Higher education in the USA at a glance

The USA is the world's largest destination for international students. American universities traditionally top the global rankings, and the flexible education system lets you change your major during your studies and combine disciplines from different fields.
A bachelor's takes 4 years: for the first two, students study a broad range of subjects and only then choose a major. Study is based on a credit system and continuous assessment.
Advantages of studying in the USA
- Universities in the world's top 100 across most fields.
- Flexibility: you can switch or combine majors.
- Strong links between universities, employers and practice.
- The chance to work after graduation under the OPT program.
- A huge, multicultural student community.
United States: first check how many months the budget covers

A university budget often covers fall and spring. This University of Central Florida example is for 2026/27, 28 credits and non-Florida status; it is not a price for all US universities.
| Scenario | Approximate USD |
|---|---|
| UCF: tuition and academic fees, Fall + Spring | $22,500 |
| UCF: published total cost of attendance, Fall + Spring | $43,800 |
The published total includes books, housing, food, transport and personal expenses. Adding a separate rent line would count housing twice.
The academic-year guide for this example is about $43,800. Check summer living, any travel not covered by the transport allowance, and insurance required for your status separately: this is not a full 12-month budget.
Graduate study, community college and preparation programmes use different fees and study loads. Match I-20 financial evidence to the selected university’s international-office calculation.
If your budget is limited
Compare the full degree cost at a regional university with a community-college transfer route. Before transferring, check which credits count and how many semesters remain.
What to prepare next
Prepare your subject, grades, English results and family budget. State whether a transfer between institutions is an option.
Rounded US-dollar amounts use the university’s published 2026 figures. Programme and housing terms determine the final payments. Count housing and other categories once. Check what the university calculation includes; add only missing expenses and StudyU fees separately. A deposit can require funds before studies start. Do not add proof of funds again to expenses those same funds cover.
The way in
Admission is based on your diploma, a TOEFL/IELTS certificate and often the SAT. A personal essay and extracurricular achievements matter. The process starts early because of deadlines.
We'll help with choosing a university, essays, exams, documents and the student visa.
The roadmap:
- Pick your track. Compare a university with a community-college transfer option. Obtain programme fees, an individual credit-transfer assessment and the remaining study duration before treating the route as cheaper.
- Exams. Check which English tests and delivery formats each university accepts and whether SAT or ACT is required. Test availability alone does not establish acceptance.
- Application. Essays, recommendations, translated transcript; early rounds close in autumn, regular ones in early winter.
- Finances. The I-20 form requires proof of funds for a year of tuition and living; university scholarships are applied for in parallel.
- F-1 visa. Check the consulate’s current application process, interview availability, fees and required financial evidence. The authority decides the visa.
- Insurance and the move. Check the institution’s required cover, approved waivers and the full period of residence. Add only costs not included in its budget.
Applying with an 11-year school qualification
Each institution assesses school qualifications, subjects, grades and language under its own rules. Confirm eligibility after 11 years of school and the required tests. For a transfer, the receiving university decides which credits count and how many semesters remain; admission and savings are not automatic. More: guide.
Master's degrees in the USA
Graduate programmes set their own academic, language and test requirements. Compare tuition by credit load and the full duration. Assistantships and scholarships are separately awarded and may carry work or academic conditions; keep unconfirmed funding out of the essential budget.
Check the complete funding plan
Use the same intake, study load and accommodation period when comparing offers. Confirm compulsory charges, payment dates and refund terms. Count housing and financial evidence once; add only expenses absent from the published calculation.

FAQ
Yes - that's a key feature. For the first two years students study a broad range of subjects and then choose a major; disciplines can be combined.
Often yes, alongside TOEFL/IELTS. Exact requirements depend on the university - we'll advise.
Eligible F-1 graduates may apply for OPT practical training related to their degree. It requires a DSO recommendation and USCIS authorisation; work can start only when the applicable conditions are met. Check STEM-extension eligibility separately.
The total varies by institution, residency category and credit load. Compare each institution’s cost of attendance, including housing, fees and the months covered. A lower tuition charge or community-college start does not establish a saving unless credits transfer and the remaining duration is clear.
Direct undergraduate applications may be possible, depending on the institution and school qualification. Check its requirements for your country, subjects, grades and accepted English tests. An 11-year school certificate is assessed under that institution’s rules; admission is not automatic.
Check the delivery formats and tests accepted by each institution. An at-home English test is useful only where the chosen programme accepts it. Confirm current test-centre availability and travel requirements before booking.
UCF’s non-Florida undergraduate guide is about $43,800 for Fall + Spring 2026/27 with 28 credits. Tuition and academic fees of about $22,500 are part of that total. Housing and food are included; check summer and missing expenses separately.
The receiving university assesses admission and transferable credits. Compare both institutions’ fees, living costs and the remaining semesters. A transfer route can be useful, but does not establish automatic entry to year three or a fixed saving.
