Genetics and Bioengineering in Turkey: the short answer
Genetics and Bioengineering (Genetik ve Biyomühendislik) is a four-year engineering bachelor's that teaches you to modify cells, grow tissue, design biomaterials and scale biological processes up for industry. For a 2026/27 start, the English-taught option we recommend is Istanbul Okan University: $5,000 a year, or $4,750 if the year is paid in advance.
Istanbul Bilgi University still lists the degree on its fee sheet, but its department page states that the programme will not admit new students from the 2026/27 academic year; current students finish under the 2025/26 curriculum. Sabanci University runs a separate degree, Molecular Biology, Genetics and Bioengineering, with a $36,500 list fee and a research-university format; it has its own page, and the choice between the two is mostly a choice between budget and research intensity.
What the Okan curriculum covers, year by year
Okan's published study plan for the English-taught programme front-loads the maths: four semesters of Mathematics, two of Probability and Statistics and a Computer Programming course sit alongside the biology. Laboratory work becomes heavy in the second and third years; Cell and Tissue Engineering alone carries four practical hours a week.
The final year turns to industry: two Industrial Genetics and Bioengineering courses, a design course and a graduation project that runs through the last semester. Besides the core, students take a foreign-language elective (Chinese or Russian) or academic English each term.

- Are really hoping for medicine: this degree does not lead to clinical practice or a medical licence.
- Dislike calculus and programming, which stay compulsory through the second year.
Entry requirements for international applicants
Okan admits international students on their school record through its online system, where you may list up to three programmes in order of preference. After placement the International Office issues a full acceptance letter, which you then use for the student visa at a Turkish consulate.
- Documents: passport, school diploma and transcript with translations, and the equivalence certificate (denklik) from the Turkish education attaché or, where there is none, in Istanbul.
- English: TOEFL iBT 72, PTE Academic 55 or Cambridge CAE/CPE grade C lets you skip the preparatory year. Okan states that it does not accept IELTS; without an accepted result you sit its own test and need 80 out of 100.
- Subjects: expect the university to look closely at chemistry, biology and mathematics grades.
- School diploma earned online: a YÖK decision of 6 November 2020 bars distance-education diplomas obtained abroad while the student lived elsewhere; universities may check passport stamps.
Careers after Genetics and Bioengineering
Graduates work in biotechnology and pharmaceutical production, in quality-control and R&D laboratories, in companies making biomaterials, implants and medical devices, and in bioinformatics support roles. Research posts in genetics, tissue engineering or synthetic biology usually expect a master's or PhD.
Laboratory work with patients' samples, such as clinical genetic testing, is regulated in most countries and is normally led by medically qualified specialists; plan for a supporting or technical role there. Working in Turkey after graduation also requires a work permit arranged by the employer.

Okan charges the fee yearly with instalments; paying the year in advance brings it to $4,750. A preparatory English year, if you need one, adds a year to your budget. Add housing, health insurance and the residence-permit fee on top of tuition.
Bilgi's fee sheet still shows $12,000 for the programme, but the department has stopped taking new students from 2026/27, so we no longer list it as an option.
