What this degree covers
Jewelry design in Turkey is taught mainly in Turkish, as a four-year bachelor's or a two-year associate degree. Altınbaş University in Istanbul runs both: a Jewelry Design bachelor's in its School of Applied Sciences at $5,000 a year and a Jewelry and Jewelry Design associate programme at $4,250 a year, according to its current international programme listing (2025/26 fee table).
The subject combines design and craft. You learn to draw and model pieces, understand metals and gemstones, and then make them: casting, stone setting, finishing and, increasingly, 3D modelling and printing of wax models. Business modules cover collections, branding and pricing, because many graduates end up selling their own work.
Istanbul is one of the world's historic jewellery centres. The Grand Bazaar workshops and Kuyumcukent, the purpose-built jewellery district in Bahçelievler, concentrate manufacturers, wholesalers and craftspeople. Altınbaş states that its associate students train at Kuyumcukent and at a production facility, which gives them daily contact with the industry.
What you study
Expect a studio-based timetable with long workshop sessions. Theory classes (art history, materials, gemmology) support the practical work, and each year ends with a project or small collection reviewed by a jury.
- Design fundamentals
- Jewellery drawing and rendering
- Materials: precious metals and stones
- History of jewellery and ornament
- Workshop techniques I
- Manufacturing technology
- 3D jewellery modelling (CAD)
- Metalworking and soldering
- Gemmology
- Workshop II
- Collection design
- Casting and stone setting
- Branding and sales
- Digital fabrication and 3D printing
- Design project
- Individual collection and exhibition
- Professional practice and pricing
- Portfolio and photography of work
- Graduation project
The associate programme covers the practical core (drawing, workshop, casting, setting, CAD) in two years and leaves out most of the theory and business modules. Altınbaş also points out that associate graduates can try to continue to a bachelor's through Turkey's national vertical-transfer exam (DGS).
Entry requirements for international applicants
Admission for international students at private universities is based on school documents; there is no national aptitude test for this route.
- School certificate. A completed secondary-school diploma and transcript, with the equivalence document (denklik) completed at registration.
- Turkish. Both Altınbaş programmes are taught in Turkish. Without a B2 certificate you start with Turkish preparation; at Altınbaş the preparatory fee for undergraduate and associate students equals one year of the programme's tuition.
- Portfolio. Not a published requirement, but sketches, photographs of objects you have made or digital models strengthen the application and help you judge whether the field suits you.
- Prepayment. Altınbaş asks for a $1,000 prepayment to confirm admission and issue the final acceptance documents; it is deducted from tuition.
How to choose a jewellery programme
- Bachelor's or associate? The associate route is shorter and more hands-on; the bachelor's adds design theory, business and a stronger portfolio for design-led jobs or a master's.
- Workshop hours. Ask how many hours a week you spend at the bench and whether workshops are open outside class.
- Industry links. Programmes connected to manufacturers in Kuyumcukent or the Grand Bazaar area give you internships and a network.
- Digital skills. Check that CAD software such as Rhino or MatrixGold and 3D printing are taught; most production now starts from a digital model.
- Related degrees. If you need English-taught study, look at industrial design or fashion and textile design programmes and add jewellery courses or short training separately.
Universities offering Jewelry Design
The jewellery programmes we could verify with a published international fee.

| University | Degree | Language | Tuition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Altinbas University — Jewelry Design | Bachelor | Turkish | $5,000/yr (2025/26 listing) |
| Altinbas University — Jewelry and Jewelry Design | Associate | Turkish | $4,250/yr (2025/26 listing) |
Altınbaş has not published a separate fee schedule for new 2026/27 entrants; its tuition page states that the fee and any scholarship in the offer letter apply.
What it costs
At the listed fees, four years of the bachelor's cost about $20,000 in tuition and the two-year associate degree about $8,500, before any increase or scholarship. A Turkish preparatory year, if needed, costs the same as one year of the programme.
The $1,000 prepayment is refundable only if a Turkish student visa is officially refused, and then minus a $250 administrative deduction, according to Altınbaş's refund policy.
Budget for tools, metals and stones for projects, which are often bought by students, as well as rent, transport to the Mahmutbey campus in Bağcılar, the residence permit and insurance.
Careers in jewellery design
Graduates work in design, production and retail:
- designer for jewellery manufacturers and brands;
- CAD modeller preparing pieces for casting and 3D printing;
- bench jeweller, stone setter or finishing specialist;
- product developer or buyer for retail chains;
- independent designer selling collections online and at fairs.
Salaries and freelance income vary widely with skill and portfolio; a strong collection and CAD speed usually matter more to employers than the diploma alone.
Working for a Turkish employer requires a work permit. Many graduates return home to work with Turkish suppliers, using contacts made during their studies, or combine design work with online sales.
