Bulgaria: price the medical degree and preparation separately

MU-Sofia’s published 2026/27 admissions information provides examples for specific medical subjects. These are not minimum prices for every Bulgarian institution.

ScenarioUSD
MU-Sofia: Medicine in English or Bulgarian, annual$11,500
MU-Sofia: Pharmacy in English or Bulgarian, annual$9,200
MU-Sofia: Bulgarian preparatory year, separate$4,300
European Commission living guide with housing, 12 months$6,900–$12,500

The European Commission guide includes housing, food, transport and personal expenses. Actual rent and lifestyle can increase the amount; do not add a dormitory a second time.

Medicine plus 12 months of living is about $18,400–$24,000; Pharmacy is $16,100–$21,700. Check entrance charges, recognition, insurance, immigration and travel separately. This combines a tariff with a general guide; it is not a complete university invoice.

MU-Sofia publishes the same annual Medicine fee in Bulgarian and English. A Bulgarian preparatory year adds about $4,300 for the course alone and another living period. Preparation does not replace required exams and progression conditions. Dentistry and other institutions have their own tariffs.

If your budget is limited

Compare suitable subjects and institutions, then accommodation and total duration. If Medicine is the goal, changing language does not itself promise savings. An extra preparation year can absorb any fee difference; a different profession calls for a separate non-medical route.

What to prepare next

Prepare Biology and Chemistry grades, language evidence, your school qualification and a whole-degree budget. Identify whether preparation is needed and where you intend to practise professionally.

Amounts are rounded and shown in US dollars using the ECB’s 2026 reference rate. The invoice and payment exchange rate may differ. Do not add housing or proof of funds again to costs already covered. Compare equal periods; StudyU services are accounted for under an agreement.

How StudyU supports your application

Under an agreement with StudyU, we compare agreed Bulgarian programmes, check subject and language requirements, and help prepare the application, translations and visa documents. For medicine, we review the entrance-exam subjects and dates the university publishes. The university decides admission, and the competent Bulgarian authority decides residence permission.

Visa and residence

For full-time study, a non-EU student generally needs a D visa and then residence permission from the competent Bulgarian authority. Admission, housing, insurance and funds are assessed but do not guarantee approval. Permit duration and renewal depend on current conditions and study status.

Language tracks and what to study

English-taught Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy are available, with distinct entrance and clinical-language requirements. The receiving institution assesses recognition for further study; a competent professional body assesses access to regulated practice. Check the specific award, accreditation, placement language and destination requirements; Bologna participation does not automatically confer all professional rights. Preparation adds time and cost; MU-Sofia publishes the same Medicine tuition in Bulgarian and English.

Cities, budget and the calendar

Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna offer different campuses and housing arrangements. Compare an actual tenancy, transport and programme calendar. For medical entry, prepare qualification recognition and the specified Biology, Chemistry and language exams; a deadline or a preparation course does not guarantee admission.

Clarify these before you apply

Are there biology and chemistry entrance tests and on which dates? How many English-taught medicine seats remain this intake? What does tuition include - anatomy labs, insurance, textbooks? Which clinical bases does the university use? For non-medical tracks: what Bulgarian level follows the preparatory year? Written answers before the deposit - our standard procedure.

The takeaway

Bulgaria can suit applicants willing to compare clinical training, accreditation, placement language and the whole degree budget. A Bulgarian-language course is not automatically tuition-free or cheaper. A personal route and test calendar are prepared under an agreement with StudyU; the university decides admission.

How to apply to Bulgaria

After 11 school years, an application requires recognition of completed secondary education and evidence of higher-education access. The institution assesses subjects, language and examinations. For example, MU-Sofia requires recognised documents and language, Biology and Chemistry tests for its medical subjects; a certificate alone does not guarantee a place.

Admission after school and master's

The institution assesses subjects, language and examinations. For master’s admission, the university separately assesses the degree, relevant subjects, grades and language. Duration and fees depend on the programme; an annual undergraduate tariff cannot be applied to a master’s degree. Holding a diploma does not automatically establish admission or a graduate job. What studying in Bulgaria costs

Compare matching periods of tuition and living. Account for preparation, vacations and additional semesters separately; do not add housing or proof of funds again to costs already covered. StudyU services are paid under an agreement.

Frequently asked questions

MU-Sofia’s example is about $11,500 a year for Medicine or $9,200 for Pharmacy. With the Commission’s $6,900–$12,500 guide for 12 months of living, the subtotals are $18,400–$24,000 or $16,100–$21,700 respectively. Preparation, fees, insurance and moving costs need separate checks.

Programmes are available in Bulgarian and English; MU-Sofia lists medical subjects in both languages. Check the entrance-test and clinical-placement language as well. A preparatory course has separate conditions and does not replace selection for a degree.

English-taught medical degrees offer a specific route for applicants who meet recognition and entrance-exam conditions. Compare clinical placements, the full degree budget and professional registration in your intended destination; an EU location does not grant automatic practice rights.
