Tourist Guidance in Turkey

Tourist Guidance (Turizm Rehberliği) is a Turkish-taught university programme, offered as a four-year bachelor's or a two-year associate degree, that prepares licensed tour guides in history, archaeology, art history and guiding practice. Gelişim's latest list (2025/26) shows $3,500 a year for the bachelor's and $2,750 for the associate. One point decides whether it suits you: under Law No. 6326, the professional tourist-guide licence in Turkey requires Turkish citizenship.

That rule does not make the degree useless for international students, but it changes its purpose. Without citizenship you cannot work as a licensed guide in Turkey; you can, however, use the training in tour operation, travel agencies, destination marketing, museum and heritage work, or as a guide in your home country under its own rules.

If your real goal is to guide groups on Turkish sites, check your citizenship position first. If your goal is a tourism career with deep knowledge of Anatolian history and culture, the degree remains a strong, specialised choice.

Study tours are the heart of the degree. Ask how many days of field trips are included, which regions they cover and whether their transport and accommodation costs are included in tuition.

• a completed secondary-school certificate and transcript meeting the university's minimum grade;
• Turkish at the level the university sets, or its Turkish preparatory school (Gelişim lists $1,750 a year on its 2025/26 list);
• strong knowledge of at least one foreign language, which you will use for guiding practice;
• a passport and translated documents, and after admission the equivalence certificate (denklik) for your school diploma.

If you hope to obtain the Turkish licence later, read the full conditions: besides citizenship, Law No. 6326 requires a guiding degree (or another bachelor's plus an approved training programme), a foreign-language score of at least 75 on ÖSYM's YDS exam or an equivalent, a practical study trip and a professional admission exam.

1. Before anything else. Confirm whether your citizenship allows you to hold a Turkish guiding licence, and decide what you will do with the degree if it does not.
2. Six to nine months before. Start Turkish, keep improving your strongest foreign language and gather school documents.
3. Application. Apply online to the universities; the university decides admission.
4. After acceptance. Pay the deposit shown in the letter and apply for a student visa; the consulate decides.
5. On arrival. Register, obtain denklik and apply for the residence permit, which the migration authority decides.

• Field trips. Days on site, regions covered and what they cost you.
• Languages. Which foreign languages are taught to guiding level, and how many hours.
• Staff. Archaeologists, art historians and licensed guides on the teaching team.
• Two-year or four-year. Both routes count towards the Turkish licence, but a bachelor's gives broader history and management training.
• Plan B. Look for tour-operation, destination-management and museum electives if you cannot use the licence.

The most costly mistake is enrolling on the assumption that a Turkish guiding degree gives a foreign national the right to guide in Turkey. It does not.

Budget for field-trip costs if they are charged separately, museum passes, housing, insurance and the residence permit.

Turkish citizens who pass the licence procedure work as regional or national tourist guides in the languages they qualified in. For international graduates the realistic paths are tour operation and product planning at travel agencies, destination and heritage marketing, museum and visitor-centre roles, cruise and incentive-travel coordination, and guiding in their home country, where different rules apply.

Working in Turkey in any of these roles requires a work permit, applied for by the employer. Knowledge of Turkish history combined with fluent Turkish and your home language is what employers in inbound tourism value most.
