Mathematics Education in Turkey

A mathematics education bachelor's in Turkey is a four-year teacher-training degree that combines university mathematics with pedagogy and supervised teaching in schools. TED University in Ankara teaches Mathematics Education in English for $7,500 a year, and İstanbul Medipol University teaches Primary Mathematics Teaching in Turkish for $5,500 a year (2026/27), with a lower amount for payment in advance.

The two parts of the degree carry equal weight. On the mathematics side you take calculus, linear algebra, geometry, statistics and number theory; on the education side, developmental and educational psychology, teaching methods, assessment, classroom management and the use of technology in maths lessons.

Before you enrol, be clear where you plan to teach. The degree trains teachers for the Turkish school system, whose state-school posts are filled through national civil-service procedures. International graduates more often teach in private or international schools, tutoring centres, or return home, where their own ministry decides how a Turkish teaching diploma is recognised.

Mathematics courses dominate the first two years; teaching methods and school practice take over in years three and four, ending with a semester or more of supervised teaching.

An English-taught programme such as TEDU's is a practical fit if you want to teach maths in English at international or bilingual schools. A Turkish-taught programme prepares you for Turkish classrooms and requires advanced Turkish from the start.

Both universities admit international students on their school record; there is no national entrance exam for this route.

• Documents. TEDU asks for your passport, secondary-school diploma (or a certificate with expected graduation date and score), official transcript, exam results and a photograph; at registration, apostilled originals, the Turkish high-school equivalency certificate and a valid visa or residence permit.
• English at TEDU. For TOEFL iBT results taken before 21 January 2026 the minimum is 79 (Writing 20); on the new 1–6 scale introduced from that date the minimum is 4 overall and 4 in Writing. Cambridge CAE grade C is also accepted, and otherwise you study at TEDU's English Language School first.
• Turkish at Medipol. The programme is taught in Turkish, so B2 Turkish or Medipol's Turkish foundation year ($1,390 in 2026/27) comes first.
• Mathematics. Strong school maths is essential; the first-year calculus and proof courses are demanding.

1. Teaching degree or mathematics degree? A mathematics bachelor's gives you more mathematics and wider career options; a teaching degree gives you pedagogy and school practice built in.
2. Language of your future classroom. Choose English if you aim for international schools; Turkish if you want Turkish schools and can reach an advanced level.
3. Recognition at home. Ask your home ministry of education how it treats a Turkish teacher-training degree before you commit.
4. Practice placements. Ask how many weeks you teach in real schools and whether placements include international schools.
5. Scholarships. TEDU publishes 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% scholarship levels for international undergraduates; the university awards them.

Four years of tuition come to $22,000 at Medipol (2026/27) and $30,000 at TEDU before scholarships. At TEDU the English preparatory year costs the same as a year of the programme; at Medipol, Turkish foundation costs $1,390.

Ankara is generally cheaper to live in than Istanbul, which narrows the total difference between the two options. Budget for rent, transport, residence permit and insurance.

Common paths for international graduates:

• mathematics teacher at private, bilingual or international schools;
• tutor or course designer at exam-preparation centres and online platforms;
• educational content developer for publishers and ed-tech companies;
• teacher in your home country, after recognition of the diploma;
• master's study in mathematics education, educational technology or curriculum design.

Teaching in Turkish state schools is a civil-service career with national selection rules. Working in a private school in Turkey requires an employer-sponsored work permit.

1. During your final school year: take TOEFL iBT or CAE for TEDU, or plan Turkish study for Medipol.
2. Application: submit passport, diploma or graduation certificate, transcript and exam results online.
3. Offer: pay the first tuition instalment requested, receive the acceptance letter and apply for a student visa.
4. Registration: bring apostilled documents, the equivalency certificate and a valid visa, then apply for the residence permit.
