Bioengineering in Turkey

Bioengineering is an engineering degree that applies biology, chemistry and engineering design to living systems: bioprocesses and fermentation, tissue engineering and biomaterials, genetic engineering and bioinformatics. Üsküdar University and Okan University (as Genetics and Bioengineering) teach four-year English-taught bachelor's programmes at $5,000 a year for 2026/27, and graduate study is available at Üsküdar (master's) and Bahçeşehir (master's and PhD).

It differs from biomedical engineering, which concentrates on medical devices, imaging and clinical technology. Bioengineering sits closer to biotechnology and chemical engineering: you learn to design processes and products based on cells, enzymes and biomolecules.

The first year combines engineering mathematics and physics with general chemistry and cell biology. The second year adds organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, thermodynamics and programming. Third and fourth years move into bioprocess engineering, transport phenomena, genetic engineering, bioinformatics, biomaterials and tissue engineering, with laboratory courses in cell culture, molecular techniques and bioreactors.

Most programmes include summer internships in laboratories, pharmaceutical or food companies, and a final-year design or research project. Graduate study splits into thesis master's (about two years) and non-thesis tracks, then a four-year PhD for research careers.

Before applying, compare the programme's laboratory hours with its lecture hours. Two bioengineering degrees with similar titles can differ sharply: one may run weekly wet-lab sessions from the second year, another may keep most practical work for the final project. Ask for the current study plan with ECTS per course and the list of laboratory modules, and check whether students can join faculty research projects as undergraduates, which is the best preparation for a thesis master's.

Bachelor's. Üsküdar and other private universities admit on the school certificate and transcript or SAT, ACT, IB, A levels and TR-YÖS results. Biology, chemistry and mathematics grades matter most. Russian and CIS applicants apply with the 11-year certificate and later provide the Ministry of National Education equivalence. For the English-taught programme you need an accepted English score or the university's own exam; otherwise the preparatory year comes first.

Master's and PhD. You need a related bachelor's (bioengineering, biology, chemistry, chemical or biomedical engineering) and, for the PhD, usually a master's. Bahçeşehir's thesis master's and PhD are English-taught; thesis programmes generally require an English score and may include an interview with the department.

• List your laboratory experience and any research projects in the CV.
• Contact potential supervisors early for thesis and PhD tracks.

• Laboratories: cell-culture rooms, molecular-biology equipment and bioreactors used in regular courses, not only by research staff.
• Research groups: look at recent publications and funded projects in the department.
• Accreditation: check MÜDEK status for the bachelor's.
• Fee basis for graduate study: Üsküdar and Bahçeşehir both quote the whole programme, so compare totals, then add a preparatory year if you need one.
• Links to hospitals and industry: Üsküdar's health-sciences profile and hospital network can matter for biomedical-oriented projects.

Graduates work in biotechnology and pharmaceutical production and quality control, food and fermentation industries, research laboratories, bioinformatics, regulatory affairs and technical sales for laboratory equipment. A master's or PhD opens research and development positions and academic careers.

Laboratory and production roles in regulated industries require knowledge of good manufacturing and laboratory practice rather than a personal licence. For work abroad, an English-taught degree and strong laboratory experience make your profile easier to assess.

Paying the year in advance lowers the bachelor's fee to $4,500 at Üsküdar and $4,750 at Okan. Üsküdar's non-thesis master's costs $4,400 for the whole programme. Graduate fees at both Üsküdar and Bahçeşehir cover the entire study period (two years for a thesis master's, four years for Bahçeşehir's PhD).

Laboratory coats and consumables, housing, health insurance and residence-permit fees come on top of tuition.
