of up to 50% under the study scholarship plan for high achievers, and seasonal discounts on the place reservation. The university decides who receives aid and how much under its own rules, and the conditions and windows change every year, so read the scholarship page before you apply. For 2026/27 medicine also had dedicated awards: one or two 50% awards in each round and one 70% award in July. Other options in the country are collected in scholarships in Spain.

Housing and living costs

The Villaviciosa de Odón campus has residence halls for more than 500 students. Rooms are booked directly with the residence operators, and the university does not publish their prices. Many students rent a room in nearby towns or in Madrid and reach the campus by suburban bus, the university shuttle or the carpooling platform the university runs. Search tips and price levels by city are in student housing in Spain.

For a student visa, the Spanish consulate asks for proof of at least 100% of IPREM for every month of study: $680 (€600) a month, or $8,180 (€7,200) for a year. That is the visa threshold, not a realistic budget; full living costs are in the cost of studying in Spain.

Student visa

A non-EU student needs a national study visa. Under the rules of the Consulate General of Spain in Moscow, applicants file at the BLS visa centres of their consular district no later than two months before classes begin. Besides the admission letter, the file includes proof of funds based on IPREM, health insurance meeting Spanish requirements and, for stays over 180 days, a legalised criminal record certificate (an apostille for Russian documents). Citizens of Kazakhstan follow the instructions of the Spanish Embassy in Astana. The consulate decides on the visa, not the university. Step-by-step guidance is in the Spanish student visa guide, and legal ways to pay a Spanish university from Russia are covered in how to pay for studies abroad from Russia.

Common mistakes

  • Counting on medicine in English. In Madrid UEM teaches medicine only in Spanish, and without B2 on the university's own test you are out of the competition.
  • Comparing only the credit price. The reservation and registration file add $2,440 to $5,000 to the first year.
  • Waiting until summer. Places in sought-after English programmes are allocated from the autumn.
  • Forgetting homologation. Without the volante enrolment stays conditional, and without legal access the university may cancel it.
  • Treating the reservation as a tuition prepayment. It is not refunded if you give up the place.

FAQ

Can I study at Universidad Europea de Madrid without Spanish?

Yes, if you choose an English-taught group: BBA, Computer Engineering, Psychology, Dentistry and several other programmes are fully in English. The internal test checks your English level. Medicine is the exception, because it requires Spanish at B2.

How much does Universidad Europea cost per year?

First-year bachelor's tuition in Madrid in 2026/27 ranges from $7,090 (€6,240) for the Spanish-taught primary teacher education degree to $27,390 (€24,120) for English-taught dentistry. In the first year you also pay the place reservation, the $910 (€800) registration file and the $170 (€150) test.

Do I need the Spanish PAU or PCE exams?

No. UEM selects through its own test, interview and school grades. You still need legal access to the Spanish university system, which for a school-leaver from Russia or Kazakhstan means homologation of the certificate or the volante showing the request has been filed.

Is a UEM degree an official Spanish degree?

Grado and máster universitario programmes lead to official Spanish degrees awarded by the university itself. Foundation years and programmes labelled "título propio" are the university's own certificates, not official degrees.

When should I apply?

For most programmes admission runs from the autumn until places are filled. For medicine in the 2026/27 intake the first test date was 12 November and the last 2 July. The 2027/28 dates are set out in the medicine admissions rules.

Does Universidad Europea have a campus in Málaga?

Yes, the network's Andalusian branch is called Universidad Europea de Andalucía. Do not confuse it with the public University of Málaga: fees, admission rules and status (private versus public) are all different.

How does StudyU help with UEM applications?

Choosing the programme and language group, preparing for the test and interview, checking documents, homologation and the visa file are provided under an agreement with StudyU. Admission is decided by UEM's admissions office, homologation by the Spanish Ministry of Education, and the visa by the Spanish consulate.
