Modul University Vienna (MU) is a small private university on the Kahlenberg hill at the northern edge of Vienna. Every programme is taught in English and accredited by the Austrian agency AQ Austria, and MU appears on the Austrian science ministry's list of private universities. Its focus is narrow: tourism and hospitality, management, HR, data science, international relations and sustainability. Applicants with an 11-year school certificate from Russia, Belarus or Uzbekistan cannot enter the first year directly and start with a one-semester Foundation programme costing $10,170 (€9,000). Bachelor's tuition is $10,170 (€9,000) per semester, or $20,340 (€18,000) a year, at the rates in force since 1 January 2026.

Who Modul University Vienna suits
| Strengths | Limitations |
|---|---|
| A specialist profile in tourism and hospitality; MU reports a 51–100 band in the QS 2026 subject table for Hospitality and Leisure Management | A short programme list: no engineering, medicine, law or design |
| Fully English-taught; German is not required for admission | Tuition is roughly twelve times the non-EU fee at an Austrian public university |
| A small campus, an admissions interview and individual review of every file | The campus sits outside the city centre, around 40–50 minutes from many residences |
| A hotel-operations BBA with an optional New York extension semester | Students from several post-Soviet systems need an extra Foundation semester |
| Anniversary scholarships of up to 80% for the 2027/28 intake | Fees are indexed twice a year unless you prepay |
MU makes sense for students aiming at tourism, hotel management or international business who want to live in Vienna without learning German first. If budget is the main constraint, compare it with English-taught degrees at public institutions in our guide to English-taught degrees in Austria. Applicants more interested in international relations, psychology or communication with an American degree should also look at Webster Vienna Private University. For the wider picture, see universities in Vienna and our Austria study hub.
Legal status and the degree you receive
An Austrian private university is a fully accredited higher education institution, not a college or a branch campus. MU was first accredited in 2007; since then it has been re-accredited every six years, reports to AQ Austria annually and must have each new programme accredited separately. Because it is on the ministry's official list, its bachelor's and master's degrees are Austrian Bologna-system degrees with ECTS credits.
The university was founded by the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Today 90% belongs to the Hungarian company Univinvest and 10% to the Chamber. For students the practical consequence is simple: MU sets its own fees, and they are not regulated by the state.
Recognition outside Austria follows the rules of the country where you want to use the degree; the decision belongs to that country's recognition authority. If an employer or university abroad asks, keep the AQ Austria accreditation record for your programme to hand; the word "private" alone is not an obstacle to recognition.
Programmes
Foundation. Business or Tech, starting in September or February. It is the first semester for applicants who are conditionally admitted to a bachelor's programme; there is no separate application. MU also runs maths-only and no-English variants.
Bachelor's (6 semesters): - BSc Applied Data Science - BSc Human Resources Management - BSc International Management (marketing, entrepreneurship and business psychology specialisations); a variant with a mandatory 900-hour internship runs for 7 semesters - BA International Relations and Sustainability - BBA Tourism and Hospitality Management - BBA Tourism, Hotel Management and Operations (8 semesters)
Master's (4 semesters): MSc in Management, MSc International Tourism Management, MSc Sustainable Development, Management and Policy, MSc Data Science for Sustainability. The MBA lasts 3 semesters and needs at least three years in a responsible position. There is also a PhD in Business and Socioeconomic Sciences.
Entry routes after secondary school
MU publishes country-by-country rules. For Russia, Belarus and Uzbekistan it states that direct entry to a bachelor's programme requires completing the MU Foundation first; the 11-year Russian attestat is accepted as the basis for the Foundation, and mathematics must appear on the school certificate. Kazakhstan is not on the published list, so a Kazakh attestat is assessed individually and the outcome (direct entry or Foundation) comes with the admission decision.
How the process runs: 1. Apply online to the bachelor's programme you want, uploading your certificate or current grades, an English test result, a recommendation letter and evidence of extracurricular activity, all in English. 2. After an eligibility check you book an interview on Microsoft Teams, about 30 minutes for undergraduates and 45 for postgraduates, camera on. 3. The programme dean decides on the admissions coordinator's recommendation. A decision usually arrives within 10 days of the interview and is either full or conditional, for example with the Foundation semester. 4. You sign the study contract and pay the first instalment within 7 days of the offer. MU's visa team starts work only after this payment.
Students under 18 at enrolment need a guardian in Austria who is over 18 and legally resident there; the guardian signs a notarised letter accepting legal and financial responsibility.
English requirements
| Level | IELTS Academic | Other accepted tests |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's (B2) | 6.5, no band below 6.0, writing at least 6.0 | TOEFL iBT 4.5 on the new scale (writing 4.0), Cambridge B2 First grade B with 173, PTE Academic 59, Duolingo 125 (subscores 110) |
| Foundation only | 5.5, no band below 5.0 | TOEFL iBT 65, B2 First grade C, Duolingo 100 (subscores 85) |
| Master's (C1) | 7.0, no band below 6.5 | TOEFL iBT 95, Cambridge C1 Advanced grade C with 180 |
Results must be less than two years old. If you need a visa, MU will not issue even a conditional acceptance letter until your English is proven, and without that letter you cannot book the embassy appointment, so take the test before you apply. Our guide to applying to universities in Austria compares the tests.
Deadlines for visa-required applicants
| Step | Autumn intake (September) | Spring intake (February) |
|---|---|---|
| Super Early Bird ($2,260 (€2,000) off the academic year) | by 15 January | by 15 June |
| Early Bird ($1,130 (€1,000) off the academic year) | by 15 March | by 15 August |
| Final application deadline | 1 April | 1 September |
| Book the residence-permit appointment at the embassy | by 15 May | by 15 October |
MU sets these dates because visa and residence processing averages five to six months. Late applications are still reviewed but usually move to the next intake. Early-application discounts do not apply to the Foundation and cannot be combined with some grants; MU's reductions page describes the Early Bird differently: $2,260 (€2,000) a year for applications by 15 March (15 August for spring), provided admission is completed and the first instalment is paid by 1 April (1 September). Ask for the version that applies to you to be stated in your offer letter.
Tuition fees
Fees are per semester at the rates in force since 1 January 2026 and cover teaching and university services only.
| Programme | Per semester | Whole programme before indexation |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation Business / Tech | $10,170 (€9,000) | one semester |
| Most bachelor's programmes | $10,170 (€9,000) | $61,010 (€54,000) |
| BSc International Management with Professional Experience | $9,830 (€8,700) | $68,800 (€60,900) |
| BBA Tourism, Hotel Management and Operations | $10,170 (€9,000) | $81,350 (€72,000), 8 semesters |
| MSc in Management | $9,040 (€8,000) | $36,150 (€32,000) |
| Other MSc programmes | $7,910 (€7,000) | $31,630 (€28,000) |
| MBA | $12,430 (€11,000) | $37,280 (€33,000) |
Indexation: MU adjusts fees to inflation in January and June. Paying the whole programme upfront earns a 3% discount and freezes the rate; paying a full year earns 1.5% and freezes it for that year. A one-off administration fee for visa, permit and housing support is charged unless you return the signed contract and pay the first invoice within 15 days. Payments go by bank transfer, including through Flywire; if you are paying from Russia, our guide on how to pay for studies abroad from Russia covers lawful routes.
For context, an Austrian public university charges non-EU students $820 (€726.72) per semester plus the student union fee; see the cost of studying in Austria.
Scholarships and reductions
- 20th Anniversary Scholarship. Twenty awards for new students starting in 2027/28 on any bachelor's or MSc programme, worth 40%, 60% or 80% of tuition. A bachelor's student would then pay $6,100, $4,070 or $2,030 (€5,400, €3,600 or €1,800) per semester. You submit a three-minute video and a budget for study and living costs, and show financial need, extracurricular engagement and the potential to keep an 80% average. Applications are assessed monthly, with an interview before an admissions coordinator and two scholarship committee members.
- Supporting Futures Scholarship (bachelor's). Up to 25% of tuition based on academic results and the interview; MU's guide values are 15% for an average above 90%, 10% above 85% and 5% above 80%, with SAT scores also considered. It cannot be combined with other grants except the prepayment reductions.
- Graduate Excellence Scholarship for master's and MBA applicants.
- Sibling reduction of 10% when a brother or sister already studies at MU.
Places are limited and MU decides every award. For other funding sources, see scholarships in Austria.
Housing and a realistic annual budget
MU has no halls of its own. Once your first payment arrives, a housing coordinator sends a short survey and suggests options from providers the university works with, often with discount codes. You sign the lease directly with the provider, and that lease goes into your permit file.
| Provider | Monthly price quoted by MU | Commute to campus |
|---|---|---|
| The Social Hub | $680–900 (€600–800), all inclusive | 40–50 min |
| The Fizz | $790–1,020 (€700–900), all inclusive | about 45 min |
| Milestone | $900–1,130 (€800–1,000) before promo code | 40–50 min |
| STUWO | $450–680 (€400–600) | depends on the building |
| ÖJAB | $340–730 (€300–650) | depends on the building |
| WIHAST | $450–680 (€400–600), all inclusive | 35–40 min |
Getting there: U4 to Heiligenstadt, then bus 38A for 20–25 minutes to the Kahlenberg stop. The student semester ticket costs $80 (€75) for under-26s. You must register your address (Meldezettel) within three days of moving in; in Vienna the residence card is not handed over without it.
Example year for a bachelor's student under 24: tuition of $20,340 (€18,000) plus the permit minimum of $9,800 (€8,670.96). Rent above $440 (€386.43) a month raises the required amount; with a $680 (€600) room the account must show $12,690 (€11,233.80). In that case the year comes to about $33,030 (€29,233.80) before flights and personal spending.
The student residence permit
Studies longer than six months require the Residence Permit – Student (Aufenthaltsbewilligung – Student). First applications are filed in person at the Austrian embassy covering your country of residence: Moscow for Russian citizens living in Russia, Astana for Kazakhstan. The Vienna immigration office MA 35 decides, normally within 90 days of a complete file, longer if documents are requested. The fee is $250 (€218) and is not refunded after a refusal. After approval you have three months to obtain the D visa for entry, then collect the card in Vienna.
The file includes MU's German-language admission letter (Zulassung), your passport, birth certificate and police certificate with apostille and certified translation, a tenancy agreement, health insurance and proof of funds for 12 months: $820 (€722.58) a month under 24 and $1,480 (€1,308.39) from 24. MU helps with the form and the appointment but warns that in some regions waiting times reach 12–18 months and refusal rates are high. MU also keeps a list of countries with limited eligibility whose passport holders' applications it generally does not process. On 2 October 2026 that list was not shown on the page, and MU's country requirements describe the normal Foundation route for Russia; before paying, ask the admissions team to confirm in writing that it can process an application on your passport. Our guides to the Austrian student visa and residence permit and to studying in Austria as a Russian citizen give the full checklist.
Working during and after your studies
Non-EU students may work up to 20 hours a week with an employment permit (Beschäftigungsbewilligung) that the employer obtains from the AMS employment service. After graduation the permit can be extended by 12 months for job searching, and a job offer opens the Red-White-Red Card route. Details are in our guide to working while studying in Austria.
Common mistakes
- Planning on direct first-year entry with a Russian, Belarusian or Uzbek certificate. MU requires the Foundation, which adds a semester and $10,170.
- Leaving the English test until after applying. No certificate means no letter for the embassy and a missed 15 May booking window.
- Comparing MU with public universities on price alone. A private university charges for small classes, services and a fully English curriculum.
- Ignoring indexation. With semester-by-semester payment the rate can rise in January and again in June.
- Renting before checking the commute. The campus is on a hill, and your district decides how long you travel every day.
A timeline for autumn 2027
- October–December 2026: take IELTS or another accepted test, gather your certificate or current grades, decide whether to apply for the anniversary scholarship.
- By 15 January 2027: apply to reach the Super Early Bird date and complete the interview.
- Immediately after admission: contract, first payment, apostilles and translations, housing.
- By 15 May 2027: book and attend the embassy appointment for the residence permit.
- September 2027: Foundation; first bachelor's semester from February 2028.
FAQ
Can I enter a Modul bachelor's programme straight after an 11-year school certificate?
Not directly if your certificate is from Russia, Belarus or Uzbekistan. MU requires its one-semester Foundation first. You apply to the bachelor's programme, and the admissions committee decides whether a conditional offer with the Foundation is needed.
How much does Modul University Vienna cost?
From 1 January 2026 most bachelor's programmes cost €9,000 ($10,170) per semester, master's programmes €7,000–8,000 and the MBA €11,000. Housing and living costs are extra, and fees are indexed in January and June unless you prepay.
Is a degree from an Austrian private university recognised?
MU is accredited by AQ Austria and listed by the Austrian science ministry, so its degrees are Austrian bachelor's and master's degrees. Recognition in another country follows that country's rules, and its recognition authority makes the decision.
Do I need German?
Not for admission or study, since every programme is taught in English. German helps with part-time jobs, dealing with authorities and finding work in Austria after graduation, so many students take classes alongside their degree.
Where do Russian citizens apply for the permit to study at Modul?
In person at the Austrian embassy in Moscow if they live in Russia. The Vienna immigration office MA 35 decides, usually within 90 days; the university only issues the admission letter and helps with the file, so start straight after admission.
What scholarships does Modul University Vienna offer?
For the 2027/28 intake there are 20 anniversary awards of 40%, 60% or 80%, the Supporting Futures Scholarship of up to 25% for bachelor's students and the Graduate Excellence Scholarship for master's applicants. The university decides each award, and places are limited.
