Comparative Literature in Turkey

Comparative Literature in Turkey is best known through Istanbul Bilgi University’s English-taught bachelor’s, a four-year degree that reads world literature across languages and periods alongside history, philosophy, art and critical theory. Bilgi founded the department in 1996 and describes it as the first of its kind in Turkey. For 2026–27 the international tuition is $12 000 a year.

• Language: English, with Bilgi’s English preparatory programme for students below the entry score.
• Length: four years, plus up to one preparatory year.
• Core idea: literature studied transnationally, not one national canon, with courses in text analysis and theory.
• Entry: school certificate with a 50% average or SAT/ACT/IB, and an accepted English certificate.

Bilgi builds the programme on a history-of-civilisation spine: literature is read alongside the social and intellectual events that produced it. Art and music appreciation courses are part of the department’s own offer, and text-analysis and critical-theory courses train the close reading that the later years rely on. Reading lists run from mythology and ancient texts through sonnets and drama to contemporary fiction.

The year cards describe the usual sequence; Bilgi’s course catalogue and ECTS package list the exact courses and credits.

Bilgi’s department is an affiliate of the Institute for World Literature, whose summer programme is hosted by a different member university each year; the department says one student and one faculty member can attend annually.

• School results. Bilgi asks for at least a 50% grade average on the national secondary certificate. The Russian attestat and the certificates of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Belarus and Ukraine are listed with that minimum.
• International exams. SAT 1000, ACT 18, IB 28 points or two A-levels at grade D can be used instead.
• English. TOEFL iBT 75 (Home Edition not accepted), PTE Academic 60, Cambridge FCE B or CPE C. For a literature degree, aim well above the minimum: seminars expect you to discuss dense texts and write long essays in English from the first term.
• Useful extras. A short writing sample or reading list in your motivation letter is not required, but it helps the university see your interest if it reviews scholarship candidates.
• After admission: the Ministry of National Education issues the diploma equivalence certificate, and the migration authority the student residence permit.

Turkish universities offer three neighbouring options, and the right one depends on what you want to read and do:

1. Comparative Literature reads across languages and traditions, with more theory and cultural history. Best for future researchers, editors and critics.
2. English Language and Literature centres on literature written in English, with linguistics and stronger language practice. Better if you plan to teach English or work mainly in English-language media.
3. Translation and Interpreting is a professional skills degree. Choose it if your goal is to work as a translator.

When comparing departments, check the reading languages required, whether a second foreign language is compulsory, the size of seminar groups, and exchange agreements for a semester abroad. Humanities programmes can be accredited in Turkey by bodies such as STAR or FEDEK, both registered with YÖKAK; ask whether the department holds or is preparing for accreditation.

Bilgi lists editing, translation, writing and copywriting as typical professions, with graduates working in arts and culture organisations, advertising and media, NGOs and think-tanks. Many continue to a master’s in literature, cultural studies, publishing or translation. None of these paths needs a licence in Turkey; strong writing samples and languages are what employers check.

If you want to teach literature in schools, note that a teaching certificate is a separate qualification, and permanent posts in Turkish state schools are civil-service positions for which Turkish citizenship is a legal condition.

Bilgi’s 2026–27 list shows $12 000 a year, VAT included, for Comparative Literature, the same as for its other English-taught undergraduate programmes. A preparatory English year, if you need it, extends your stay; ask the university how the preparatory year is charged for your intake. Add Istanbul housing, health insurance, the residence-permit card and books, which for a reading-heavy degree are a real line in the budget, even with library access.
