Higher education in Greece at a glance

Greece is an affordable Mediterranean destination in the EU, appealing for its warm climate, rich history and relatively low cost of living. English-taught programs are available to international students, especially at private hospitality and business colleges.
Compare the awarding institution and programme, including any foreign-university partnership.

Greece: a named programme fee and a year of living
The English-taught example is NKUA’s four-year degree in the archaeology, history and literature of Ancient Greece. Its published standard tariff was checked in 2026. It cannot be transferred to Alpine Center, Medicine or every private college.
| Scenario | USD |
|---|---|
| NKUA: Archaeology, History and Literature of Ancient Greece, annual | $6,900 |
| European Commission living guide including housing, 12 months | $9,700–$16,600 |
The European Commission’s general guide includes housing, food, transport and personal expenses. In Athens, check the actual tenancy, utilities and seasonal terms; the range is not a spending ceiling.
One year on this programme plus 12 months of living is about $16,600–$23,500. Separate registration charges, insurance, immigration, travel and other missing categories are excluded. Plan the four-year degree over its full duration.
Greek-taught public study, an English-taught degree and a private college have different admission and fee conditions. Check any tuition exemption by nationality, status and programme. A language year adds course and living costs; for a master’s degree, confirm the full programme fee instead of applying an undergraduate tariff.
If your budget is limited
Compare an eligible Greek-taught route with English study over the full duration, including language preparation. For private hospitality study, verify the award, compulsory placement and associated costs. A room outside expensive districts may reduce spending if the campus commute remains practical.
What to prepare next
Specify the subject, language, school qualification and preparation budget. For a college, record the award and awarding university; for placements, check the season, location and payment terms.
Amounts are rounded and shown in US dollars using the ECB’s 2026 reference rate. The invoice and payment exchange rate may differ. Do not add housing or proof of funds again to costs already covered. Compare equal periods; StudyU services are accounted for under an agreement.

How admission works
The free initial consultation clarifies your goal, profile, timing and budget and identifies the next step. Selection of agreed options, requirement checks, document preparation and application support are provided under an agreement with StudyU. The university decides admission, the funding provider decides scholarships, the competent authority decides immigration permission, and the accommodation provider confirms housing.
Step by step:
- Pick your track. Public Greek-taught study, English degrees and private colleges have different admission and fee rules. Confirm any tuition exemption for your status instead of assuming a nominal tariff.
- Apply on documents. Pick the route first (the special public procedure, an English-taught degree or a private college) and prepare the documents it asks for; the 11th-grade section below covers eligibility.
- Language. The selected programme sets its teaching language, required level and accepted certificates. Preparation and degree entry can have different conditions. Check compulsory subjects and placements too; learning a language after arrival does not waive entry requirements.
- Visa and permit. Non-EU applicants generally need study immigration permission after admission. Check the consular list for funds, insurance and study documents; the authority decides the application.
Applying straight after 11th grade
Eligibility depends on the school qualification and route: the special public-sector procedure for foreign applicants, an English-taught degree and a private college have different conditions. The institution checks recognition, language and additional requirements. Confirm your specific 11-year certificate before paying for preparation; check the programme’s selection procedure separately. More: study-abroad guide.
Master's degrees in Greece
For master’s admission, the university separately assesses the degree, relevant subjects, grades and language. Duration and fees depend on the programme; an annual undergraduate tariff cannot be applied to a master’s degree. Holding a diploma does not automatically establish admission or a graduate job.
What studying in Greece costs
Compare matching periods of tuition and living. Account for preparation, vacations and additional semesters separately; do not add housing or proof of funds again to costs already covered. StudyU services are paid under an agreement.
FAQ
Above all hospitality and tourism - fitting for one of the world's most visited countries.
Yes. Examples include NKUA’s English-taught BA in the archaeology, history and literature of Ancient Greece, alongside private college programmes. Check the awarding institution, accreditation, entry language and full fee for the selected course.
Housing is a major variable: compare an actual tenancy, winter utilities, transport and any seasonal move before judging affordability. The Commission’s broad guide does not guarantee an Athens apartment at its lower end. Sharing a room can reduce spending, but deposits and moving costs still need a separate allowance.
The receiving institution assesses recognition for further study; a competent professional body assesses access to regulated practice. Check the specific award, accreditation, placement language and destination requirements; Bologna participation does not automatically confer all professional rights.
NKUA’s English-taught BA in the archaeology, history and literature of Ancient Greece is about $6,900 a year. Adding the Commission’s $9,700–$16,600 guide for 12 months of living gives $16,600–$23,500 before separate fees and moving costs. This is not an Alpine Center or other programme tariff.
Greek-taught programmes require the level and evidence set by the institution. English-taught degrees also exist, including NKUA’s Ancient Greece BA. Check placement language separately even on an English programme; a language year adds time and expense and does not guarantee degree entry.
For the same 12-month period, the published guide is about $9,700–$16,600 with housing already included. Check deposits, insurance, travel and missing personal costs separately. Sharing housing and choosing a practical district can change your actual budget.

How to decide if Greece is the right route
Greece works best when the student is choosing between European lifestyle, hospitality, tourism, business or a foundation-style transition into further study. Treat the country as a practical route, not only as a beautiful destination: language, recognition, application timing and the city matter as much as tuition.
StudyU usually compares Greece with Cyprus, Italy and Turkey for families who want a warmer climate and a European academic setting. The right answer depends on the student's language level, the family's budget for the first year and whether the chosen programme gives a clear next step after graduation.
