University of New York in Prague (UNYP): US and European Bachelor's Degrees, 2026/27 Fees and Who Can Enrol

📍 the Czech Republic

The University of New York in Prague (UNYP) is a private higher education institution founded in 1998 and registered under the Czech Higher Education Act. All teaching is in English. Its American degrees are awarded by SUNY Empire State University, a public institution in the State University of New York system, while its European bachelor's (Bc.) is awarded by UNYP under Czech accreditation; a dual-degree option combines the two. For students from outside the EU, a bachelor's year costs $13,810–14,370 (CZK 299,000–311,000) in 2026/27. One rule shapes who can actually come: Czech embassies currently refuse study visa and residence applications from Russian and Belarusian citizens, so UNYP is realistic mainly for applicants from Kazakhstan and other countries, or for people already living legally in Czechia.

Russian citizens New study visa and residence applications are not accepted at Czech embassies (Government Regulation No. 55/2024)

Start with the visa: who can realistically enrol now

Czech Government Regulation No. 55/2024 makes applications for residence authorisation filed by Russian and Belarusian citizens at Czech embassies and consulates inadmissible. The Czech embassy in Moscow states on its long-stay visa page (updated 17 December 2025) that such applications from Russian and Belarusian citizens are not being accepted. The rule applies at every Czech embassy, not only in Moscow, and according to the regulation's text it covers Russian and Belarusian citizens even if they hold another citizenship. There is no exception for admitted students.

Your situation What it means for UNYP
Russian or Belarusian citizen living outside Czechia You may be admitted, but you cannot currently obtain a study visa or residence permit through an embassy. Do not pay tuition while the rule applies
Belarusian citizen with an MŠMT, EU or Czech government scholarship Covered by the regulation's exceptions
Russian citizen already living in Czechia on a residence permit The regulation covers embassy applications only; extensions or a change of purpose filed inside Czechia are handled by the Interior Ministry under the general rules. This opens no route for first entry
Kazakh citizen Standard procedure through the Czech embassy in Astana
Citizens of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and other countries Standard procedure through the embassy responsible for your country

The regulation, its exceptions and the Astana and Tashkent procedures are covered in our guide to the Czech student visa and residence permit. Russian citizens choosing a country now may find study abroad options for Russian citizens more useful.

Who UNYP suits

Strengths Limitations
A US degree without moving to the United States, plus a European Bc. in one programme Russian citizens cannot currently get a study visa
Fully English-taught in central Prague Fees are several times those of English-taught programmes at Czech public universities
Small classes and an interview with the dean instead of entrance exams No university-owned housing
Merit discounts of up to 50% on UNYP credits Discounts do not apply to SUNY credits, which are billed in dollars
A representative office in Almaty for applicants from Kazakhstan The European degree requires recognition (nostrification) of your school certificate

UNYP fits students who want business, psychology, international relations or media in English and see a US degree as a step towards graduate school in the United States or an international career. If budget comes first, compare it with public options in English-taught degrees in Czechia and our overview of universities in Prague. Everything else about the country is on our Czech Republic study hub.

UNYP, NYU and SUNY are three different things

  • UNYP is not a branch of New York University. NYU runs its own academic centre, NYU Prague, where NYU's own students spend a semester; it does not admit outside applicants to full degrees.
  • SUNY Empire State University is not NYU either. It is a public university within the State University of New York system, and it is the institution that awards UNYP graduates their US degree.
  • UNYP and Anglo-American University are two separate private universities in Prague with English-taught programmes, different fees and different degrees.

The degrees UNYP offers

Option Length Awarding institution Key points
American bachelor's 4 years SUNY Empire State University 92 UNYP credits and 32 SUNY credits; SUNY credits are billed separately in dollars
European bachelor's (Bc.) 3 years, 180 ECTS UNYP, Czech accreditation Nostrification of the school certificate required
Dual degree 4 years SUNY Empire State University and UNYP Two separate diplomas; 4 extra UNYP credits and the Czech state examination for the Bc.

The dual degree is offered in Business Administration, Psychology, Communication and Media, and International Relations. The US degree carries the standing of a degree from an accredited American institution, the Bc. that of a Czech degree within the European Higher Education Area. How either is recognised for work or further study in a particular country is decided by that country's authority or by the receiving university.

At master's level UNYP offers an MBA (accredited by IACBE and the Czech association CAMBAS), a Master's in Psychology within the Czech system plus a Master's in Digital Marketing and Analytics and a Master's in Business Analytics (CZK 350,000 per programme) run with Dublin Business School, whose degrees are awarded under the Irish institution's framework.

Bachelor's admission

UNYP requires secondary education recognised as equivalent to the Czech maturita. For its Czech-accredited programmes (Psychology, Communication and Media, International Relations, and Business Administration/BBA) your certificate must also be formally recognised in Czechia. UNYP runs a simplified internal nostrification process and can advise on the standard one; see our guide to nostrification in Czechia.

The application includes: - the application form and a non-refundable fee of $90 (CZK 2,000) - a certified copy of the school certificate (it can follow by September if not yet issued) and transcripts - a personal statement and one recommendation letter - a passport copy - proof of English - certified English translations of documents issued in other languages

Every applicant has a 30-minute online interview with the dean of the chosen programme about goals, readiness and expectations. There is no entrance exam, though a maths placement test may be used for course placement and scholarship decisions. Decisions usually arrive within one to two weeks after the interview, and conditional admission is possible while final documents are pending. UNYP's admissions committee decides.

English requirements and the Foundation programme

Level IELTS Academic TOEFL iBT Duolingo PTE Academic
Bachelor's 6.0 72 105 50
MBA and Master's in Psychology 6.5 79 110 53

Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency at grades A–C is also accepted for master's programmes, and the Master's in Digital Marketing and Analytics asks for B2+. Without a certificate you can take UNYP's own English test.

Applicants who meet the academic requirements but need more English can be placed in the two-level English Foundation Program (ESL Level 1 and Level 2). The guide band for conditional admission with Foundation is 49–69 on the UNYP test; at Level 2 you may also take a few introductory degree courses.

Tuition and fees for 2026/27

UNYP sets fees in Czech crowns; the euro and dollar figures on its website are estimates at November 2025 rates. These prices apply from autumn 2026.

Item Non-EU students
American bachelor's, standard year (30 credits plus student body fee) $14,370 (CZK 311,000)
European bachelor's, standard year (60 ECTS plus fee) $13,810 (CZK 299,000)
UNYP credit: American / European programme $460 (CZK 9,900) / $220 (CZK 4,750)
SUNY Empire State University credit $355

SUNY admissions fee (after year two) / technology fee (from year three) $365 once / $194 per semester
Graduation fee $160 (CZK 3,500)
MBA, Master's in Psychology, whole programme $18,940 (CZK 410,000)
Master's in Digital Marketing and Analytics, whole programme $16,170 (CZK 350,000)

At 2026/27 rates and before discounts, the full American bachelor's comes to about $57,400 (92 UNYP credits, 32 SUNY credits and eight semesters of fees) and the European bachelor's to about $41,690 over three years. Rates may change for the following academic year. For lawful payment routes from Russia, see how to pay for studies abroad from Russia; for national comparisons, the cost of studying in Czechia.

Scholarships and discounts

Every scholarship and discount must be applied for and approved before you start. They reduce only the UNYP credit charges; SUNY Empire State University courses are excluded. For scholarship purposes only your first exam attempt counts.

Bachelor's discount English Maths
50% UNYP test 100+, TOEFL iBT 100 or IELTS 8 UNYP test 93+ or SAT Math and English 700+
30% UNYP test 92+, TOEFL iBT 92 or IELTS 7 UNYP test 88+ or SAT 650+
15% UNYP test 84+, TOEFL iBT 84, IELTS 6.5 or B2 First grade A UNYP test 80+ or SAT 600+

Other options include a 10–20% sports award for national-team athletes and top-three national finishers, and a 5% early-payment discount if you pay a $2,770 (CZK 60,000) deposit and settle in full by 30 June for autumn or 31 October for spring. Master's awards depend on GMAT or GRE scores and management experience and range from $1,390 to $5,540 (CZK 30,000–120,000). The university decides every award.

Housing

UNYP has no halls of its own; it advises students and recommends places other students have used. The closest is Belgická Apartments, a five-minute walk from the main building, with new students applying through UNYP's international office. Others include Bro-coli (Prague 8), The Fizz (Prague 7), Student House Botič (Prague 10) and DC Rezidence (Prague 4). Prices come from the providers, not the university. Your visa file needs a housing confirmation with the landlord's notarised signature, so book as soon as you are admitted.

Visa for Kazakh and other non-EU applicants

Study stays longer than 90 days require a long-stay visa or a long-term residence permit for study. You apply in person at a Czech embassy; the Czech Interior Ministry decides within 60 days and charges $120 (CZK 2,500). You must show $5,350 (CZK 115,810) for a year of study, and every document except the passport must be less than 180 days old. UNYP issues admission and housing confirmations for recommended accommodation but has no role in the decision: all visa and residence decisions belong to the Czech authorities.

In Kazakhstan the Czech institution, not the student, books the appointment by sending your details to the embassy in Astana, and a "Student Mode" fast track with a limited monthly quota for Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan works through university nominations. The full checklist is in our guides to the Czech student visa and residence permit and to studying in Czechia for Kazakh students.

Common mistakes

  • Paying tuition before checking the visa rules for your citizenship. For Russian and Belarusian citizens without a qualifying scholarship this is the main trap.
  • Confusing UNYP with NYU Prague. UNYP graduates receive their US degree from SUNY Empire State University, not New York University.
  • Expecting a 50% award to halve the whole bill. It applies to UNYP credits only; the 32 SUNY credits in the American programme are paid separately.
  • Leaving nostrification late. It is compulsory for the European Bc. and the dual degree and takes several weeks.
  • Sitting IELTS as a practice run. Only the first attempt counts for scholarships.

FAQ

Can a Russian citizen study at UNYP now?

The university can admit you, but a Russian citizen cannot currently obtain a Czech study visa or residence permit at an embassy, because Regulation No. 55/2024 makes such applications inadmissible. Visa and residence decisions belong to the Czech authorities, and the university cannot influence them.

Are UNYP and New York University the same institution?

No. UNYP is a private Czech institution whose graduates receive their US degree from SUNY Empire State University, part of the State University of New York. NYU Prague is New York University's study-away centre for its own students.

How much does the University of New York in Prague cost?

In 2026/27 non-EU students pay CZK 311,000 ($14,370) for a standard year of the American bachelor's and CZK 299,000 ($13,810) for the European one. The MBA and the Master's in Psychology cost CZK 410,000 for the whole programme.

Do I need nostrification for UNYP?

Yes for the Czech-accredited programmes: Psychology, Communication and Media, International Relations and Business Administration/BBA. UNYP offers a simplified internal procedure, but plan for it early, as you cannot enrol in the European Bc. without it.

Can I earn two degrees at UNYP?

Yes, in Business Administration, Psychology, Communication and Media, and International Relations. Graduates who meet both sets of requirements and pass the Czech state examination receive a US degree from SUNY Empire State University and a Czech Bc. from UNYP.

How do I apply to UNYP from Kazakhstan?

Submit the online application with your school certificate, English result and recommendation, complete the interview with the dean and receive your offer. UNYP then registers you with the Czech embassy in Astana, and the Czech Interior Ministry decides on the visa.
