Artificial intelligence engineering in Turkey: the short answer

Artificial Intelligence Engineering in Turkey is offered as a four-year bachelor's and as one-and-a-half to two-year master's programmes. Bahçeşehir teaches the bachelor's in English at $12,000 a year for 2026/27, Haliç lists a Turkish-taught bachelor's at $4,700 a year, and several Istanbul universities run AI master's programmes in English or Turkish, from about $2,700 to $14,000 depending on the university and fee basis.

The bachelor's is an engineering degree built on computer science and mathematics, with machine learning, deep learning, computer vision and natural language processing as the specialist layer. The master's assumes you already have a computing or engineering degree and moves quickly into advanced models and research.

Bachelor's and master's structure

In the bachelor's, the first two years cover programming, algorithms, discrete mathematics, calculus, linear algebra, probability and computer systems. Years three and four add machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning, computer vision, NLP, robotics or embedded AI electives, AI ethics and a capstone project. Summer internships are usually compulsory.

Master's programmes come in two forms. A thesis master's lasts about two years and ends with a research thesis, which matters if you might later do a PhD. A non-thesis master's lasts about one and a half years, uses a term project instead of a thesis and suits working professionals. Fees are quoted either per year or for the whole programme, so compare total cost, not the headline number.

Who AI engineering suits

Choose it if you…

  • You are strong in mathematics and enjoy programming.
  • You want to build and deploy learning systems, not only use AI tools.
  • For the master's: you hold a computing, engineering or quantitative bachelor's.

Worth a pause if…

  • You mostly want to use AI in marketing or design without heavy mathematics.
  • For the master's: your bachelor's is unrelated and you have little programming experience.

Entry requirements for bachelor's and master's applicants

Bachelor's. Private universities accept the school certificate and transcript or SAT, ACT, A levels, IB and TR-YÖS results. Mathematics grades carry the most weight. Russian and CIS applicants use the 11-year certificate; the Ministry of National Education equivalence document is needed at registration. English-taught tracks require TOEFL iBT, IELTS or the university's exam, otherwise a preparatory year; the Turkish-taught Haliç track requires an accepted Turkish level.

Master's. You need a relevant bachelor's degree and transcript. Istinye, for example, states that international graduate applicants need at least 60% success in their previous degree, that ALES is not required for international students, and that thesis programmes require an English score regardless of the teaching language.

  • Prepare a CV and statement of purpose that name the AI areas you want to work on.
  • Keep course descriptions from your bachelor's; universities may check that you studied programming and mathematics.
  • For thesis tracks, contact potential supervisors early.

How to compare AI engineering programmes

  • Fee basis: Bahçeşehir and Okan quote master's fees for the whole programme; Üsküdar and Istinye quote per year.
  • Computing power: ask about GPU clusters or cloud credits for projects and theses.
  • Research groups: look for active labs in vision, NLP or robotics with recent publications.
  • Language: English keeps doors open for jobs and PhDs abroad; Turkish-taught options are cheaper but narrower.
  • Accreditation: AI engineering departments are new; check MÜDEK status of the university's established engineering programmes.

Careers after AI engineering

Graduates become machine-learning engineers, computer-vision or NLP engineers, data scientists, robotics software engineers and AI researchers in technology companies, banks, telecom, defence suppliers, healthcare technology and start-ups. There is no licence to practise; portfolios, internships and publications decide hiring.

A thesis master's with a publication is the usual stepping stone to PhD programmes and research roles. For work outside Turkey, an English-taught degree and a public project record make your profile easier for employers to assess.

Non-thesis tracks cost less: Okan lists $5,000 for the whole programme, Bahçeşehir $12,000, Üsküdar $4,400 and Nişantaşı $3,300, while Haliç charges the same $2,700 for both tracks. Yaşar in İzmir charges $7,200 for its whole English-taught master's, with thesis and non-thesis tracks. Gedik's latest list covers 2025/26, and Haliç, Nişantaşı and Yaşar print no academic year, so confirm those amounts at application.

Remember the extra costs: a preparatory language year if needed, a laptop suitable for model training, housing, health insurance and the residence permit.

How StudyU supports AI engineering applicants

A personal strategy, requirement checks, selection of agreed options, document preparation, applications, and support are provided under an agreement with StudyU. For AI engineering we can compare bachelor's and master's options on total cost, language and research fit, and prepare the statement of purpose and document set each university requests. The university decides admission and scholarships, Türkiye's Ministry of National Education decides school-certificate equivalence, the consulate decides the visa, the migration authority issues the residence permit, and the dormitory or landlord confirms housing.

AI engineering in Turkey: FAQ

Yes. Bahçeşehir teaches the bachelor's in English, and Üsküdar, Okan, Yaşar, Istinye and Bahçeşehir offer English-taught master's options.

Haliç lists its Turkish-taught master's at $2,700 with or without a thesis, and Nişantaşı at $3,850 (thesis) or $3,300 (non-thesis); among English options, Okan lists $5,000 for the whole non-thesis programme.

Choose a thesis master's if you may apply for a PhD or research role; a non-thesis master's is shorter and suits people moving into industry roles.

Istinye states that ALES is not required from international applicants; other universities publish their own rules, and some may ask for an interview or English score instead.

Computer engineering is broader, covering hardware, networks and software. AI engineering keeps the computing core but replaces some of that breadth with machine learning, vision and language technologies.

Calculus, linear algebra and probability are the foundation; strong school results in mathematics are the best predictor of success in the first year.
