Aeronautical engineering in Turkey: the short answer

Aeronautical (aircraft) engineering in Turkey is a four-year engineering bachelor's focused on how aircraft are designed, built, powered and certified: aerodynamics, flight mechanics, aircraft structures, propulsion and systems. On this page the verified international option is İstanbul Gelişim University, which lists the bachelor's in English ($6,000 a year) and Turkish ($4,000 a year) on its latest 2025/26 fee list, plus master's and PhD tracks.

It is an engineering degree, not pilot training and not a maintenance licence. If you want to fly, look at professional flight or pilotage programmes; if you want to sign off aircraft maintenance, look at aircraft maintenance and repair or avionics, which prepare for technician licensing.

What the degree covers year by year

The first two years are heavy on mathematics and physics: calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, statics, dynamics, thermodynamics and materials. Aeronautical subjects then build on that base: aerodynamics, gas dynamics, aircraft performance, stability and control, lightweight structures, propulsion and avionics systems.

The last year normally combines electives with a team design project, for example a UAV or the conceptual design of a small aircraft. Most Turkish engineering curricula require compulsory summer internships in industry; ask how the department helps international students find places, because aviation and defence employers may restrict access for foreign nationals.

Year 1
  • Calculus and linear algebra
  • Physics I–II
  • Introduction to aeronautics
  • Programming for engineers
Year 2
  • Statics and dynamics
  • Thermodynamics
  • Materials science
  • Fluid mechanics
Year 3
  • Aerodynamics
  • Aircraft structures
  • Propulsion
  • Flight mechanics
  • First summer internship
Year 4
  • Stability and control
  • Aircraft design project
  • Technical electives
  • Second summer internship

Who aeronautical engineering suits

Choose it if you…

  • You are strong in mathematics and physics and like solving problems on paper and in simulation.
  • You want to work on aircraft or UAV design, testing, certification or aerospace manufacturing.
  • You are ready for a demanding workload and group design projects.

Worth a pause if…

  • Your goal is to fly aircraft; a pilotage programme is the direct route.
  • You want a short, hands-on route to maintenance work; a technician-oriented programme fits better.

Entry requirements for international students

Private Turkish universities admit engineering applicants with the secondary-school certificate and transcript or an international exam score. Mathematics and physics grades carry most weight in practice, even when the published minimum is only an overall average. Gelişim evaluates applications on school results and runs its own English proficiency exam (IGUYET) for English-taught programmes.

  • School certificate and transcript, including the 11-year certificate from Russia or CIS countries, with sworn translations; an equivalence document from the Ministry of National Education is usually needed at registration.
  • Exam scores such as SAT, ACT, A levels, IB or TR-YÖS can strengthen an application or replace the school average where the university allows it.
  • English for the English track: an accepted TOEFL iBT, IELTS or similar result, or the university's exam; otherwise a preparatory year, which Gelişim charges at the same rate as the programme.
  • Master's applicants need a relevant engineering bachelor's; thesis tracks usually also ask for an English score.

How to compare aeronautical engineering programmes

  • Engineering accreditation: check whether the programme holds MÜDEK accreditation or is working towards it; newer private programmes often are not accredited yet.
  • Laboratories: ask about wind-tunnel access, structural testing, propulsion rigs and flight-simulation software used in regular courses.
  • Industry projects: Turkey's aerospace sector is concentrated around Ankara, Istanbul and Eskişehir; check which companies host interns and whether they accept foreign nationals.
  • Language of instruction: English keeps options open for jobs abroad and for master's study in Europe.
  • Faculty profile: look at research output in aerodynamics, structures or UAVs rather than general university rankings.

Careers and professional recognition

Graduates work in aircraft and UAV design offices, aerospace manufacturers and suppliers, airline engineering departments, maintenance organisations (in engineering roles), certification and airworthiness offices, and research. Some move into adjacent fields such as automotive, energy or simulation software.

Defence-related employers frequently require citizenship or security clearance, so international graduates usually find more openings in civil aviation, suppliers and companies in their home country or the EU. If you plan to work abroad as a chartered or licensed engineer, check how that country recognises Turkish engineering degrees before enrolling.

Gelişim's list gives a 7% reduction for paying the full year in advance and an extra $250 reduction for applicants from several countries, including Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. The non-thesis master's costs less ($4,500 in English, $3,750 in Turkish for the whole programme).

Budget separately for housing near the Avcılar campus, health insurance, a residence permit, a capable laptop for CAD and simulation work, and travel for internships.

Planning your application with StudyU

A personal strategy, requirement checks, selection of agreed options, document preparation, applications, and support are provided under an agreement with StudyU. For aeronautical engineering we can compare the English and Turkish tracks against your maths and physics results and prepare the documents Gelişim requests. The university decides admission and scholarships, Türkiye's Ministry of National Education decides school-certificate equivalence, the consulate decides the visa, the migration authority issues the residence permit, and the dormitory or landlord confirms housing.

Aeronautical engineering in Turkey: FAQ

They overlap. Aeronautical engineering concentrates on aircraft within the atmosphere; aerospace programmes add spacecraft, orbital mechanics and space systems. Turkish universities use both names, so compare the course list rather than the title.

No. It is an engineering degree. Pilot licences come from flight training, and aircraft maintenance licences come from technician training and experience under the civil aviation authority's rules.

Yes. Gelişim lists an English-taught bachelor's at $6,000 a year on its 2025/26 fee list. You need an accepted English score or must pass the university's own exam.

Mathematics and physics. Even when a university publishes only an overall average, strong grades in these subjects and in chemistry support both admission and scholarship decisions.

Yes. Gelişim offers thesis and non-thesis master's tracks in English and Turkish and a Turkish-taught PhD; other universities may require an English score and an interview for graduate entry.

No university can promise a placement. Internships are part of the curriculum, but aerospace and defence companies may limit access for foreign nationals, so ask the department which employers accepted international interns recently.
