American culture and literature in Turkey: the short answer

American Culture and Literature is an English-taught, four-year humanities bachelor's that studies the United States through its novels, poetry and drama, its history and politics, and its film, music and media. At the private universities listed here, published fees for international students are $2,700 a year at Haliç and $8,500 a year at Bahçeşehir for 2026/27.

It is not an English-language course. You are expected to read long texts, write argued essays and discuss theory in English from the first semester, so a solid B2–C1 level is the realistic starting point, whether you prove it with a test score or through the university's preparatory programme.

What the programme covers

The degree moves chronologically and thematically. First-year courses introduce literary analysis, academic writing and a survey of American history. The second and third years cover American literature from the colonial period to the present, the novel and short story, poetry, drama, ethnic and immigrant literatures, American film and popular culture, and literary and cultural theory. The final year is built around seminars and a research essay or thesis on a topic you choose.

Many departments offer electives in translation, creative writing or media studies, and some encourage a semester abroad through Erasmus+ or bilateral agreements. Ask which exchange partners accept students from this department and whether credits transfer automatically.

Who this degree suits

Choose it if you…

  • You read widely in English and enjoy analysing texts, films and cultural debates.
  • You want strong writing and argument skills for media, publishing, teaching or graduate study.
  • You are interested in the United States as a society, not only its language.

Worth a pause if…

  • You mainly want to improve your English; a language course or translation programme is more direct.
  • You expect a vocational degree with a fixed job title at the end.

Entry requirements for international applicants

Private universities accept the secondary-school certificate and transcript, or an international exam, for this programme. Because teaching is entirely in English, the language requirement is the one to plan around.

  • English proof: accepted TOEFL iBT or IELTS scores, or the university's own proficiency exam. Without them, you start in the English preparatory year before the four-year degree.
  • School documents: certificate and transcript (Russian and CIS applicants apply with the 11-year certificate), sworn translations, and the Ministry of National Education equivalence at registration.
  • Useful extras: a short writing sample or reading list is rarely required but helps in scholarship interviews.
  • Master's route: graduates can apply to master's programmes in literature, cultural studies or translation, where universities usually ask for an English score, transcript and statement of purpose.

How to compare American culture and literature programmes

  • Balance of literature and culture: some departments are strongly literary; others give more space to history, politics and media.
  • Class size and seminars: small seminars mean more feedback on your writing.
  • Faculty research: check what the lecturers publish on, for example contemporary fiction, African American literature or film.
  • Exchange options: a semester in Europe or North America adds weight to the degree.
  • Recognition: confirm the university's institutional accreditation with YÖKAK.

Careers after the degree

Graduates work in publishing and editing, journalism and content writing, translation and localisation, cultural institutions, international education and study-abroad offices, corporate communication and tourism. Many continue to a master's in literature, cultural studies, translation or international relations.

If you want to teach English in state schools, check the rules of the country where you plan to teach: in many systems a literature degree needs an additional pedagogical certificate. In Türkiye, graduates of these departments can take a pedagogical formation certificate for teaching, subject to current regulations.
