Film Design in Turkey at a glance

Film Design is a four-year filmmaking bachelor’s covering scriptwriting, directing, cinematography, editing and post-production. In Turkey, Yaşar University in İzmir runs a Department of Film Design, but its current list of programmes for international applicants does not include it, so confirm availability before planning around it. English-taught alternatives with 2026–27 fees are Film and Television at Bahçeşehir ($8 500 a year) and Radio, Television and Film at Bilgi ($12 000), both in Istanbul.

  • Length: four years, plus an English preparatory year if needed.
  • Core: screenwriting, directing, camera and lighting, sound, editing and colour, production management and film history.
  • What you graduate with: a showreel of short films and at least one graduation film, which matters more to employers than grades.
  • Before applying: ask Yaşar in writing whether Film Design accepts international students for your intake and in which language it is taught.

What a film design curriculum covers

Yaşar’s department says students gain broad experience across filmmaking roles before specialising, with scriptwriting, directing, production, cinematography, editing and post-production as its core areas. Film programmes in Turkey usually follow this pattern:

Year 1
  • Visual storytelling and film language
  • Photography and camera basics
  • History of cinema
  • Introduction to editing
Year 2
  • Screenwriting
  • Directing actors
  • Cinematography and lighting
  • Sound recording and design
Year 3
  • Documentary and fiction workshops
  • Post-production and colour grading
  • Production management and budgeting
  • Internship with a production company or broadcaster
Year 4
  • Graduation film project
  • Film festivals and distribution
  • Specialised electives in animation, VFX or series writing
  • Portfolio and showreel

Expect to work in crews on other students’ films as well as your own; that teamwork is part of the grading.

Entry requirements for international applicants

  • School certificate with transcripts. Bilgi publishes a 50% minimum average and SAT 1000, ACT 18 or IB 28 as alternative routes; other universities set their own rules.
  • English. Bahçeşehir lists TOEFL iBT 72 or PTE Academic 55 and does not accept IELTS, Duolingo or TOEFL Home Edition; Bilgi lists TOEFL iBT 75 or PTE Academic 60. Without a score you start with the preparatory programme.
  • Creative work. Even where no portfolio is required, a short film, photo series or script sample strengthens scholarship and interview discussions.
  • After admission: diploma equivalence from the Ministry of National Education and a student residence permit.

How to compare film programmes

  1. Equipment access. Ask which cameras, lenses, lights and editing suites first-year students can book, and how often.
  2. Production budgets. Find out whether the school funds graduation films or whether students pay for locations, actors and crew.
  3. Industry links. Istanbul is the centre of Turkey’s series and film production, which makes set internships easier to find than in smaller cities.
  4. Programme focus. Film design and filmmaking programmes centre on making films; radio-TV-cinema and film-and-television degrees add broadcasting, media theory and television formats. See the Film and Television and Radio, Television and Film pages for those tracks.

Careers after the degree

Yaşar’s department names director, producer, scriptwriter, camera operator and editor as graduate roles in TV and film production. Other routes include assistant director, production coordinator, colourist, post-production artist, content producer for brands and platforms, and festival or distribution work.

Most careers start with freelance set work and short contracts. Many Turkish productions work in Turkish, so international students who learn the language gain more set experience during their studies.

Who this degree suits

A good fit if you…

  • already make short videos or write stories;
  • like working in crews under deadlines;
  • are ready to build a showreel from the first year.

Think twice if you…

  • want a stable, office-based career straight after graduating;
  • are not prepared for extra spending on your own productions;
  • need a Film Design programme confirmed in English before you can apply.
Where to study

Where to study film in Turkey

Yaşar’s Film Design department, plus English-taught filmmaking alternatives in Istanbul with dated fees.

Film Design at Yasar University

Fees are the universities’ own list prices, checked on 29 September 2026. “On request” means the university publishes no fee with a 2026–27 label; ask it for a written quote.

Budgeting for 2026–27

Dated 2026–27 fees on this page: Bahçeşehir $8 500 a year for its School of Communication, which includes Film and Television, and Bilgi $12 000 for Radio, Television and Film. Yaşar’s fee page does not state an academic year, so ask for a written quote for any programme there. Short-film budgets for locations, actors, equipment insurance and festival entries can add a noticeable amount, especially in the final year.

Common questions

Yaşar still has a Film Design department, but the programme is missing from its current list for international applicants. Ask the university in writing before applying.
