Computer and Instructional Technologies Teaching in Turkey

Computer and Instructional Technologies Teaching (Turkish: Bilgisayar ve Öğretim Teknolojileri Öğretmenliği, often shortened to BÖTE) is a four-year teacher-education degree that prepares ICT teachers and specialists in instructional design and e-learning. The option we track is at Bahçeşehir University (BAU) in Istanbul, whose School of Educational Sciences is billed at $8 500 a year for 2026–27. BAU’s current international programme list does not show this department, so confirm that it is open to international applicants before you plan around it.

• Length: four years (eight semesters), with school-based teaching practice in the final year.
• Two halves: computing (programming, networks, databases) and education (pedagogy, instructional design, assessment).
• Outcome: a bachelor’s in education; the right to teach in a given country is granted separately by that country’s authorities.
• Main alternative: if the department is closed to new international students, consider instructional technology at master’s level after a computing or education bachelor’s.

Teacher-education degrees in Turkey follow a national framework set by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), so the education side of the programme looks similar across universities: educational psychology, teaching principles and methods, classroom management, assessment, and a final-year teaching practicum in schools. The field side covers the technology you will teach and design with.

The strongest programmes give you real classroom time before the final year, for example observation hours or tutoring projects in schools.

• Secondary-school certificate with transcripts. If your certificate follows an 11-year system (Russia and several CIS countries), ask the university whether it is accepted for an education degree.
• Exam or grade route. Private universities in Turkey accept school grades, SAT or YÖS scores in different combinations. The 2026 TR-YÖS/1 sitting was held on 12 April 2026.
• English. BAU accepts TOEFL iBT 72 or PTE Academic 55 for most undergraduate programmes and does not accept IELTS, Duolingo or TOEFL Home Edition; its own proficiency exam is an option after registration. Check the teaching language of this particular department in writing.
• Intake confirmation. Because the department is missing from BAU’s international list, get a written statement that the programme will take international students in your intake before paying any deposit.
• After admission: the diploma equivalence certificate from the Ministry of National Education and a student residence permit.

1. Is the programme admitting students? Teacher-education quotas in Turkey change from year to year; an old programme page is not proof of an open intake.
2. Practicum schools. Ask which schools host teaching practice and in which language you would teach there.
3. Labs and platforms. Look for computer labs, a learning-management system you can administer as a student, and robotics or maker equipment.
4. Accreditation. EPDAD is the teacher-education accreditor registered with YÖKAK. An accredited programme is easier to explain to a recognition body at home.
5. Recognition at home. If you plan to teach in your own country, check early whether its education ministry recognises a Turkish education degree for teaching and whether extra exams apply.

Graduates teach ICT, coding and digital skills in private and international schools, work as instructional designers and e-learning developers for companies and universities, administer learning platforms, and join education-technology firms as content or training specialists.

A Turkish education degree does not by itself give the right to teach in state schools. In Turkey, permanent state-school teaching posts are civil-service positions, and Law No. 657 lists Turkish citizenship among the general conditions for civil servants. In other countries, recognition of the diploma and any licence to teach are decided by the national education authority. Private schools and corporate training are therefore the most realistic first employers for international graduates.

BAU’s 2026–27 fee list prices its School of Educational Sciences at $8 500 a year. The table applies that band to this department, but the fee should be confirmed together with the intake itself. Add a possible English preparatory year, housing in Istanbul, health insurance, the residence-permit card and a laptop capable of running development and authoring tools.
