How education works here

The Bologna system; programs in Portuguese and English.

Tuition and fees

Instead of a national price band, compare two U.Porto tariffs for 2026/27. International full-time undergraduate study at the Faculty of Sciences is about $4,400 annually; Health Informatics is about $5,200 per academic year for the international category. The latter programme lasts four semesters. Nationality, status and faculty can change the fee category.

Living evidence is limited: U.Porto’s 2024 guide lists housing, meals and transport that annualise to $8,700–$15,000 over 12 months. This is a historical partial calculation, not a current rental quote or a complete 2026 budget. Connectivity, utilities, insurance, visa steps, moving and deposits need separate checks.

Insert a current tenancy quote and all missing categories before comparing the cost with your family limit. Do not treat the old upper figure as a ceiling for Lisbon or Porto. An international tariff cannot be replaced with a domestic or reduced category without confirmed eligibility.

For a smaller budget, compare public universities and polytechnics, locations and programme language. Portuguese-taught study may widen the options, but preparation adds time and cost. Private, clinical and individual English-taught programmes set their own fees; a master’s tariff cannot be inferred from undergraduate tuition.

How StudyU supports your application

Under an agreement with StudyU, we show tuition, requirements and timing before the application and build the route around your chosen country, university and programme. The university decides admission, and the competent authority decides the visa or residence permit.

Visa and residence

After admission, check the visa and residence route for your nationality, status and programme duration. Confirm documents, funding, insurance, timing and charges with the competent authority and institution. An offer does not guarantee permission or an issue date.

Cities and budget

Compare Lisbon, Porto and other university towns using current housing offers and the journey to campus. Location, tenancy length and bills determine the cost; smaller cities are not automatically cheaper for every student. Portuguese can help in daily life and work, but course availability and price need checking.

How admission works and what comes next

Institutions set their international application rounds and assess school qualifications, subject exams and language. Master’s entry requires a relevant previous degree. Compare the exact programme and teaching language; neither Bologna participation nor a degree title grants automatic access to further study or a regulated profession.

Questions to ask before applying

Does my program run an English track, or is Portuguese B1/B2 required? Is there an internal entrance exam and when? Which certificate-recognition route does the university accept? Are decisions rolling or fixed-date? These answers define your half-year calendar - we collect them before building the dossier.

In short

Portugal can suit students whose programme language, entry requirements and current living budget align. Compare universities and polytechnics by course content and professional requirements. Selection of agreed programme options for your language level and GPA is provided under an agreement with StudyU.

How to apply to Portugal

Internationals are admitted on certificate competition plus university internal exams (often replaced by an interview or subject grades). Programs run in Portuguese and English; Lisbon and Porto universities hold European rankings.

Admission after school and master's

The institution assesses your exact school qualification, subjects, grades and language. For an 11-year certificate, confirm equivalence and programme eligibility before paying. Exams or preparation may be required; a language course alone does not establish academic eligibility or admission. Master’s admission assesses the previous degree, relevant subjects, grades and language; programme-specific conditions may apply. Compare the whole duration, annual versus full-course fees and recognition for the intended further study or profession. More: study-abroad guide.
