What this degree covers

A mathematics bachelor's in Turkey is a four-year, proof-based degree covering analysis, algebra, geometry, differential equations, probability and numerical methods, usually with programming and applied electives. Most private-university options are English-taught: İstinye at $8,000 a year and Bilgi at $12,000 (2026/27), TED University in Ankara at $11,800; Haliç teaches it in Turkish for $4,700 a year.

Mathematics departments are small, which is an advantage. İstinye, for example, lists a quota of ten international places for its programme, so classes are closer to seminars than to lecture halls, and you get to know the faculty who will write your references for a master's or PhD.

The degree is less about calculation than about reasoning. From the first semester you are expected to write proofs, and the transition from school mathematics is the hardest part for most students. After that, the subject opens paths into data science, finance, software, research and teaching.

What you study

The first two years build the core; the last two let you lean towards pure mathematics, applied mathematics or statistics and computing through electives and a graduation project.

Year 1
  • Calculus I–II
  • Linear algebra
  • Introduction to proofs
  • Analytic geometry
  • Programming for mathematics
Year 2
  • Advanced calculus
  • Differential equations
  • Abstract algebra
  • Probability
  • Discrete mathematics
Year 3
  • Real and complex analysis
  • Numerical analysis
  • Mathematical statistics
  • Topology or geometry
  • Electives in applied mathematics
Year 4
  • Electives: optimisation, cryptography, financial mathematics or data science
  • Mathematical modelling
  • Seminar or research project
  • Graduation thesis

If you want to combine maths with another field, ask about double-major and minor rules early. Mathematics pairs well with computer engineering, economics or physics, and the combined degree strengthens applications for technical jobs.

Entry requirements for international applicants

Private universities admit international students on documents and English level; no national entrance exam is required, though strong mathematics results are expected.

  • School record. Diploma and transcript with high mathematics grades; Atılım, for example, asks for at least 50% success in the graduation GPA. Olympiad results or SAT Math scores strengthen an application.
  • English. Requirements differ: Bilgi accepts TOEFL iBT 75, PTE 60, CAE grade C or FCE grade B; TEDU asks for TOEFL iBT 79 (Writing 20) on the old scale or 4 on the new scale introduced in January 2026. Without a score you take the university's exam and possibly a preparatory year.
  • Turkish track. Haliç's programme is taught in Turkish, so plan for B2 Turkish.
  • Documents. Passport, diploma or expected-graduation certificate, transcript, exam results; at registration, the equivalency certificate and legalised originals.

How to choose a mathematics programme

  1. Pure or applied? Check the elective list: some departments lean towards analysis and algebra, others towards statistics, computing and financial mathematics.
  2. Class size and research. Small departments give access to faculty; ask whether undergraduates join research projects or summer schools.
  3. Computing. Programming in Python, R or MATLAB should be part of the degree if you aim for data or finance jobs.
  4. Price versus scholarships. TEDU publishes 25–100% scholarship levels; Bilgi offers need- and merit-based discounts on application. Compare the net amount.
  5. City. İstinye, Bilgi and Haliç are in Istanbul; TEDU and Atılım are in Ankara, where living costs are generally lower.

Bachelor's fees are per year; Haliç's and Bahçeşehir's graduate fees cover the whole programme.

What it costs

Four years of tuition range from about $18,800 at Haliç to $32,000 at İstinye, $47,200 at TEDU and $48,000 at Bilgi before scholarships.

Preparatory English costs $8,000 at İstinye (2026/27) and the equivalent of one programme year at TEDU; İstinye deducts the preparatory fee from the programme total paid.

Add living costs, the residence permit, health insurance and a reliable laptop for programming.

Careers after a mathematics degree

Mathematics graduates are hired for their problem-solving and modelling skills:

  • data analyst or junior data scientist;
  • actuarial, risk or quantitative analyst in banks and insurers (with further professional exams);
  • software developer or tester, especially with a computing minor;
  • operations-research or logistics analyst;
  • master's and PhD study leading to research or university teaching.

School teaching usually requires an additional teaching qualification in the country where you plan to teach. In Turkey, employment requires an employer-sponsored work permit.

Is this program right for you?

It clicks if you…

  • You enjoy abstract reasoning and are persistent with hard problems.
  • You liked proofs or olympiad-style problems at school.
  • You want flexible options between research, finance and technology.

Consider carefully if…

  • You prefer applied problems with immediate practical results; engineering or statistics may suit you better.
  • You struggle with self-study; mathematics requires hours of independent work each week.

How to apply

  1. During your final school year: take an accepted English test and, if possible, SAT Math to strengthen your file.
  2. Application: apply online with passport, transcript and graduation certificate; Bilgi can issue a conditional acceptance before you graduate.
  3. Offer: pay the deposit or first instalment requested and apply for a student visa with the acceptance letter.
  4. Registration: bring the equivalency certificate and legalised documents, then apply for the residence permit.

FAQ about the program

Yes. İstinye, Bilgi, TEDU and Atılım teach mathematics in English; Haliç teaches it in Turkish.

Haliç's Turkish-taught programme at $4,700 a year, though its page does not state the year. Among English-taught options with a 2026/27 fee, İstinye at $8,000 is the lowest.

Bahçeşehir's international programme list shows a Turkish-taught Mathematics PhD but no mathematics bachelor's.

Data analysis, finance and insurance, software, operations research and academic research are the most common routes.

Not usually at private universities, but a strong SAT Math score can support your application and scholarship chances.

Transfers depend on each university's rules, but many mathematics students add a minor or double major in computer engineering or economics.
