Automotive engineering in Turkey: the short answer
Automotive engineering is a four-year engineering bachelor's that applies mechanical, electrical and software engineering to vehicles: powertrains, chassis and suspension, vehicle dynamics, crash safety, electric drives and batteries, and the electronics that control them. İstanbul Okan University teaches it in English and lists $5,000 a year for 2026/27, with a 5% reduction for paying in advance.
Turkey is a major vehicle and component manufacturing base, and the Marmara region around Istanbul, Kocaeli and Bursa hosts many plants and suppliers. That proximity makes internships and industry projects easier to organise than in most study destinations at a similar price.
What the curriculum covers
The first two years follow a mechanical-engineering core: calculus, linear algebra, physics, statics, dynamics, strength of materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and technical drawing with CAD. Automotive subjects then take over: internal-combustion and electric powertrains, vehicle dynamics, chassis design, automotive electronics and control, manufacturing processes, and vehicle testing.
Recent curricula add battery systems, electric-motor control, driver-assistance sensors and software. Most Turkish engineering programmes require two summer internships, typically one in production and one in design or testing, and a final-year team project such as a formula-student car, an electric vehicle or a component redesign.
- Calculus and physics
- Technical drawing and CAD
- Introduction to automotive engineering
- Programming
- Statics and dynamics
- Strength of materials
- Thermodynamics
- Electrical circuits
- Powertrain systems
- Vehicle dynamics
- Automotive electronics and control
- Production internship
- Electric and hybrid vehicles
- Chassis and body design
- Vehicle testing
- Design project and internship
A common mistake is to compare automotive engineering with automotive technology. The two-year automotive technology associate programmes that many vocational schools list at a few thousand dollars a year train service technicians, not engineers, and do not lead to an engineering title. Check that your offer names the bachelor's programme in the Faculty of Engineering, and ask whether the preparatory English year is counted inside or outside the four years, because that changes the total cost and the date you can start working.
Who automotive engineering suits
Choose it if you…
- You like mechanics and electronics and want to see them in a product you use every day.
- You are interested in electric vehicles, driver-assistance systems or motorsport.
- You are comfortable with a mathematics-heavy first two years.
Worth a pause if…
- You want a short technician route into car repair; an automotive technology associate degree fits better.
- You prefer software only; computer or AI engineering keeps you closer to pure programming.
Entry requirements for international applicants
Okan and other private universities admit engineering applicants on the school certificate and transcript or international exam scores. Mathematics and physics results matter most. Illustrating the typical thresholds, the criteria Istinye applied in 2025/26 for non-medical bachelor's programmes accept a 50% school average or SAT 1000, ACT 21, IB 28 or TR-YÖS 60/100.
- School documents: certificate and transcript (the 11-year certificate for applicants from Russia and CIS countries), translations and the Ministry of National Education equivalence at registration.
- English: accepted TOEFL iBT, IELTS or similar results, or Okan's own proficiency exam; otherwise a preparatory year first.
- Graduate route: Okan also lists an English-taught thesis master's in Automotive Mechatronics and Intelligent Vehicles for engineering graduates.
How to compare automotive engineering programmes
- Accreditation: check whether the programme holds MÜDEK accreditation, which signals that curriculum and outcomes were externally reviewed.
- Labs: engine and chassis dynamometers, battery and motor test benches, and CAD/CAE licences show how practical the degree is.
- Student teams: formula-student, electric-vehicle and efficiency-challenge teams give real design experience.
- Industry partners: ask which manufacturers and suppliers host interns and whether they accept foreign students.
- Electric-vehicle content: compare how many courses cover batteries, power electronics and motor control.
Careers after automotive engineering
Graduates work in design and simulation, testing and validation, production and quality, powertrain and battery engineering, and technical sales for manufacturers and suppliers. Transferable skills also lead to rail, aerospace suppliers, energy and industrial automation.
Engineers in Türkiye join the relevant TMMOB chamber to sign certain professional documents; if you plan to work abroad, check how that country recognises Turkish engineering degrees. A MÜDEK-accredited programme can make that assessment easier.
University offering automotive engineering
Okan publishes yearly bachelor's fees and whole-programme master's fees.

| University | Degree | Language | Tuition (academic year) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Okan University | Bachelor | English | $5,000/yr · 2026/27 · official fee |
| Okan University (Automotive Mechatronics & Intelligent Vehicles) | Master | English | $6,000 whole programme (thesis) · 2026/27 · official fee |
Paying the full year in advance lowers Okan's bachelor's fee to $4,750. The preparatory English year, if you need it, is charged in addition.
Budget for housing near the Tuzla campus or in Istanbul, transport, health insurance, residence-permit fees and a laptop able to run CAD and simulation software.
How StudyU supports automotive engineering applicants
A personal strategy, requirement checks, selection of agreed options, document preparation, applications, and support are provided under an agreement with StudyU. For automotive engineering we can check Okan's current language and document requirements for your intake and compare it with other engineering options within your budget. The university decides admission and scholarships, Türkiye's Ministry of National Education decides school-certificate equivalence, the consulate decides the visa, the migration authority issues the residence permit, and the dormitory or landlord confirms housing.
