How to apply

Admission depends on the chosen course, a recognised qualification and English-language evidence. If your qualification is not recognised for direct undergraduate entry, a preparation program may be an option. IELTS is one accepted way to show English proficiency; master's requirements vary by course.

How admission to University of Sydney works, step by step:

  1. Choose a program (9–12 months ahead). Decide on the field — arts, IT, medicine and business — and the level: bachelor’s or master’s. Programs differ in requirements, deadlines and fees.
  2. English-language evidence. Accepted evidence and any required test score depend on the course; IELTS is one option.
  3. Application. Applications are submitted online; once reviewed, the university sends an offer — with it you can plan finances and housing.
  4. Student visa and relocation. After the offer, StudyU helps prepare visa or residence-permit documents for Australia; the consular or migration authority makes the decision.

After 11 years of school. Check your qualification against the university's recognised qualifications and the chosen course's entry criteria; the number of school years alone does not decide eligibility. If direct entry is unavailable, a preparation program may be an option. Only selected articulation agreements specify diploma credit; other prior study is assessed case by case. Entry into year 2 or a shorter or cheaper route is not guaranteed.

Career after graduation

The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) may let eligible graduates live and work in Australia temporarily, subject to the applicable stream and a successful application. It does not guarantee permanent residency. Check the current government rules.

The strong fields of University of Sydney are arts, IT, medicine and business. As at most universities in Australia, students have access to a career centre, job fairs and internships — use them from the first semesters: hands-on experience is decisive for the first job.

An alternative track is further study: a bachelor’s degree earned in Australia opens master’s programs worldwide, and a master’s strengthens your position on the job market.
