Piri Reis University

Piri Reis University is a specialist private university in Tuzla on Istanbul's Asian side, established in 2008 with close links to the maritime sector. It describes itself as Turkey's first and only maritime-focused university and connects its teaching to shipping, ports, shipbuilding and marine technology.

The main reason to consider Piri Reis is industry concentration rather than catalogue size. Bachelor's options include Marine Engineering, Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Computer, Electrical and Electronics, Industrial and Mechanical Engineering. Business-related routes include Economics and Finance, International Trade and Business, Logistics Management, Maritime Business Management and Management Information Systems.

Associate degrees cover seagoing and shore-based maritime skills, Underwater Technology, Computer Programming, Logistics and Mechatronics. Law is Turkish-medium and follows a separate language route.

For 2026-2027, Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering and Marine Engineering cost $16,500 per year. Other bachelor's programs, including engineering, business and Law, cost $16,000. Associate programs are $10,500.

An automatic entry award is linked to qualifying GPA: 25% for a GPA of 65%-80%, and 50% for a GPA of at least 80%. A $16,000 degree therefore becomes $12,000 or $8,000; the two maritime engineering programs become $12,375 or $8,250; associate study becomes $7,875 or $5,250.

Piri Reis University is demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility by opening an eco-friendly Green Campus in Tuzla on the Marmara Sea coast. The campus, located on a 30-acre site with approximately 60,000 m² of indoor teaching space, opened in November 2013. In addition to emphasizing the environment, the university actively supports the development of various sports. Sports activities at the university are aimed at developing students' skills and abilities, providing quality recreational opportunities and promoting physical health. Examples of sports teams include basketball, volleyball, soccer, swimming, water polo and karate.

Applications are submitted online with a passport, diploma or expected-graduation letter, transcript and any supporting results. After evaluation, admitted students receive the documentation required for visa and final registration, followed by diploma equivalency and residence-permit steps.

For fall 2026-2027, international application, evaluation and final registration run from 1 June to 1 September 2026. English is demonstrated through an accepted certificate or university examination; otherwise a preparatory year may apply.

Different maritime careers

Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering prepares deck officers and includes sea training. Marine Engineering focuses on propulsion and ship machinery. Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering is primarily concerned with vessel design and construction ashore. The working environment and medical requirements are not the same.

Before paying a deposit, investigate eyesight, colour-vision, hearing and other fitness standards for the intended qualification. Ask which certificates are included, how sea training is organised and whether additional documents create extra costs.

Shore-based alternatives

Applicants who do not want a life at sea can consider Naval Architecture, Computer Engineering, Logistics, Maritime Business or Management Information Systems. These retain an industry connection while leading to a different working pattern.

Understanding the GPA award

The published 25% and 50% entry awards are easy to model, but applicants still need the correct GPA conversion and an offer stating the amount payable. Include tax and any English preparatory year in the final budget.
