Czechia: compare a paid programme with study in Czech

This comparison uses the published 2026 tariff for a specific English-taught Charles University programme. It is not a minimum price for the whole university or country.
| Scenario | USD |
|---|---|
| Charles University: Liberal Arts and Humanities, English bachelor’s, annual | $5,800 |
| Living: 12 months using Study in Czechia guidance | $6,900–$11,100 |
The living guide mainly assumes a dormitory or shared accommodation. Prague, Brno and a private flat can cost more; compare the tenancy, utilities and full accommodation period.
Tuition on the named programme plus 12 months of living is about $12,700–$16,900. Check application charges, qualification recognition, insurance, visa fees, moving costs and other missing categories separately.
Admission, language and possible additional charges need separate checks. Include language preparation and the extra year of living in comparisons; completing a course does not establish B2 or admission.
If your budget is limited
Compare Czech-taught and paid English-taught routes over their full duration. Preparation saves money only when the language and timetable are realistic. Consider a smaller city and dormitory; confirm visa-application eligibility first.
What to prepare next
Prepare your school certificate and grades, nationality and residence status, current language level and preparation budget. These help compare direct application with an additional study year.
Rounded amounts are shown in US dollars for comparison, using ECB reference rates from 2026. The programme and its provider’s terms determine the final fee. Count housing and other categories once. Check what the university calculation includes; add only missing expenses and StudyU fees separately. A deposit can require funds before studies start. Do not add proof of funds again to expenses those same funds cover.

How admission works
Admission is based on your diploma (with recognition) and proven language: Czech (for free programs) or English. Some fields have entrance exams.
We'll help with diploma recognition, language prep, documents and the application.
Step by step:
- Passport check first. Confirm that you can apply with your nationality: Czech missions restrict applications from Russian and Belarusian citizens, as the FAQ below explains with the exceptions.
- Choose the language. A Czech-taught degree at a public institution can be tuition-free, while an English-taught one is charged at the university's rate; the choice also changes preparation time and the overall budget.
- Nostrification. Certificate recognition with possible subject exams - start months ahead.
- Entrance exams. The faculty sets assessments and application dates. Check the calendar for your intake; schedules vary between programmes.
- Language year. The programme sets its language threshold and accepted tests. Preparation length depends on your starting level and workload; a one-year course does not guarantee the required result. For an English-taught degree, also check the language of placements and practical study tasks.
After 11th grade: qualification assessment
After 11 school years, the university assesses the completed secondary qualification, recognition, language and subject requirements. Additional exams may apply. Recognition confirms the education level; it does not replace selection or guarantee admission. Language preparation may be needed separately. More: study-abroad guide.
Master's degrees in Czechia
Master’s admission requires separate assessment of the recognised degree, relevant subjects, grades and language. Faculty conditions may apply. Compare the whole programme cost and prior-education requirements, rather than the degree title alone. English-taught programmes have their own tariffs.
What studying in Czechia costs
Compare the same study and accommodation period. Calculate preparation and extra semesters separately; do not add housing or proof of funds a second time to expenses already covered. StudyU services are accounted for under the agreement.
FAQ
Czech-taught degrees at public and state institutions can be tuition-free regardless of nationality. Academic and language requirements still apply; preparation, living and possible additional charges are separate. English-taught programmes have their own tariffs.
A Czech-taught degree requires the university’s specified Czech level. An English-taught programme assesses English under faculty rules; Czech remains useful for daily life and placements. Preparation length depends on your starting level.
Nostrification is recognition of a foreign qualification; the applicable procedure can depend on the document and university. Supplementary subject exams may apply. Confirm the route and timing early; recognition does not itself grant a university place.
The official guide assuming a dormitory or shared accommodation is $6,900–$11,100 for 12 months. It is not a spending ceiling: Prague, Brno and a private flat can cost more. Check utilities, the deposit and tenancy length.
Since 1 April 2024, under Czech Government Regulation No. 55/2024 Coll., Czech embassies and consulates do not accept long-term visa or residence permit applications, including for study, from Russian or Belarusian citizens, even if they also hold another citizenship. The exceptions are narrow: certain family grounds, study applications by Belarusian citizens and cases in the Czech national interest. Extending an existing permit from within Czechia follows the general rules of the Foreign Nationals Act. Before paying for a course, check your ground with the Czech MFA and the responsible consulate.
The 2026 English-taught Liberal Arts and Humanities example at Charles University is about $5,800 a year. Adding the $6,900–$11,100 guide for 12 months of living gives $12,700–$16,900 before extra costs. This is one programme, not a range for all English-taught study.
