🇲🇹 Studying in Malta for international applicants
English-speaking, Mediterranean island
Malta is an English-speaking Mediterranean island and a convenient EU destination.
Advantages of studying
- English-taught in the EU.
- Warm climate.
- A compact, safe environment.
How local universities work
British model, instruction in English.
Tuition costs
The 2026/27 example is the Bachelor of European Studies and International Relations at the University of Malta: about $9,800 per academic year for non-EU applicants. It is a three-year full-time programme, not a price for every bachelor’s degree or language course.
UM’s listed expenses with shared accommodation add up to about $18,800–$22,600 for 12 months. They include housing, food excluding restaurants, connectivity, laundry, basic utilities and other everyday categories. The source’s free public transport applies to e-residence permit holders; check costs before that status separately.
A year of this programme plus those 12 months of living gives $28,600–$32,400. This is a guide, not a complete invoice: check insurance, flights, visa charges, deposits and study materials separately. Visa-funds evidence is not the same as a realistic living budget and must not be added twice.
For a lower budget, compare shared housing using the full tenancy and journey to campus. Foundation or language study has its own fee and duration and does not replace assessment of a school qualification. Price master’s and professional programmes separately; count scholarships after a written award.

How StudyU supports your application
Under an agreement with StudyU, we show tuition, requirements and timing before the application and build the route around your chosen country, university and programme. The university decides admission, and the competent authority decides the visa or residence permit.
Visa and residence
After admission, check the visa and residence route for your nationality, status and programme duration. Confirm documents, funding, insurance, timing and charges with the competent authority and institution. An offer does not guarantee permission or an issue date. Work rights and any graduate route require separate eligibility checks and applications; future income should not finance essential study costs.
Student life and budget
English is widely used in Malta, but confirm the language of teaching and placements. Housing, utilities and transport deserve a current quote; a shared flat may reduce costs, while location and season can raise them. The island’s size does not establish a short journey to campus.
Recognition and what comes next
Participation in the European higher-education system does not establish recognition for every purpose. The receiving university assesses further study and credit transfer; a competent body decides access to a regulated profession. Check the programme and destination country. Check the actual programme intake and application calendar. Under an agreement with StudyU, support can include a program shortlist, dossier preparation, applications, and preparation of visa and housing requests. Universities decide offers, authorities decide visas, and each residence or housing provider confirms availability and final terms.
Clarify these before you apply
Who confirms first-year housing availability and what the price includes? Which English level does my exact program require - and is the internal test accepted instead of IELTS? Are early-deposit discounts available? What is the refund policy on visa refusal? Written answers to these four questions save months of email - our students have them before any payment.
Bottom line
Malta may suit students seeking English-taught study in a compact Mediterranean setting, provided the course, entry conditions and full housing budget fit. A programme shortlist and personalised budget are prepared under an agreement with StudyU.

How to apply to Malta
Check the programme’s teaching language, subject requirements and accepted English evidence. A language module does not automatically cure a missing academic qualification or guarantee admission.
Admission after school and master's
The institution assesses your exact school qualification, subjects, grades and language. For an 11-year certificate, confirm equivalence and programme eligibility before paying. Exams or preparation may be required; a language course alone does not establish academic eligibility or admission. Master’s admission assesses the previous degree, relevant subjects, grades and language; programme-specific conditions may apply. Compare the whole duration, annual versus full-course fees and recognition for the intended further study or profession. More: study-abroad guide.
