🇸🇰 Studying in Slovakia for international applicants

Affordable Europe, medicine

Slovakia is an affordable European destination, including for medical fields.

Study in Slovakia: Bratislava Castle and the SNP Bridge

What makes it strong

  • Affordable Europe.
  • Medical programs.
  • Low cost of living.

How education works here

The Bologna system; there are programs in English, including medicine.

Slovakia: teaching language affects the budget

Slovak-taught study can offer tuition-free options. For a foreign-language programme, check the faculty tariff and budget separately for language preparation.

ScenarioUSD
Foreign-language programmes: European Commission annual guide$900–$12,700
Living: 12 months using the general guide$6,900–$9,700

The living range includes housing and represents a moderate student budget. Confirm a room and its actual price separately.

Adding the ends of these two guides gives $7,800–$22,400 for annual tuition and 12 months of living. This is a comparison range, not a faculty quote; medicine and individual programmes need their own calculation.

Medicine and other specialist courses can cost outside the general range. Tuition-free Slovak study depends on the study mode and duration.

If your budget is limited

Compare a fee-paying English programme with Slovak preparation followed by degree entry. Include living expenses throughout preparation in the second route.

What to prepare next

Include the language, intended faculty and prior education. For the initial enquiry, clarify whether an additional language-preparation period is feasible.

Rounded amounts are shown in US dollars for comparison, using ECB reference rates from 2026. The programme and its provider’s terms determine the final fee. Count housing and other categories once. Check what the university calculation includes; add only missing expenses and StudyU fees separately. A deposit can require funds before studies start. Do not add proof of funds again to expenses those same funds cover.

How StudyU supports your application

Under an agreement with StudyU, we help you choose between the Slovak-taught and English-taught tracks, check document and language requirements, and prepare the apostille, translations and application. The university decides admission, and the competent Slovak authority decides the residence permit.

Residence permit

Visa and study-residence requirements depend on nationality and status. After admission, check the consular list for documents, funds, insurance and application arrangements. Processing and any work rights follow current rules; admission does not guarantee a permit.

The free Slovak track vs English programs

Foreign-language and private programmes may charge tuition. A language year does not guarantee proficiency or admission. Bratislava and Košice offer different programmes; recognition for a regulated profession is checked in the destination country.

Cities, budget and honest warnings

Bratislava and Košice offer different housing, transport and programme choices. Check an actual dormitory or tenancy offer and the full rental period. A Slovak study permit does not automatically authorise work in another country; prospective earnings should not fund essential costs.

Questions to ask before applying

Which Slovak exam (B1/B2) opens the free track and on which dates? What does the preparatory year cost and does it include housing? For English tracks: decision timelines and scholarships? How does the university support the residence permit? These answers decide your track - we collect them in writing at the shortlist stage.

Who this destination fits

Slovakia may suit applicants ready to study in Slovak and compare public programmes. Whether preparation lowers the total cost depends on the starting language level, course length and admission requirements.

How to apply to Slovakia

  1. Language. Foreign-language and private programmes may charge tuition. The programme sets its language threshold and accepted tests. Preparation length depends on your starting level and workload; a one-year course does not guarantee the required result. For an English-taught degree, also check the language of placements and practical study tasks.
  2. Nostrification. Recognition of your school documents - start months ahead.
  3. Apply. Each faculty sets its deadline, assessment and document requirements for the intake.
  4. Residence permit. Check requirements for your nationality and residence status; admission does not guarantee the permit.

Admission with an 11-year school certificate and master's

Master’s admission requires separate assessment of the recognised degree, relevant subjects, grades and language. Faculty conditions may apply. Compare the whole programme cost and prior-education requirements, rather than the degree title alone. More: study-abroad guide.

What studying in Slovakia costs

Compare the same study and accommodation period. Calculate preparation and extra semesters separately; do not add housing or proof of funds a second time to expenses already covered. StudyU services are accounted for under the agreement.

Frequently asked questions

You need completed secondary education and recognition of the qualification in Slovakia. The faculty assesses subjects, grades and language and sets exams and deadlines. Confirm eligibility for your specific 11-year certificate before paying for preparation: recognition does not establish admission.

Full-time Slovak-taught study at a public or state institution within the standard duration is generally tuition-free, including for international students. Foreign-language and private programmes may charge tuition. Preparation, living and additional fees remain part of the budget.

Knowing another Slavic language can help, but academic Slovak still takes sustained preparation. Check your starting level, the programme’s accepted language evidence and the course workload. One year of classes does not guarantee admission-level proficiency.

The European Commission’s general living guide converts to about $6,900–$9,700 for 12 months, with housing included. A current Bratislava or Košice rental offer may differ; check utilities, deposits and availability rather than relying on the lowest estimate.
